Betty Sue Jenkins Schmidt, age 67, of San Angelo, passed away Saturday, May 1, 2004 at Shannon Hospital in San Angelo. Funeral services were 1:00 p. m. Monday, May 3, 2004 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel in Coleman with Rev. Barbara Dyke officiating. Burial followed in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. She was born Betty Sue Jenkins on April 15, 1937 in Crews, Runnels County, Texas and was a daughter of the late Lister and Ruby Gray Jenkins. She grew up in Novice and graduated from Novice High School in 1956. On December 28, 1958 she married Felix Schmidt in Coleman. Betty lived in Coleman prior to moving to San Angelo in 1972 and had lived there since that time. While living in Coleman she worked at Gray Mercantile, Coulsen's Drug Store and Owl Drug Store. In San Angelo she worked for Fashion Shop, M. L. Leddy Boot and National Motor Club. She was a member of Day Memorial Methodist Church in San Angelo. When her sons were young she served as a Den Mother and she loved sewing, camping and shopping. Survivors include her husband, Felix Schmidt of San Angelo; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Melissa Schmidt and Tony and Ruthie Schmidt all of San Angelo; eight grandchildren, Ashley Schmidt, Amber Schmidt, Arika Schmidt, Stacey and husband Jeremy Block, Rebecca Johnson, Teresa and husband T. J. Emeott, Whitney Schmidt and Nicholas Roof; one great-grandchild, Katie Johnson; one brother, Franklin Jenkins of Big Spring, Texas; three sisters, Burnell Nichols, Reba Grosshans and Ruby Jean Smith all of San Angelo. She was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, Felix and Gertrude Schmidt; three brothers, Quincy, Wesley and Melvin Jenkins and one sister, Mollie Gray. Mrs. W. O. White, born Thesia Smith, passed from this life to be with her Lord Jesus on May 1, 2004 at an Abilene nursing home at the age of 96. Services were held Monday, May 3, 2004, at North's Memorial Chapel in Abilene with Mike Cope officiating. Burial was held in the Coleman Cemetery, in Coleman, Texas, under the direction of North's Funeral Home. Thesia was the last of ten children of N.G. Smith and wife. She grew up on her dad's ranch near Glen Cove, Texas. While in school she met W. O. White and they were wed in Coleman, Texas on November 22,1925. One son, Wendell, was born in 1938. After moving to Abilene in 1956, she worked at Thornton's and Leonard's Department Stores, and Marbridge house for girls. After retiring she became a housewife. Thesia and W. O. were long time members at Highland Church of Christ where they were the oldest couple at 78 years of marriage. Mrs. White was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters as well as her husband, W.O. White. Survivors include a son, Wendell O. White of Abilene and numerous relatives and friends. Margaret Jane (Janie) Hoover, age 86, of Coleman, died Sunday, May 2, 2004 at Coleman Healthcare Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p. m. Wednesday, May 5, 2004 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Northway officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. She was born Margaret Jane Smith on December 12, 1917, a daughter of the late Cap and Maggie Smith. She grew up in Coleman and attended school at Anderson and Brown Ranch. On January 7, 1951 she married Howard Neil Hoover in Portales, New Mexico and he preceded her in death on August 2, 1994. She lived in Arizona, Deer Park, Kermit, Abilene and returned to Coleman in 1985. Janie was a Licensed Vocational Nurse and worked at various nursing homes. She was a Baptist. Survivors include one son, Richard Neil Hoover of Coleman; one daughter and son-in-law, Vicki Joy and Tommy Williamson of Port O'Connor, Texas; two granddaughters, Stacey Lee Creppon of Elgin, Texas and Margaret Elizabeth Hoover of Coleman; one step-grandchild, Destiny Densman of Coleman; six great-grandchildren, Kristie Diane Creppon, James Wesley Creppon, Mayo McCrea Williamson, Maison Lynn Williamson, Desiree Hollingsworth and Alexandria Densman; two sisters, Leona Bowers and Doris Moore both of Coleman; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, Christopher Leon Williamson; five sisters and two brothers. Opal S. Duke, age 90, of Coleman, died Monday, May 3, 2004 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home in Coleman. Graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a. m. Thursday, May 6, 2004 at Mission Park North Cemetery in San Antonio with her son-in-law Dr. Charles Sheffield officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home, Coleman, Texas. She was born Opal Stewart on August 13, 1913 in Luling, Texas and was the daughter of J. C. and Molly Murphy Stewart. She grew up in the Rio Grande Valley and graduated from Edinburgh High School in 1928. On October 11, 1929 she married Cleveland J. Duke in San Antonio and he preceded her in death on July 28, 1978. Opal lived in San Antonio for many years, worked as a clerk at Kelly Field during World War II and later as a clerk at Winn's Department Store. She moved to Coleman in 1988 and was a member of Concho Baptist Church in Coleman. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Stewart and Donna Duke of Milton, West Virginia; one daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Dr. Charles Sheffield of Coleman; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Helen D. Harris, age 78, of Brownwood, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at a Brownwood nursing home. Graveside services were Friday at 11:00 a. m. at the Coleman City Cemetery with Rev. Ruth Huber-Rohlfs officiating, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood. She was born on November 9, 1925 in Coleman, Texas the daughter of the late Mack and Lillie Evers Davis. She had worked in Brownwood during the mid 1970¹s as a Legal Secretary for the Herman Bennett Co. before moving to Midland. She later returned to Brownwood in 1995. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Brownwood and attended the Brewer Friendship Sunday School Class. She also volunteered at the Good Samaritan Ministries and Ladies Auxiliary of Brownwood and was a member of the Legal Secretary Association in both the Midland and Brownwood Chapters. Survivors include one sister, Juanell Dresing and husband Jack of Houston, one brother, Bill Davis and wife MaryAnn of San Antonio, one sister-in-law, Joy Davis of Brownwood; seven nieces and nephews and eight great nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hazel L. Snow, age 83 of Brownwood, passed away May 5, 2004 at Songbird Lodge in Brownwood. Funeral services were held Friday, May 7, 2004 at 11:30 a. m. at the North Coleman Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Roberts officiating. Burial followed at the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman. She was born January 10, 1921 in Coleman County, Texas, the daughter of the late Arthur Leonard and Annie Kelly Steffey. On July 22, 1945 she married Delbert Snow, Sr. in Coleman. They had lived in Coleman County up until the year 2000. She was a retired cook and homemaker, and a member of the North Coleman Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She is survived by her husband, Delbert Snow, Sr.; one daughter, Betty Neal of Brownwood; one son, Delbert, Jr. and wife Janice of Brownwood; four sisters, Wilma White and Thelma Barkemeyer of Coleman, Ruby Summuror of Waco and Fannie Mae Calhoon of Clyde; five brothers, Jerry, James and Richard Steffey of Coleman, Arthur Steffey of Brownwood and Derrel Steffey of Waco. Graveside services were held Monday, May 10, 2004 in the Santa Anna Cemetery for a former Santa Anna native, Sally Bess Evans-Goodenough, age 89, who died at her home in Killeen, Texas on May 5, 2004. Sally Bess was born March 19, 1915 to the late Charles W. and Maud West Evans. She attended the Santa Anna schools, graduating with the class of 1932 and furthering her education elsewhere. She was married to Major Fred Hess Goodenough on October 4, 1941 and they celebrated 40 years of marriage. Living a career military life, they made their home in many places. Major Goodenough preceded her in death July 16, 1982. Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Goodenough; and one son, Charles Goodenough both of Killeen. One infant son preceded her in death in 1942. A. E. "Ab" Folkner, age 88, of Coleman, died Thursday, May 6, 2004 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home in Coleman. Funeral service was held at 10:00 a. m. Saturday, May 8, 2004 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Ab was born on March 7, 1916 in Sipe Springs, Texas and was a son of the late Silas L. and Rozella E. Noonkester Folkner. He grew up in Rising Star and attended school there, moving to Coleman in 1932. On May 26, 1934 he married Ruby Irene Ray in Coleman and she preceded him in death in 1985. Ab worked for Taylor Motor Company for 14 years and then owned and operated Folkner¹s Garage for many years. He was a retired Coleman Volunteer Fireman, former Boy Scout Leader and a member of Oddfellow Lodge #35. He was a member of Concho Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Rosa Folkner Baker and husband Charles of Talpa; two sons, Robert E. Folkner and wife Sherry of Lubbock and Jimmie P. Folkner and wife Lynn of Dallas; one sister, Vera Dean Seabolt of Coleman; eight grandchildren, Chuck Baker (and wife Nancy), Kenneth Baker (and wife Jan), James Baker, Lisa Milligan (and husband Gunner), Kent Folkner (and wife Christy), Robin Coggin, Adam Manson and Robert Manson; 11 great- grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Ernestine Heathcot of Paris, Arkansas, Fay Graham and Florence Ray both of Coleman; numerous nieces and nephews. Gail Podlevsky, age 48, of Burkett, died Thursday, May 6, 2004 at Coleman County Medical Center. No services are scheduled. The body will be cremated. Stevens Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Podlevsky was born January 28, 1956 in Los Angeles, California, a daughter of Mildred Clark Coffey and the late T. R. Coffey. She attended school in Los Angeles and married Jerry Podlevsky in California. She worked as a secretary while living in California and moved to Burkett in 1981. She worked at Holiday Hill Nursing Home and Coleman Healthcare Center as a Nurse¹s Aide. She was a loving wife and mother. Survivors include her husband, Jerry Podlevsky of Burkett; two sons, Brandon and Derek Podlevsky of Burkett; her mother, Mildred Coffey of Burkett; one sister and two brothers-in-law, Jan and Edwin Arestando of Coleman and Robert Podlevsky of Burkett; three nephews, Daniel Podlevsky of Burkett and Josh and Aaron Arestando of Coleman; three nieces; Justine, Emily and Megan Arestando of Coleman. Phillip M. Berry, 61, died Saturday, May 8, 2004 in an Abilene hospital. Graveside services were Sunday at 2:00 p. m. in the Coleman Cemetery, with Reverend Greg Rake officiating, directed by Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home in Tuscola. Phillip was born October 16, 1942, in Abilene to Hap and Lillian Pritchard Berry. He graduated from Coleman High School and served in the United States Navy as a First Class Petty Officer during the Vietnam Conflict. He lived in Tuscola from 1975 to 1985, moving back to Abilene where he spent most of his life. He was an auto body repairman. Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Gary Berry. Survivors include one son, Shannon Berry, and wife Dana of Aspermont; three daughters, Sharla Cranfill and husband Kenny of Frisco, Shellie "Tuffy" Berry and Sheila "Bit" Berry of Tuscola; his former wife and good friend, Glynda Carter of Tuscola; two sisters, Vonda Jackson of Abilene and Joann Horn of Lake Brownwood; and six grandchildren. William F. "Bill" Sides, 89, passed away Saturday, May 8, 2004, in Fort Worth. Funeral service will be 10 a. m. Wednesday at Altamesa Church of Christ with burial to follow in Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p. m. today (Tuesday) at Greenwood Funeral Home, 3100 White Settlement Road, Fort Worth, Texas. Memorials may be made to Scottish Rite Children's Hospital of Dallas or Central Texas Children's Home in Buda. William was born Sept. 26, 1914, in Coleman County. He was the seventh child of 11. He moved to Fort Worth in the late 1930's. He started working at General Dynamics in 1941, retiring after 38 years. He was a member of the Southside Masonic Lodge and was a bedouin with the Moslah Shrine. Clyde A. Sissom, 91, of Clyde, died Saturday, May 8, 2004 at an Abilene hospital. Services will be today (Tuesday) at 11:00 a. m. at the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rocky Burrow officiating. Burial will be in the Clyde Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home. Mr. Sissom was born October 11, 1912 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma to Asa William and Amanda Barbara Cook Sissom. He grew up and attended school in the Bradshaw/Winters area. He served as a corporal in the Army Air Force. He married Mary Keith in San Angelo, Texas on August 16, 1969. He worked as a ranch hand for five years and retired after 26 years from Mrs. Baird¹s Bakery. Edora Crye, age 86, lifelong Coleman resident, died Sunday, May 9, 2004 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. Funeral services will be 3:00 p. m. today (Tuesday, May 11, 2004) at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Mrs. Crye was born September 19, 1917 in Coleman, a daughter of W. O. and Birdie Lee Fleming Barnett. She grew up in Coleman and attended Coleman schools. She married John Wesley Crye on February 16, 1938 in Coleman. He preceded her in death on May 11, 1976. She was a homemaker and a member of the Elm Street Church of Christ. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, John Wayne and Ginger Crye of Belton, James Donald and Billie Ann Crye of Coleman; one daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Ken Greaves of Coleman; one sister, Lorain Cole of Coleman; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Sally Mae Buford, age 75, of McAlester, Oklahoma died Sunday, May 9, 2004 at a McAlester nursing home. Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Wednesday with Don Brewer officiating at Memory Gardens Cemetery, under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service. The family will receive friends at Bishop Funeral Home in McAlester, Oklahoma tonight (Tuesday) from 6 until 8 p. m. Sally Mae Buford was born on January 1, 1929 in Cameron, Oklahoma to Everett and Alta Spain Hunter. She graduated from McAlester High School and married Henry Buford on September 2, 1959 in Poteau, Oklahoma. Sally then worked for Southwestern Bell Telecommunications as a phone operator for 30 years until her retirement. She then worked for the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority staying 10 years. Sally attended the Church of Christ and enjoyed the time spent with family and friends. Survivors include her

William Free, age 16, of Santa Anna, died Sunday, May 9, 2004 at San Angelo Community Medical Center. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a. m. Friday, May 14, 2004 at First Baptist Church in Santa Anna with Pastor Bruce Hess officiating. Burial will follow in the Santa Anna Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman. William was born December 7, 1987, in Beaumont, Texas, a son of Jimmy Lee Free, Sr. and Nancy Jane Farmer Free. He grew up in Nederland and moved to Santa Anna seven months ago. He attended school in Nederland and Santa Anna and was a Freshman at Santa Anna High School. He was Baptist. Survivors include his legal guardians, Jimmy and Sherry Jones of Santa Anna; his father, Jimmy Free, Sr. of Deweyville, Texas; four sisters, Teresa Johnson of Port Arthur, Texas, Christine Free of Carlsbad, Texas, Lisa Free of Nederland, Texas and Ruby Free of Santa Anna; one brother, Jimmy Free, Jr. of Beaumont; two step-brothers, Dylin Bland and Kolbey Bland both of Santa Anna; four nephews and two nieces; his girlfriend, Misty. Claudia Mae Hayes, of Midland, Texas passed away Monday, May 10, 2004. Graveside services have been scheduled for 3:00 p. m. Friday, May 14th, at Resthaven Memorial Park with Reverend Bob Porterfield officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Highway, Midland, Texas. The family will receive friends at Ellis Funeral Home tonight (Thursday) between the hours of 7:00 p. m. and 9:00 p. m. She was born August 30, 1935 in Santa Anna, Texas. Claudia lived in Coleman County until her teenage years, moving to Kermit, Texas in 1950. She met A. J. Hayes and the couple was married in 1953 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. They were married for 47 years. Claudia made her home in Midland and worked for Trinity Towers and Metro Bank which at the time of her retirement was United Bank. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents, Ben and and Mae Smith. Claudia is survived by her daughters, Angela Hayes Wynne and Tonya Vasquez, both of Midland, Texas; a brother, John Martin of Flower Mound, Texas; sisters, Donna Reeves and Karen Martin, both of Odessa, Texas; grandchildren, Candace Wynne, Amber Wynne, Ashley Wynne, Jessica Castillo and Haley Castillo; great-grandchildren, Aniya Urias and McKenna Urias; niece, Deney Dobbs and a host of other nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services for Jack C. Parker, 79, of Brownwood, were held at 10 a. m. Saturday in Greenleaf Cemetery with Rev. Edd Taylor officiating, under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home. Mr. Parker died Tuesday, May 11, 2004 in Brownwood. He was born March 16, 1925 in Edge, Texas to Bert and Thelma Parker. He served his country in World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European Theater and worked as a conductor for Santa Fe Railway for 43 years before retirement. On June 2, 1979, he married Regina Browning Ply in Brownwood. He had been a resident of Brownwood since 1985, moving there from Winslow, Arizona. Jack was a member of the Brown County Sheriff's Posse and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Winslow. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Steve Parker and his wife, Shirley of Kingman, Arizona, Raymond Parker and wife, Carrie, of Flagstaff, Arizona, Kenneth Parker and his wife, Julie, of Las Vegas, Nevada; four daughters, Janey Taylor and husband, Eddy, of Shreveport, Louisiana, Gayle Plummer of San Angelo, Susan Parris and her husband, Gary, of Austin, Diane Smith and her husband, Larry, of Santa Anna; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Cecil Parker and a sister, Edith Barnum of Brownwood. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II and was wounded in Okinawa; he then served 1 1/2 years in Oahu, Hawaii. On December 18, 1946, he married Blanche Howe in Brownwood. Mr. Byrd farmed and ranched at Cross Cut all of his life. He was the fourth generation of his family to live in the Cross Cut community. O. B. became a member of the Methodist Church at Cross Cut while he was in grade school. Later the church merged with the First United Methodist Church in Cross Plains. He served for many years on various boards of the church as well as treasurer of the Cross Cut Cemetery Association for many years. O. B. used his G.I. Bill from WW II to obtain his Flight Instructors Rating and instructed in Brownwood. He has served as director of Brown County Farm Bureau since it was organized in 1953, and served as president seven different times. He served as director of Brown-Mills County Soil Conservation Service, which later became Pecan Bayou Soil and Water Conservation Association. He has served as Chairman of the board for many years. He was a member and past Master of the Masons in Cross Plains, Texas, member of Suez Shrine in San Angelo, and a member of the Oriental Band of the Heart of Texas Shrine Club of Brownwood, where he played a drum. He served as President of the H.O.T. Shrine Club of Brownwood and as President of the band. Survivors include his wife, Blanche of Brownwood; sisters-in-law, Joyce Fore and husband J. B. Fore, and Anna Mahan; and numerous cousins including Billy Williams and Bonnie Barr, both of Coleman, Lynn Lawlis of Brownwood; an aunt, Lela Murle Lawlis of Coleman, as well as several nieces and nephews. Mr. Gregory N. Crawford, age 48 of Big Spring, passed away at his residence May 11, 2004. Graveside service will be at 11:00 a. m. today (Thursday, May 27, 2004) in the Brown Ranch Cemetery with Mr. Sam Wilson officiating and the interment will follow under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman. Mr. Crawford was born in Big Spring on July 15, 1955, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall and Irene Crawford. He was a graduate of Big Spring High School and of college. J. C. McCabe, age 85, of Woodsboro and former Coleman County resident, died Friday, May 14, 2004 at Christus Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi. Graveside services will be 1:00 p. m. Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at the Coleman Cemetery Pavilion with Joe Hailey officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Mr. McCabe was born September 15, 1918 in Lee County, Texas, a son of Joe and Sally Adcock McCabe. He grew up and attended school in Burkett and served in the United States Army during World War II. He married Evelyn Barnes on May 10, 1946 in San Angelo. He worked in the oil fields as a driller and rough-neck. He moved to Woodsboro in 2001 from San Angelo and was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn McCabe of Woodsboro; two sons, C. D. McCabe of Woodsboro, Jimmy McCabe of Coppell; one brother, Bill McCabe of Brownwood; one sister, Ann Larimore of San Angelo; three grandchildren, Mathew McCabe of Coppell, Robbie Bigham of Kerrville, Michael McCabe of Fayetteville, Arkansas and four great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker, a Methodist and a 34-year resident of Southside Village. She was preceded in death by her parents, a special friend, Roy Hilmer Koch, and two sisters, Ena Burt Estess and Addie Davis. She was born September 5, 1925 in Gouldbusk, Texas to William and Linnie Allen. Ruby grew up in Coleman County, Texas. She lived in the Glen Cove Community until she married. Ruby graduated from Centennial High School near Valera, Texas. She married William R. Futrell October 10, 1946 in Coleman, Texas. She was a member of Fairmont Park Church of Christ. In Ruby's teenage years, she enjoyed playing the guitar and singing. She performed in many community and school musicals. Ruby enjoyed helping others, taking food and visiting the sick. Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her husband, William R.; her son Billy W. Futrell and wife Kathy; grandchildren, Ashlee Futrell and Kelly Futrell; her brother, Elvin R. Allen; her niece, Sue Taylor. She is also survived by many other nieces and nephews. Janette Lovelady Winstead Turner, age 70, longtime Coleman resident, died Saturday, May 15, 2004 at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral services were 10:00 a. m. Monday, May 17, 2004 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ron White officiating. Burial followed in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Mrs. Turner was born July 30, 1933 in Santa Anna, a daughter of James Culberson Lovelady and Freda Miller Lovelady. She married Roy Anderson Winstead on April 19, 1958 in Coleman. He preceded her in death on April 13, 1970. She later married Homer Turner in Livingston, Texas. He preceded her in death on June 3, 2003. Mrs. Turner grew up in Santa Anna and graduated from Santa Anna High School. She worked as an Licensed Vocational Nurse at the Overall-Morris Hospital, now Coleman County Medical Center, Leisure Lodge Nursing Home, Holiday Hill Nursing Home and worked at the 4-H Center at Lake Brownwood. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Coleman. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, James Roy and Jody Winstead of Coleman; one daughter and son-in-law, Lindra Kae and Monty Beard of Coleman; two sisters, Carolyn Lewis of St. Louis, Missouri, Alice Anna Smith of Palm Coast, Florida; five grandchildren, Brice, Benjamin and Jessica Faries of Coleman, Jolie and Jenna Winstead of Coleman; two great-grandchildren, Audrey and Daniel Faries of Brownwood; three step-children, Greg Turner of Cross Plains, Mike Turner of Morgan Mills, Delbert Turner of Stephenville and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside services for John Henry Martin, Jr., age 76, of Brownwood were held May 20th at the Marion Cemetery in McCulloch County. Mr. Martin died May 18, 2004, in Brownwood. He was born in Gouldbusk, Texas to John Henry and Linnie Mae Martin of Mason, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, David Ray Martin; two brothers, Rufus Ray Martin and Earl Roy Martin; and one sister, Ivy Mae Atchley of Mason. A man killed Wednesday outside Valera has been identified by the Coleman County Sheriff's Office as Davey Beal, 54. Beal died after he apparently suffered a seizure and fell off the tractor he was riding. The tractor was pulling a shredder, which ran over him, said Sheriff Wade Turner. Beal suffered from a medical condition that induced seizures, he added. ''It's unknown for sure what happened,'' Turner said. ''He slumped over and fell off backward.'' Two people witnessed the incident, including Beal's wife, who tried to catch the tractor as Beal slumped over, Turner said. Turner said no autopsy was performed, and that the cause of death was listed as having been run over by the shredder. ''It was just one of those bad old accidents,'' Turner said. He was born the son of Bobbie Joe Beal and Frances Jones Beal Richardson on January 31, 1950. He graduated from Santa Anna High School and was a member of the National Guard and retired as a Staff Sgt. He was a carpenter, building contractor and a former Border Patrol Agent. Davey was a member of the Valera Baptist Church. Joyce Jones, age 73, of Coleman, died Thursday, May 20, 2004 at Coleman Health Care Center. Graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 p. m. Sunday, May 23, 2004 at Adams Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. She was born Joyce Walker on June 11, 1930 in Novice, Texas, a daughter of the late William Oscar Walker and Alice Belle Jones Walker. She grew up in Goldsboro and Oplin and attended school there. She was married to Cylas Wesley Burton in 1945 and he preceded her in death. Joyce lived in Texas, Louisiana, Washington and Arkansas, moving to Coleman in 1993. On March 24, 1989 she married William T. (Bill) Jones and he died on November 26, 1994. She had worked as the assistant manager at the Northside Allsup's in Coleman and at a greenhouse and nursery in DeRidder, Louisiana. She attended Hillcrest Church of Christ and was a member of Coleman County Historical Commission. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Clayton and Elsie Burton of Eden, Texas; two grandsons, Eric Burton and Paul Burton both of Coleman; one granddaughter, Brittney Lee Burton of Grapevine, Texas; two step-granddaughters, LaVonda James of Coleman and Cindy Watts of Austin; five step-great-grandchildren; two step great-great grandchildren; two brothers, James Carroll Walker of Coleman and Robert Junior Walker of Ranger; one sister, Bobbie Wagnon of Valera; numerous nieces and nephews. Dessie Lonell Strickland, 80, went peacefully to be with her beloved Lord, Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Heritage Oaks Nursing Home in Ballinger. Service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, at Harris Avenue Baptist Church with Brother A. J. Kennemer and Brother Travis Monday officiating. Burial will be in Lawnhaven Cemetery. She was born May 4, 1924, in Peacock, Texas, to Maggie and Van Phillips. She married the love of her life, Aaron Strickland, July 22, 1948. She was known as “Pete” to her immediate family. Dessie began her career as a cashier at Modern Way, continued to work for Buddies and retired after 20 years with Winn Dixie. She will be remembered by all her customers for her kind and giving heart, her beautiful smile, and hair. She is survived by her two daughters, Jeannie Duncan, and husband, Curtis, from San Angelo and Ramona Lonell Sturman, and husband, Bob, of Kingman, Arizona; two grandchildren, Dave Renfro of Illinois and Penny Naff of Oregon; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Hughlett of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Billie Gribble of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Sue Smith of Coleman; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dessie was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and her husband of 34 years. Gene Tipton, age 67, of Canyon, and former long-time Coleman resident, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004 in an Amarillo hospital. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p. m. Friday, May 28, 2004 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Gene was born on August 13, 1936 in Big Spring, Texas and was a son of the late Silby and Faye Beal Tipton. He moved to Coleman as a small child and attended school in Coleman, graduating from Coleman High School in 1954. Gene served his country in the U. S. Army and was stationed in Germany. In 1958 he married Sandra LeBlanc in Shamrock, Texas. He worked all of his life in the oil field and pipeline construction. He moved to Canyon three years ago. While living in Coleman, he was a member of Central Baptist Church and at the time of his death was a member of San Jacinto Baptist in Amarillo. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Tipton of Canyon; three children, Carolynn Tipton of Coleman, Robert Tipton of Cochise, Arizona and Shanna Tipton of Canyon; four grandchildren, Chris Whittington and Cody Lape both of Coleman, Warren and Braydon Tipton both of Arizona; four great-grandchildren, Rhiannon and Jolie Ann Rosales both of Canyon, Chaunci and Clayton Watson both of Coleman; one brother, A. She was born Ina Fay Ray on April 9, 1928 in Coleman, a daughter of Robert Bentley Ray and Viola Elizabeth Jackson Ray. She grew up and in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School. She married Arnold Lee Graham on January 4, 1945 in Coleman. He preceded her in death on November 21, 1981. She worked as a Lab and X-Ray Technician for Overall-Morris Hospital (now Coleman County Medical Center) and Dr. J. P. Jones. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and Concho Baptist Church. Mr. White was born March 8, 1929 in Coleman County to Nelson and Pearl White. He graduated from high school in Coleman, attended Prairie View University and served in the United States Army. Mr. White owned and operated his own business as a chef, "Chef's Corner," from 1978 to 1985. He married Iva Dell Moore Ray in Del Rio. Survivors are three sons, James Ray of Arlington, Victor Ray and I. J. Graveside services were held in Brownwood, Texas at the Greenleaf Cemetery Wednesday, June 2, 2004 for a Santa Anna native, Roxie Lane-Jackson. Mrs. Jackson, age 82, died Sunday, May 30, 2004 at a Brownwood nursing facility. Roxie, the daughter of the late J. F. and Fannie L. Lane, was born June 4, 1921. She attended the Santa Anna schools, graduating with the class of 1939. In 1940, she married and moved to California where she made her home until moving to Brownwood in 1989. She was a member of the Southside Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Donald Haynes of Diamond Springs, California and Charles Haynes of New Market, Alabama; several nieces and nephews. James William Rice, Jr., 70, of Hico, died Sunday, May 30, 2004. Graveside service was held at 10 a. m. Wednesday at Center Valley Cemetery in Hamilton County with the Rev. John Weaver officiating. Mr. Rice was born February 10, 1934 in Coleman County, Texas, the son of James William Rice, Sr. and Mary Amanda Jennings Rice. He was married to Martha Oustad on June 4, 1954, in Brownwood. A graduate of Santa Anna High School, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Education degree from Howard Payne College and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Stephen F. Austin University. Mr. Rice wrote and illustrated children's books and novels with Pelican Publishing Company of Gretna, Louisiana and taught art in Southeastern Louisiana University, Louisiana State University and Dallas Baptist University. He also was a band director at Hico and Shamrock high schools. He was a member of Natalbany Baptist Church, Natalbany, Louisiana and of the Western Writers of America. For five years he worked with the Texas Artist in Residence program and over the past 25 years, he spoke to thousands of school children throughout the nation about his love of art and music. He played saxophone and piano with Fred and the Gang for more than 25 years. He regularly played music at Hillcrest Nursing Home, Forrest Ridge Nursing Home, Hamilton Senior Citizens Center and Honey Creek Retirement Center. Survivors include his wife, Martha Rice of Hico; his children, Zel and Barbara Rice of Tickfaw, Louisiana, Maria and James Weaver, of Hamilton, Lyn and Connie Rice of Blanket, Patti Rice of Alexandria, Virginia and Jason and Shelli Rice of Stephenville; a brother, Eddy Rice of Brownwood; a sister, Loretta Angel of Rancho Santa Fe, California; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
