It is not known when Independence school began, but it does not appear
in the school records until after 1915, when Howe School disappears from
the records, appearing that Independence replaced Howe
School, both were known as District #12. Independence School
was located about a mile west of the older Howe School and about 3 miles
south of Burkett. It consolidated with Burkett
in 1934.
