215 (217) East College Avenue

Legal Description:  Original Townsite of Coleman, Block 9, 67x215 of southeast quarter


 

The earliest maps of Block 9 show a small dwelling on the southeast corner.  This location would become 215 East College Avenue.


Before 1923 this location was addressed as 312 and 209 East College Avenue, but by 1923 it was addressed as 217 East College Avenue. 
By 1929 the address had been changed to 215 East College Avenue.

Apparently the small dwelling located at what would become
217 East College Avenue was torn down after 1904,
and the new large dwelling was built at this location.

The smaller dwelling on the northwest corner,
used a a servant's house and addressed as
217 1/2 East College Avenue,
was located behind the main house.

     This is the house that was probably built by W. R. McClellan for his daughter and son-in-law, Mildred and Walter Woodward.  (The original picture, printed on Post Card Photographic Paper, is in the Mac Woodward Collection at the Coleman Public Library.)  the rear of the post card says, "Walter and Mildred Woodward home as it was when Mama and Papa gave it to them.  Walter and "Jack" dog on porch."  (The original was cracked and broken, and was restored by Ralph Terry.)

"In 1929, Walter C. Woodward and his wife Mildred M., was located at 215 (also referred to as 217 in listings) East College Avenue. 

He was a partner in Critz and Woodward, attorneys, 401-4 Coleman Office building, phone 120.  His home phone was 357."

He was a the owner of R. T. Caperton Chevrolet Company."

The property at 215 East College Avenue was purchased by Flora Dee Daugherty before 1973, and was sold to Terry Langley in August 2007.
