School Resumes Today in Novice By Sidney Levesque / Abilene
Reporter-News, Abilene, Texas
School resumes today in the Novice school district after being closed Monday so students and staff could attend the funeral of a student. Venito ''Vinnie'' Cervantes, 14, died Friday (September 24, 2004) in nearby Coleman. His death is under investigation, but officials believe it was probably a suicide by hanging or strangulation, said Cpl. Michelle Sheedy with the Coleman Police Department. Police are awaiting autopsy results from the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office. ''It's going to be very hard for me to walk into my first-period class and see that empty chair,'' said science teacher Lynn Martin. He said Cervantes, an eighth-grader, seemed to be liked by peers and was a member of the junior high football team. Martin said Cervantes' funeral Monday was overflowing with friends, family and school officials. ''To me, he was always a very happy, outgoing student,'' Martin said. He said Cervantes transferred to Novice this school year from Coleman ISD. Several Coleman students attend Novice, Martin said. The school, located about 35 miles southeast of Abilene, has 96 students enrolled this fall. |
