Maps of 1888 and 1893
show no dwellings or other structures located at what was to become 407
- 419 South Commercial Avenue. This location is currently two buildings.
The building in the center of the block being on Block 18, part of lot
3, lots 4, 5, 6 and 7, of the original townsite of Coleman, and has been
addressed at different times as 393, 407, 413 and 415 South Commercial
Avenue. The building on the south end of the block being on Block
18, lots 8, 9, and 10, of the original townsite of Coleman, and has been
addressed at different times as 394, 415, 417 and 419 South Commercial
Avenue.
An 1898 map shows a small two story dwelling located about where the
north side of 407 South Commercial Avenue is today. It is shown with
a street location of 392. This was the only building located on the
east side of the 400 block of South Commercial Avenue in 1898. |

These maps from 1904 and 1909 shows the entire east side
of the 400 block of South Commercial Avenue being occupied by a camp or
wagon yard. This was still the horse and buggy days, and when folks
came to town, they left their buggies or wagons and horses at a camp yard
or livery stable. The 1909 map identifies the business as the "D.
(or O.) F. Crowley Wagon Yard. Note the feed house on the northwest
corner and the two camp houses on the east part of the block. This
block became later know by a number of addresses, but today are primarily
401
South Commercial Avenue and 407 (and 415) South Commercial Avenue. |

side - 1916 map

By 1916, this map shows the same basic layout of the wagon yard.
A blacksmith shop had been added on the northeast corner, and buildings
had been built on the south end and, most notably, a building had been
added to the center portion of the block. This portion was to become
407 South Commercial Avenue, with the north becoming 401
and 403 South Commercial Avenue, and the south portion becoming 415
or 417 or 419 South Commercial Avenue at different times. |
south
side - 1923 map
|
By 1923 the wagon yard had been torn down, and buildings housing automobile
garages built on the central and southern portion of this block.
The yellow color of the central part (shown as 393) indicates this was
a wood frame building. The blue color of the southern part of this
block (shown as 415) indicates it was a stone building. |
"In 1929, the M. K.
Witt Motor Company was located at 407 - 417 South Commercial Avenue.
M. K. Witt was the owner and manager, and Marion Flynt was the assistant
manager. John Cole (colored) was a porter there." (Coleman
City Directory, 1929 - Hudspeth.)
Sometime between 1923 and 1930, the frame and stone
buildings were removed, and replaced with a brick building, as shown in
the following maps. Little changed from 1930 to 1948, except a drive
through filling station was added on the southwest corner of the business. |
