Cheryl Lorraine Cummings Norris, age 59 of Novice, passed away January 2, 2005 at the Abilene Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. in Walker Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Dean Coultas, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Coleman, officiating. Interment will follow in the Midway Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening (today) from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. until time for the services at 10:00 a.m. Cheryl was born November 14, 1945 in Crews, the daughter of the late James Howard and Thelma Rose Greer Cummings. A lifetime resident of Coleman County, Cheryl was retired from Dry¹s Manufacturing, a member of the South Side Baptist Church in Granbury, a member of the Eastern Star, and attended Novice Metho-dist Church. She is survived by one son; Jason Norris of Novice; three daughters; Lisa Collins of Brandon, Mississippi, Brenda and husband Larry Williams of Abilene, and Michele and husband Randall Sims of Lafayette, Louisiana; four sisters, Jean Mason of Coleman, Fern Kincaid of Novice, Patsy Keel of Joshua, Texas and Joyce Keel of Keithville, Louisiana; one sister-in-law, Donna Cummings of Coleman. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; one grandson-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Cheryl was preceded in death by two sisters; Marion Williams and Neda Kincaid; one brother, Melton Cummings; and a son-in-law, Stanley Collins. Freddie Vance Gilliam, age 67, of Rockwall, died Sunday, January 2, 2005 at his residence. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 8, 2005 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Mr. Gilliam was born February 5, 1937 in Coleman, the son of Paul Gilliam and Mary Knight Gilliam Sowell. He graduated from Coleman High School and was a retired Dallas businessman. Survivors include one aunt, Lillian Vale Holland of Petrolia, Texas; one great-aunt, Era V. Funeral services for George Mack Cathey, 72, of Brownwood were held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with Ted Kell officiating. Interment followed at 4 p.m. at McAdoo Cemetery in McAdoo, Texas. He died Sunday, January 2, 2005 at his home. Mr. Cathey was born May 30, 1932 in Coleman, the son of the late Jesse and Dora Slaughter Cathey. He graduated from Early High School. On January 8, 1954, he married Lila Jones in Clovis, New Mexico. He retired from the United States Navy as a chief ward officer, where he traveled completely around the world in his Navy career. He was an entrepreneur and owner and operator of Cathey Enterprises for nearly 30 years. George was a member of Austin Avenue Church of Christ and had lived in Brownwood the past 19 years. Survivors include his wife, Lila Cathey of Brownwood; three children, Susan Gail Dixon and husband, Dusty, of Austin, Laurie Ann Cathey Perkins and husband, Randy, of Brownwood and David Eric Cathey and wife, Lauren Skoch, of Oklahoma City; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services for William "Bill" Pearce of Denison, 69-year old retired senior systems analyst, were held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 6, 2005 at the Church of Christ in Whitewright, with Mr. Frazier Conley officiating. Burial followed at Celeste Cemetery in Celeste, Texas. Mr. Pearce passed away Sunday, January 2, 2005 in Denison. Mr. Pearce was born on February 19, 1935 in Coleman, Texas, the son of Gordon Pearce and Joan Staggs Pearce. He married Cleatis Greenwood on April 27, 1957. He was a retired Senior Systems Analyst with IBM and was a member of the Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife, Cleatis Pearce of Denison; son, Tim Pearce of Mesa, Arizona; brothers, Ronnie Pearce of Fairfield and Jerry Pearce of Victoria; sisters, Ann Holt of Fredericksburg, Virginia and Bettye Barnes of Burleson; and grandchildren, Jackson Pearce of Albany, New York, Bradley Pearce of Mesa, Arizona and Jennifer Crites of Whitewright. Lloyd Ainsworth, age 84 of Coleman, died Monday, January 3, 2005 at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 7, 2005 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the White Chapel Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Family visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. today (Thursday) at the funeral home. Mr. Ainsworth was born February 17, 1920 in Wharton County, Texas, a son of Alexander Ainsworth and Cassie Lujennie Lemley Ainsworth. He grew up in Bay City and attended school in Old Gulf, Texas. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He married Wanda Brewer on January 28, 1970 in Brownwood. She preceded him death on July 29, 1992. He worked for Marathon Oil Company in Iraan as a pumper for 33 years before moving to Coleman in 1978. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #1267 in Iraan, Phoenix Club in Abilene and a Baptist. Survivors include two daughters, Sheila Isom Grace of Brownwood, Susan Gustafson of Tucson, Arizona; one sister, Willa Earl of West Columbia, Texas; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one nephew, three nieces and numerous great nieces and great nephews. Myrtle Parsons, age 100, of Brady, formerly of Brownwood, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2005. Graveside service was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Cleveland Cemetery, Coleman County. Davis-Morris Funeral Home in Brownwood was in charge of arrangements. Born January 3, 1905 in Elida, New Mexico, she was a longtime resident of Brown County before moving to Brady. She was a Baptist and a homemaker. Survivors include her children: Barbara Martin and husband Buddy of San Angelo; Wanda Guthrie and husband Skip of Owens; and Elsie Goodgion and husband, J. L. (Jay) of Brady; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; numerous step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren and step great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Teague. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nevy Parsons; three sisters; two brothers and a granddaughter, Amanda Rose. G. W. Wilson, age 96, long-time Coleman banker, died Thursday, January 6, 2005 at Abilene Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his family. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 8, 2005 at the Elm Street Church of Christ in Coleman with Joe Hailey officiating and eulogy given by Jodie Anderson, his grandson. Burial will follow in the Glen Cove Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. G. W. Wilson was born November 24, 1908 in Silver Valley, Coleman County, Texas, a son of Benjamin Mattison and Hettie Elizabeth Jones Wilson. He grew up in Coleman County and graduated from Coleman High School in 1927. On July 18, 1934 he married Marjorie Griffith in Coleman. G. W. was a life-long resident of Coleman and served as the president of the Coleman County State Bank for many years. He was active in numerous banking organizations, Kiwanis, Jaycees, Coleman County Development Corporation and the Coleman Rodeo Association. He was a faithful member of the Elm Street Church of Christ where he served as deacon, elder, and Sunday School teacher. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Wilson of Coleman; two daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Monroe Bethke and Joyce and Mac Anderson all of Coleman; one sister, Oleta Thate of Coleman; five grandchildren: Marla and husband Jeff Frye of Flower Mound and their children, Jennifer (husband Jerrid) Brann, Stephanie and Andrew; John and wife Enedelia Straughan of San Antonio and their children Ariana and Celeste; Lisa Birdwell and son David of Monahans; Jodie and wife Sandra Anderson of McKinney and their children Callie, Tanner and Will; Alan and Cassie Anderson of Midland and their children MacKenzie and Maycie; two nephews, Ben and wife Debbie Scott of Coleman, David and wife Amy Scott of Christoval; two nieces, Jodie and husband Jack Baggett of Ozona and Kay Lynn and husband Steve Evans of Coleman; numerous great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Mrs. Schmidt passed away Thursday, January 6, 2005 in Keene. She was born April 27, 1923 in Coleman, Texas, to David and Addie Corder Riley. Mrs. Schmidt was a homemaker and was of the Church of Christ faith. Winters man died in a one-vehicle rollover Saturday night in Coleman County. According to Department of Publice Safety in Brownwood, Anthony Catalano, 50, was driving a 1995 Ford F250 pickup truck west on Farm Road 1770 about four miles west of Novice about 9:15 p.m. He drove off the roadway into a ditch, overcorrected back onto the roadway and drove across the eastbound and westbound lanes before crashing through a fence and into a field, the DPS reported. Catalano, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the pickup and declared dead at the scene. Catalano's body was taken to Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman. (Coleman

Anthony "Tony" Catalano, 60 Anthony "Tony" Catalano of Crews, died Saturday, January 8, 2005 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Tony was born December 13, 1944 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the son of Salvatore Catalano and Marie Anne Irene Clement Catalano. He graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1962. He was a carpenter by trade and bred and trained registered Quarter-horses and Paint Breeds. Survivors include one son, James A. Catalano of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, three daughters, Roberta M. Catalano of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Jennifer J. Catalano of New Lebanon, New York, Marie E. Catalano of Lakeland, Florida; three brothers, Joseph A. Catalano of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, David Catalano of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Arthur Catalano of Richmond, Virginia; five sisters, Lucille A. Kane of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Christine M. Kellogg of Richmond, Virginia, Marie A. Ruel of Richmond, Virginia, Sally J. Cooper of Chesire, Massachusetts, Sandra L. Cassavant of Richmond, Virginia and five grandchildren. Mrs. Eleanor L. Taylor, 92 years of age, passed away at her daughter¹s home in Lake Brownwood Sunday, January 9, 2005. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 13, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home with interment to follow in the Voss Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman. Family visitation will be at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. to service time on Thursday. Eleanor was born March 11, 1912 in Brooklyn, New York. She was married to the late Don Taylor on October 15, 1942 in Cisco, Texas and at that time they moved to Coleman County, and later to Coleman. She was secretary of an insurance agency and secretary at the Lyle White Electric in Coleman for many years and retired from there. Her husband Don preceded her in death February 29, 2004. Mrs. Taylor was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Sue and Cal Oates of Lake Brownwood; son and daughter-in-law, Radford and Suzy Taylor of De Soto; sister, Lucille Haskell of Florida; six grandchildren, Gina Taylor of De Soto, Vincent Taylor of El Paso, Lynne Taylor Oates-Hancock and husband Will Hancock of Lake Brownwood, Thomas Walker Oates, Timothy Walker Oates and Kevin Lee Oates all of Irving; and six great-grandchildren. Albert Garland Daylong, age 79, died Sunday, January 9, 2005 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Graveside funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Coleman Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Family visitation will be today (Tuesday) from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Daylong was born April 5, 1926 in San Angelo, Texas. After retiring from Chrysler Service, he began a new career with Wal-Mart. As a World War II veteran, he became a spokesman for the WWII Memorial and appeared in many Wal-Mart commercials. His kindness and wit will be truly missed. Survivors include his wife, Lola Ray Daylong; three sons, James Michael Daylong, Patrick Lynn Daylong and Timothy Curtis Daylong; one daughter, Mary Beth Daylong; one sister Georgia Green; grandchildren, Haley Daylong, Sean Daylong, James Daylong, Dean Daylong, Andrew Daylong and Robin Daylong; and one great-granddaughter, Raynee Ember Dunnick. (By Billie Mercer) According to a brief news release from the Coleman County Sheriff Department, Sheriff Wade Turner advised that a call came into the local police department from Santa Anna resident John Dockery at 12:31 p.m. Monday January 10, 2005 that there had been a plane crash on his place approximately six to eight miles east of the City of Coleman. Upon investigation by the County Sheriff’s Department it was found that a Cessna 150 which is a small single engine plane had gone down in a brushy area. The plane was being flown by long time resident of Coleman Gabriel D. Rosales, 67 who resided at 1102 South Colorado. Rosales was killed as a result of the crash. Rosales was flying alone. Sheriff Turner advised that the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been contacted, and will be the ones actively investigating the cause and manner of the crash. According to Sheriff Turner the County Sheriff’s office was on the scene as soon as possible, but these others will make the final investigation. Gabriel Diaz Rosales, age 67 of Coleman, died Monday, January 10, 2005. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 14, 2005 at Fellowship Baptist Church with Rev. Marty Reed officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. A prayer service will be 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2005 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel. Gabriel was born July 22, 1937 in Coleman and was the son of Felipe Rosales and Manuela Diaz Rosales. He grew up and attended school in Coleman. He served in the National Guard for many years and married Edelmira H. (Betty) Rodriguez on June 8, 1963 in Ballinger. She preceded him in death on September 1, 1984. Gabriel work as an auto body repairman in Coleman, was a member of the Gideons, involved in the jail ministry in Coleman and served as a Deacon at Fellowship Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Rita and James Herrera of Abilene, Dora and Mickey Salas of Coleman, Solina and Martin Martinez of Abilene; six brothers, Robert Rosales, Octaviano (Otto) Rosales, Phillip Rosales and Salatiel Rosales all of Coleman, Ezekiel Rosales and Eduardo Rosales both of Abilene; five sisters, Lydia Sanchez of Coleman, Amelia Aguirre and Juanita Castanon both of Abilene, Anita Escobar and Nena Rosales both of San Antonio; nine grandchildren, Jordan Salas, Desiree Salas, KaSondra Suarez, Jorge Suarez, Jr., Edelmara Kadra Cruz, Martin Martinez, II, G. Ruth Gober (Honey) Eason, age 69, of Ingram, formerly of Brownwood, passed away Monday, January 10, 2005 in Kerrville, Texas. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 14, at the Bangs Cemetery with Pastor Heath Way officiating. Interment will follow, under the direction of Davis - Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood. Family visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. this evening (Thursday) at the funeral home. Born February 28, 1935 in Brown County, Texas she had been a resident of Ingram for the last 18 years. She was a caregiver. Roger E. Matthews Sr., age 86, of Jefferson, Oregon died Monday, January 10, 2005 at his home. He was born in Knox City, Texas, the son of Ethel Rose (Jackson) and Roger William Matthews. "Gene" to his family, was the oldest of 10 children. One of his greatest achievements was his graduation from the Civilian Conservation Corps in Stafford, Arizona where he met his wife, Betty Jean Reed. They were married Christmas Day 1940. He joined the Army in 1943 and received a Sharp Shooter medal in basic training. He served in the Pacific Theater, where he earned a Purple Heart. Roger was employed by Phelps-Dodge Copper Mining Company in Mosenci, Arizona and Peru, South America before moving to Oregon in the sixties. He worked in construction and the lumber industry before retiring from the Sweet Home School District as bus driver and warehouse supervisor. He was a past master of the Masonic Sweet Home Lodge No. 202 and was a member of Jefferson Lodge No. 33. Roger was a Life member of Knights Templar of Oregon. He was a Royal Arch Mason Life Member of Baycey Chapter No. 8 and a Select Master Life Member of Adoniram Council No. 9. He was also a life member of DAV and the Commander¹s Club. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty; two daughters, Verna and husband Art Cobb and Juanita and husband David Herbst; and one son, Roger E. Jr., all of Jefferson, Oregon; seven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Other survivors include one brother, Truman Matthews of Burkett; four sisters, Jeanette Brock and Evelyn Dillingham of Santa Anna, Shirley Leach of Azle and Billie Woods of Granbury. Uno Earl Lundvall, age 93 of Coleman, died Wednesday, January 12, 2005 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2005 at the Coleman City Cemetery, with Arthur Tanner officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Mr. Lundvall was born August 10, 1911 in Magalia, California, the son of Oscar Albin Lundvall and Rebecca Frances Empee Lundvall. He grew up in Nebraska, Southerland and North Platte were he graduated from high school. and attended Business College. He married Thelma Thompson on September 29, 1994 in Coleman. He moved to Coleman in 1982 and was a building contractor and farmer and an Elder with Kingdom Hall of Jehovah¹s Witnesses in Coleman. Survivors include his wife, Thelma Lundvall of Coleman; one son, Byron Lundvall and wife Esther of Houston; five grandsons; two granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; two step-sons, Ricky Thompson of Freeport, Texas, Kenneth Neff of Coleman; and six step-grandchildren. Alta Agatha Haynes, 71, of Wichita Falls, formerly of Coleman County and Amarillo, Texas, died Wednesday, January 12, 2005, in Wichita Falls. Services were 2 p.m. Saturday, January 15, 2005 at Dutton Funeral Home Chapel, with Mr. Bill Floyd, North 4th Church of Christ, Wichita Falls, officiating. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery, Iowa Park, under the direction of Dutton Funeral Home. Mrs. Haynes was born on August 15, 1933, in Santa Anna, Texas. She married Raymond Haynes on Aug. 15, 1948, in Coleman, Texas. She had resided in Wichita Falls for 45 years, and was a member of the North 4th Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her father, Clarence Durham. Mrs. Mary L. Johnson, 84 years of age, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Martin and Katie Farmer Wright born August 2, 1920 in Gouldbusk, Texas and passed away in the Home Hospice house in Odessa, Texas January 13, 2005 at 10:35 p.m. Services were Monday at 2 p.m. in the Walker Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Joe Hailey officiating minister of the Elm Street Church of Christ with interment following in the Burkett Cemetery. Mary had lived in Coleman most of her life and the past year with her daughter and son-in-law in Midland. She married the late Mr. O. B. Johnson August 3, 1940 in Coleman, Texas. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Bob Lester of Midland, Texas; granddaughter, Andrea Leigh Allison of Midland, Texas; great-grandsons, William Dalton Allison, Jackson Wesley Allison, and Steffan Nicolas Jordan all of Midland, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Omie Slate of Santa Anna, Texas and Mrs. Christine Dempsey of Coleman, Texas; one brother, L. K. Wright of Santa Anna, Texas. She is preceded in death by her husband, O. B.; infant son, Myron D.; granddaughter Angela Dawn Lester; two brothers William and Jesse Wright. She was a member of the Elm Street Church of Christ in Coleman Texas and the Golf Course Road Church of Christ of Christ in Midland. During the 1960's, she worked at Bowen Drugstore, Owl Drugstore, Brink's Pharmacy, and the Coleman Independent Theaters in Coleman. Mary was a kind and loving Christian woman loved by family and friends. She loved the Lord with all her heart and soul and was a faithful servant to Him. Her family takes great comfort in knowing that she's now resting in His presence. She was a gentle spirit who always showed others kindness and compassion from the heart. Her home was always welcoming and warm. No one set a table more inviting. Mary made the best iced tea in Texas, her home grown meals of black-eyed peas, tomatoes, onions, were fit for a Kings banquet. She was also well known in Coleman for her cake decorating talents. Whenever anyone would ask her, "How are you feeling Mary?" She always said "I'm alright," even in her final days when pain ravaged her body, she still answered "I'm alright." Mary loved her children and moved to Midland to be closer to all of them. She will always be "Mamma" to all of us. Now, "Mamma" is present with her husband, O. B. known to family as "Pappa," her granddaughter "Angie," other family members that made the journey before her, as well as other Christians that greeted her at Heaven's gate. Johnny Alvin Fleming, age 84, of Santa Anna, Texas passed away on Friday, January 14, 2005 at 1:30 a.m. at the Bangs Nursing Home Graveside services were Monday, January 17, 2005 at the Cleveland Cemetery directed by Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna. Johnny was born October 7, 1920 in Coleman County to the late John Franklin and Verdie Lee Curry Fleming. He was reared in Coleman County attending the Cleveland Schools. Johnny was a member of the Church of Christ and an oilfield worker and stockfarmer. Oleta Gray Harrell, 88 years of age, passed away January 15, 2005 at Spring Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lampasas, Texas. Services for Mrs. Harrell are 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 20, 2005 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel in Coleman, with Rev. John Stanislaw, minister of the First Baptist Church of Coleman, officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. She was born June 11, 1916 in Gouldbusk, Coleman County, Texas to Jim Gray and Amanda May Allison-Gray. She married Raymond Harrell, September 14, 1933 in Coleman where they lived until January, 1993, when they moved to Fort Stockton, Texas to be near their daughters, Elaine Johnson and Faye Pounds. Mrs. Harrell was a member of the Esther Sunday School Class and the First Baptist Church of Coleman. S he has been a resident of Lampasas since 1998. Mrs. Mary Josephine Jackson, age 84, died January 16, 2005 in the Coleman County Medical Center. Interment followed under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman. Mrs. Jackson was born November 5, 1920 in Noel, Missouri, the daughter of the late Isam and Alma Hargrove Brooks. She had lived in Coleman since 2000 and was a nurse and a member of the Pentecostal Church. Lottie Faye Lee, 75, formerly of Abilene, died Sunday, January 16, 2005 at her residence in Midland. A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Midway Cemetery in Hodges, with Wayne Goforth officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home of Abilene. A daughter of the late Thelma and Harvey Williams, Lottie Faye was born on April 30, 1929, in San Saba, Texas. She attended schools in Winters and Comanche and became a registered nurse after completing her training at Hendrick Medical School of Nursing in 1950. Mrs. Lee was employed at Hendrick Medical Center and St. Ann¹s Hospital in Abilene, and later worked at Lubbock Hospital and as a private duty nurse in Lubbock. In 1958, she moved from Lubbock to Midland. She married Albert E. Lee, Jr. in Abilene on March 17, 1951. Mrs. Lee was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include her daughters, Brenda Olive and Lydia Acuff, both of Lubbock and Robbie Vail of Coleman; a son, Roger Lee of Lubbock; a bother, Wayne Williams of Bangs; and seven grandchildren. Joseph Richard Bowman, age 76, of Coleman, died Monday, January 17, 2005 at Coleman County Medical Center. Services will be held at a later date in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. The body was cremated. Stevens Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He was born December 16, 1928 in Indianapolis, Indiana, a son of the late William and Mary Lambert Bowman. He grew up in Indianapolis and attended school at Ben Davis. Joseph served in the U. S. Army as a medic in Korea. On October 1, 1950 he married Joyce Marsh in Rossville, Georgia and she preceded him in death on March 22, 1997. Joseph was a machinist in the heating and cooling industry. He lived in Indianapolis until moving to Coleman in 1993. He was Seventh Day Adventist. Survivors include six sons, James D. and wife Obra Samons, Joseph R. Bowman and wife Darla, Harry H. Bowman and wife Diane, Michael B. Bowman all of Indianapolis, Indiana; Richard C. Bowman and wife Cathy of Santa Anna, Texas and Marshall D. Mrs. Lorene Benton Shelburn, age 96 of Texarkana, Texas died at Heritage Plaza Nursing Center in Texarkana on January 18, 2005. The funeral service for Mrs. Shelburn will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 21, 2005 at the Lake Victor Church of Christ in Lake Victor, Texas. Britt Farmer will officiate the service and burial will follow at Warner Cemetery in Burnet County, Texas under the direction of Briggs-Gamel-Wilcox Funeral Home of Lampasas, Texas. Family visitation will be at the funeral home in Lampasas today (Thursday) from 6 - 8 p.m. Mrs. Shelburn was born October 18, 1908 in Burnet County, Texas. She married Ray Shelburn in Burnet County and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Rosehill Church of Christ in Texarkana and a member of the Home Demonstration Club. She had lived in Texarkana for two and a half years; prior to that she had lived in Greenville, Texas for four years, moving there from Coleman, Texas. She is survived by one son and wife, Wendell and Shirley Shelburn of Greenville; two daughters and their husbands, Alice and John Cooper of Houston and Gaylia and Calvin Coley of Texarkana; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was born July 24, 1936, in Trickham, Texas, the daughter of the late Ollie and Charlie Wells. She had been a resident of Brown County for a number of years and was formerly of Coleman County. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and worked as a foreman at Kohler Company for a number of years. On February 6, 1953, she was married to Jack Gilbreath in Coleman. He preceded her in death in 1991. Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ruth Long; and a grandson, Brian Thomas. Bruce Hess officiating. Interment followed at the Santa Anna Cemetery under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna. Ruth was born October 2, 1935 in Coleman County to the late Ottis L. and Floy M. Dillard Havner. She was reared in Coleman County graduating from Coleman High School. On January 25, 1953 Ruth married Walter Douglas "Dub" Aldridge in Coleman and they had celebrated fifty-two years of marriage. They lived in Kermit from 1953 until 1967 moving back to Santa Anna where she had since resided. Ruth was a member of the First Baptist Church and Dorcas Sunday School Class. She had owned and operated the Sewing Basket in Santa Anna and was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, W. D. "Dub" Aldridge of Santa Anna, Texas; two daughters, Deborah and husband Randy Long of Shields, Texas and Belinda and husband Timothy Ince of Roscoe, Texas; a son, Duane and wife Kassandra Aldridge of Brownwood, Texas; four sisters, twin - Ruby and husband Charles Hosch of Santa Anna, Texas, Gerrye Hill of Brownwood, Texas, Nelda and husband Bob Davis of Santa Anna, Texas, and Freda and husband Dale Purcell of Bangs, Texas; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Richard "Dick" Powell, age 79, of Coleman died Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at his residence. A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 29, 2005 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel. The body was cremated. Services were under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Dick Powell was born April 19, 1925 in Moran, Texas, a son of Harold Charles Powell and Vivian Pearl Smith Powell. He grew up in Coleman and attended school at Coleman High School, Class of 1943. Dick served in the U. S. Army during World War II in Germany and also in Occupied Germany. On January 12, 1947 he married Virginia Stockard in Brownwood, Texas. Dick lived in Abilene from 1959-1991 where he was a letter carrier. He moved to Coleman in 1991 and was a member of National Association of Letter Carriers. Dick ran in several marathons including the New York City Marathon. He and Virginia back-packed across Europe and made friends in many places. Since returning to Coleman, he had been a member of the Triple L Club and delivered Meals on Wheels. He was a member of Unity Church of Christianity in Abilene. Carolyn Gail (Gram) Hagler, age 67, died Wednesday, January 26, 2005 in Amarillo, Texas. Services were 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Dumas, Texas under the direction of Morrison Funeral Directors. The officiant was Rev. Beth Harrington, pastor of First United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Northlawn Memorial Gardens in Dumas. Carolyn was born July 14, 1937 in San Angelo, Texas to John and Louise Monroe. She had been a Dumas resident since 1964. Carolyn married Jerry Alvin "Pops" Hagler on February 10, 1956 in Coleman, Texas. He preceded her in death on April 10, 2001. She babysat for years and worked in the nursery at First United Methodist Church. She was secretary for the City of Dumas for several years and also worked for Continental Telephone Company. In October of 1952, she received one of the country¹s highest medals for human valor, The Carnegie Hero Medal Award for the kind of bravery for which the recipient risked his or her life. She loved to garden, cook and most of all, be with her children and grandchildren. She touched many lives and will be greatly missed. She¹s our hero in heaven now. Interment will be in the Talpa Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Dixie was born September 11, 1920 in Talpa, Texas, a son of the late Haden Anderson Mercer and Bonnie Beatrice Huey Mercer. He grew up in Talpa, played football at Talpa High School and graduated in 1938. On January 11, 1941 he married Ollie Faye Sheppard in Midland, Texas and she preceded him in death on January 11, 1990. During World War II, Dixie served in the United States Army Air Corp as an air traffic controller in the European Theater of Operations. He lived in Seminole, Texas for many years where he worked for Mobil Oil Company as a pipeliner and inspector. He moved to Coleman in 1981, married Beth Boyd in 1992, and attended the First United Methodist Church. Due to health reasons, he and Beth moved to Nacogdoches in 2002. Survivors include his wife, Beth Boyd Mercer of Nacogdoches, Texas; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Melvin Ray Mercer and Sharry Billene Mercer of College Station, Texas; one daughter, Dr. Dixie Faye Mercer of Nacogdoches, Texas; one brother and sister-in-law, David and Billie Mercer of Coleman, Texas; two grandchildren, Rebecca Raylene (Becky) Lewis and husband Kyle A. Lewis of College Station, Texas, Elizabeth Anne (Lisa) Mercer of Austin, Texas; one great-grandson, William Kyler Lewis; two nephews, Haden Mack Mercer of Port St. Lucie, Florida and Tim Mercer of Vancourt, Texas. He was preceded in death by a brother, Herman Anderson Mercer, and a sister-in-law, Nan Mercer. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer¹s Association or the Salvation Army. Frenchtown, Montana - With the recent passing of Sarah Elizabeth Ann Collins, 79, on January 29, 2005, she joins her husband Frank William Collins, who preceded her in death on November 9 1999. With all of her family present, Frank’s Annie was laid to rest next to him on January 30, 2005 She was born on March 7, 1925, in Philly (Lamar County), Texas, close to Paris, Texas. She was the daughter of Murphy “Bart” Russell and Maggie Crowford - Thompson of South Carolina by way of Arkansas. She met Frank who was a Staff Sergeant serving in the Army Air Force in Amarillo, during the war. They married on Valentines Day February 14, 1945 in Amarillo, Texas. Elizabeth graduated Salutatorian of her high school graduating class. After she went on to become a cosmetologist. A woman of many talents she sang on stage in the Opera House in Clarendon, Texas, where she also yodeled. Elizabeth and Frank also enjoyed dancing together at the USO. Some of her favorites were roses, sunsets, learning of the different constellations, collecting coins and stamps. She was a devoted lady of family and her Creator. Frank was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on September 13, 1914, and raised in South Dakota. Starting in 1939 he worked summers in Yellowstone Park and winters in Sun Valley, Idaho. In 1942 he was inducted in the Air Force Technical Training Command. He became a instructor for B17 mechanics. When the B29 bomber entered service Frank also became an instructor for flight engineers. Immediately after WWII Frank and Elizabeth made their home in South Dakota where he became a teacher and she the cook in a one room school house at the Four Bear Indian Day School located on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. Frank continued his education in Aberdeen, South Dakota, eventually receiving his degree from Montana State College. He later received his Master’s degree from the University of Montana. They moved to Frenchtown, Montana in the fall of 1953, where he taught high school until the age of 73 when he retired. Like most teachers’ families they worked in the summer at other jobs, Frank started working in 1939 driving a tour bus for Yellowstone Park Company and in the winter working at Sun Valley, Idaho. After the war they returned back during the summers months to work for the Yellowstone Park Company at the Gallatin Gate Way Inn in Montana; Cody, Wyoming and West Yellowstone Montain. Both worked summers as transportation agents in Yellowstone starting in 1949. Their last year in the park was 1979. They leave behind their children Louise Ann (Collins) Markley - Shourds and her husband Roger Lee Shourds of Polson Mt. (Turtle Lake); Frankie Collins - Lubin and husband Chris of Seattle; son-in-law Chester Rhoads Markley, Jr. of Lostine, Oregon; grandchildren Frank Nicholas Markley of Lake Oswego, Oregon; and Gretchen Louise Ann Markley of McMinnville, Oregon; great grandchildren Audrey and Alexander; grandson Roger Aotsugu Shourds of Missoula, Montana; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Father Drew Maddock of St. Ignatius Mission Church conducted graveside services and was assisted by the Salish Indian Choir; Octave Finley of Pablo; Stanley Healy Smallsalmon of Ronan and Gordan Fyant of Polson. Father Drew Maddock and the Salish Indian Choir also conducted a rosary with songs and prayers at the Lily of the Valley Adult Foster Home in Pablo Mt. where Elizabeth was last living. Chloti B. Armstrong, age 90, of Dallas, formerly of Santa Anna, passed away January 30, 2005 in Dallas, Texas. Services for Mrs. Armstrong were 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2nd, at the First United Methodist Church in Santa Anna. Interment followed in the Santa Anna Cemetery, under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood. Chloe was born October 10, 1914 in Coleman County, Texas to Ulmer Stanley and Beulah Thames Brannan. She attended school in Santa Anna and graduated from Buffalo High School. She also attended Sul Ross College. She married Charles Noel Armstrong on December 8, 1935 in Santa Anna. He preceded her in death on August 1, 1992. She was a homemaker, mother, and grandmother, living on the family farm in Santa Anna until they moved to Dallas. She is survived by her children, Yvonne and Lloyd Halmon of Santa Anna, Kenneth and Patsy Armstrong of Early and Janice Armstrong of Dallas; her grandchildren, Danny and Brenda Stovall of Early, Debbie Tidwell and Jason Jackson of De Ridder, Louisiana, Donna Horton of Brownwood, Russell Halmon of Austin, Cheree and Mike Martin of Santa Anna, Corey Halmon of Santa Anna; her great-grandchildren, Justin Tidwell and Beth of Brazoria, Jerrad Tidwell of Sweeney, Jordan Tidwell of De Ridder, Louisiana, Cody Jackson of De Ridder, Louisiana, Denise Armstrong of Early, Steven Armstrong of Early, Tarren Couch of Brownwood, Reagan Couch of Brownwood, Mikka Horton of Brownwood, Makayla Morris of Santa Anna, Peyton Morris of Santa Anna, Dalton Martin of Santa Anna; and her great- great- grandchild, Brayden Armstrong of Early. She is also survived by a sister, Faye Alexander and Jack of Yantis, Texas; a brother, Porter Brannan and Edie of Bedford, Texas; two nieces and one nephew. Mrs. Armstrong was preceded in death by her husband, parents and sister and brother-in-law, Christine and John Evans.
