Weatherford Man Killed Here In Pickup - Van Accident
by Billie Mercer

According to a news release from Sgt. Les Cogdill with the Coleman City Police Department an accident within the city limits on Thursday July 1, 2004 at approximately 5 p. m. resulted in the death of one and only minor injuries to others.  The accident occurred when a 1998 White Chevrolet S-10 pickup driven by 17 year old Oscar Padilla was heading east on East 4th Street with two passengers, Stephanie Salazar, 20, and George Calvillo, 17.  All were from Weatherford, Texas.  At the same time a 2000 Chevrolet Ventura Van driven by Brandy Crowder 26 of Coleman, Texas was heading south on South Colorado Street.  In the van was a seven week-old child, a three-year-old and an 18 month old child.

As the pickup was traveling east, at the intersection of Colorado and 4th Streets there was a yield sign.  However, as the pickup crossed Colorado the van struck the pickup spinning it around and then the pickup flipped landing on its top.  At the impact the passenger Calvillo was partially ejected from the vehicle receiving head injuries.  Calvillo was transported to Coleman County Medical Center by CCMC EMS where he was pronounced dead.  Sgt. Cogdill advised the driver of the van, Crowder, was wearing a seat belt, the 3 year old was wearing a seat belt and the other two small children were buckled up in car seats.  At this time it is believed the driver of the pickup, Padilla was wearing a seat belt, passenger Salazar was also wearing a seat belt and it is believed at this time Calvillo was also wearing a seat belt.  However, an investigation continues on the accident.  Sgt. Cogdill was assisted at the scene of the accident by DPS Trooper Chris Delgado, Gary Berry with the Coleman County Sheriff’s office, Coleman County Constable Joe Watson, Coleman County EMS, the Coleman Fire Department and other Coleman officers and individuals assisting where needed.
