The Herring school was located in Runnels County, but part of its district
was located in Coleman County. It could have originated from the
old Mud Creek School mentioned in the 1877 Coleman County records, as Runnels
County was under Coleman County jurisdiction at that time. The earliest
records found in Coleman County concerning Herring were in 1919, when the
boundaries were re-established. This district was called C&R2
(Coleman and Runnels 2). In 1924, the supervision of Herring was
transferred to Runnels County. In 1933, it consolidated with Talpa.
With this consolidation, several years of controversy and law suits evolved
between the Talpa School District, the Runnels County School Board, and
the Crews School District (of Runnels County). The old Herring School
District did remain in the Talpa School District,
even though much of this district was located in Runnels County.
