History of Coleman County and Its People, 1985
Glen Cove had one of the earliest schools in the county, being listed in the County Commissioner’s Court Minutes of 1877. The teacher that year was Miss Annie J. Everett. In 1887, it was identified as School Community #4 in District #6, and in 1911 became District #6. The school had a two story building and as many as 125 pupils at one time. The primary teacher taught downstairs, and had about 90 pupils. After the students were promoted to the Principal’s Room, which was upstairs, they took up grammar and geography. Each child had to know each state, lake, and states by groups. They had debates, spelling matches, and Literary Societies, which were public affairs, and the weight of those huge crowds made the floor of the old school house groan. In the 1913 - 1914 school year, the trustees were S. H. Thurman, E. C. Jones and R. D. Lowe, teachers were Mrs. B. W.Eaton ($50 a month), Miss Bowers May ($62.50 a month) and Miss Nettie Sparks ($40 a month). In 1914 - 1915 the school term trustees were S. H. Thurman, E. C. Jones and M. N. Whittington, with teachers C. A. Rylee ($90 a month), Miss Edna Gilmore ($50 a month), Miss Ruby Forman (50 a month) and Winnie Lowrie of Talpa ($40 a month). The enrollment was 107. R. D. Lowe furnished the wood, paid $90 for the school term. In 1950, Glen Cove was classed as a dormant school and was consolidated
with Talpa.
