Odell Bairrington, 81

Odell Bairrington, age 81, of Quanah, Texas died Friday, August 1, 2003 in Wichita Falls.  Funeral services were Saturday at 2 p. m. at Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel in Vernon with Rev. Danny Hodgkins of Calvary Baptist Church of Wichita Falls officiating.  Interment was in Wilbarger Memorial Park, under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home of Vernon.

Mr. Bairrington was born March 7, 1922 in Hubbard, Texas, a son of the late Jess and Minerva “Callie” Caroline Hudgens Bairrington.  He married Dorothy Lee Babbitt on November 20, 1944 in Coleman, Texas; she preceded him in death on February 24, 2000.  He moved from Coleman to Vernon where he spent most all of his life.  He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.  He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Vernon and a self-employed trucker.

He is survived by one daughter, Deanna Taylor of Quanah, Texas; one son, Clifford “Lucky” Bairrington of Quanah, Texas; two sisters, Ima Siddall of Odessa and Billie Jones; six grandchildren, Brandi, Kim, Jamie, Freddie, Phillip and Cody; and four great-grandchildren, Haiden, Taylor, Morgan and Danielle.

Pallbearers were Maurice Rosalez, Rob Abernathy, Donny Goodrum, H. H. Haney, Charles Smith and D. B. Darnell. 
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wichita Falls.

Ruby DeSha, 86

Ruby DeSha, age 86, of Dallas, Texas (formerly of Santa Anna) passed away Friday, August 1, 2003 at 10:40 a. m. at Medical Center of Lancaster in Lancaster, Texas.  Graveside services were 3:00 p. m. Sunday at the Trickham Cemetery with Rev. James Ford officiating.  Interment followed with Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna in charge of arrangements.

Ruby was born June 11, 1917 in Coleman County to the late Albert and Emily Leonard Baker.  She was reared in Coleman County where she attended school.  Ruby married Thomas Andrew “Buddy” DeSha in Santa Anna on March 8, 1937 and they celebrated 37 years of marriage.  Buddy preceded her in death in 1974.  Santa Anna was her home until 1993 when she moved to Dallas where she has since resided.  Ruby was a member of the Assembly of God Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Joyce DeSha and Sandra DeSha Lacy, both of Dallas; a sister, Arthel Davis of Dallas; granddaughter, Donna and husband Keith Wilbur of Washagul, Washington; and two great-grandchildren, Corey Wilbur and Celia Wilbur, both of Washagul, Washington. Ruby was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.

Aubrey B. French, 70

Aubrey B. French, age 70, of Bangs died Saturday, August 2, 2003 at a nursing facility in Fort Worth.  Private interment was held in the Bangs Cemetery, under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood.

He was born January 25, 1933 in Rockwood, Texas, the son of the late Morgan Earl and Rubye Deal French and was reared in Bangs.  He graduated from Bangs High School and had lived the last four years in Fort Worth.  Mr. French was a retired electronic technician.  He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include three sisters, Hazel Hargrove and Jo Dotson, both of Fort Worth and Lillian Goodwin of Jacksonville, Florida; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Edna Stewart Clarke, 78

Mrs. Edna Stewart Clarke, 78, passed away on Sunday, August 3, 2003.  Graveside services at the Voss Cemetery were held Friday, August 8, 2003 at 10:00 a. m. under the direction of Walker Funeral Home with Rev. Kermit Sorrells officiating.

Edna was born on August 24, 1924 in Coleman County, to J. T. Stewart and Pinkie Sue Stewart.

Survivors include her husband, Charles W. Clarke of Amarillo, one daughter, Sue Keeton Vogler and husband Harry of Hereford; one grandson, Richard C. Warton and wife Jessica, of Midland; and three great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by three brothers Jack Stewart of Odessa, Ray Stewart and wife Dot of Carrollton, Jerry Stewart of Pipe Creek, Texas, and one sister Jean Lee Dollins and husband Floyd of Freer, Texas.

Tommy Rush, 63

Tommy Rush, of Talpa, Texas, noted horse breeder and trader, passed away August 4, 2003 following surgery in a San Angelo Medical Center.  Visitation will be at Stevens Funeral Home, Coleman, Texas today (Tuesday) from 6 to 8 p. m.  A service of remembrance in the cowboy style will be held Saturday, August 9, at 2:00 p. m. at Lost Track Livestock Center, Talpa, Texas.

Tommy was born December 9, 1939 in Coleman to Raymond and Frances Rush of Talpa, Texas who preceded him in death in 1997.  Tommy had a lifelong love of horses which he expressed in many ways.  He bred and purchased horses for show, pleasure, work, rodeo and racing.  He was known to many as an authority on the Foundation Quarter Horse movement and published a news magazine on the subject for several years called The Remuda.  He established a successful regional horse auction in Talpa called Lost Track Livestock Center and West Texas Horse Sales.  Auctions of all types, steer roping and other activities were held there regularly.  He was a member of the National Foundation Quarter Horse Association (NFQHA) and American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA).

A victim of polio since the age of two, Tommy overcame many obstacles in his life and left a mark of determination and perseverance we will never forget.  He did not let his challenges keep him from having a great sense of humor and being a great storyteller.  He wrote excellent cowboy poetry and was the historian for the Talpa area and the ranching history there.  His grandfather, Albert V. Livingston, was a pioneer rancher in the area and supplied Tommy with inspiration.  Tommy was loved and supported by many people in his life and his family wishes to express their profound appreciation.

He is survived by two sisters, Peggy Martin and husband Francis of Midland, Texas and Ginger Sneed and husband Bill of Talpa, Texas; and a brother, Mike Rush and wife Terry Albright of Odessa, Texas.  He has three nieces and four nephews and several great nieces and nephews.

Memorial gifts in memory of Tommy may be sent to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, Abilene, Texas or to your local Rotary Club in support of their efforts to rid polio from the world forever.

Dorothy Louise Yates

Dorothy Louise Yates was born June 29, 1923 in New Boston, Texas and passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2003 in Dallas, Texas.  Funeral services were held Friday at 10 a. m. at the White Rock United Methodist Prayer Chapel in Dallas.  Graveside services were held at the Sulphur Bluff Cemetery in Sulphur Bluff, Texas at 2:30 p. m. with burial following.  Oak Cliff Funeral Chapel and Cremation Services in were in charge of arrangements.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Garland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Frank E. Yates on February 4, 1995.  Survivors include her children: Anna Houston and husband Don, Sam Yates and wife Joyce, Patsy Yates Konz and husband Jim, Sandra Wood and husband George; one sister-in-law, Bernelle Harrison; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Sonya Sue Berry, 67

Sonya Sue Berry, age 67, of Deer Park, Texas passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at 8:08 p. m. at Kindred Hospital Bay Area in Pasadena.  Services will be Friday at 11:00 a. m. at the Coleman Cemetery Pavilion with Joe Hailey officiating.  Interment will follow under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman.  Family visitation will be today (Thursday) from 7 - 9 p. m. at Henderson Funeral Home.

Sonya was born on November 12, 1935 in Wingate, Taylor County, Texas to Latayne Kendrick Ragsdale and the late Loy H. Ragsdale.  She was raised in Abilene where she graduated from Abilene High School in 1953.  She continued her education at San Jacinto College graduating in 1973.  Sonya married Gary Wayne Berry in Abilene, Texas in 1954 and they celebrated 36 years of marriage.  Gary preceded her in death in 1990.  She was a member of the Church of Christ and a resident of Deer Park for 35 years.  Sonya was a legal and an oil and gas secretary and worked in civil service at Dyess Air Force Base and White Sands Missile Range in Alamogordo, New Mexico.  She retired in 1991.

Survivors include a daughter, Tonya D. Berry of Deer Park, Texas; two sons, Mark Wayne Berry and Brenton Von Berry, both of Deer Park, Texas; her mother, Latayne Kendrick Neas of Duncan, Oklahoma; a sister, Nan Marie and husband Bill Masch of Duncan, Oklahoma; half-sister, Crystal Bryant of Fort Worth, Texas; half brother, Dixon and wife Judy Neas of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; two sisters-in-law, Vonda and husband Joe Jackson of Abilene, Texas and Joann Horn of Brownwood, Texas; brother-in-law, Phillip Berry of Abilene, Texas; two aunts, Joan Moore of Abilene, Texas and Van Pritchard of El Centro, California; uncle, Dixon Kendrick of Hawaii; and several nieces and nephews.

Lorene Rice, 78

Lorene Rice, age 78, of Santa Anna, Texas passed away Thursday, August 7, 2003 at 4:35 p. m. at her residence in Santa Anna.  Services were Saturday at 11:00 a. m. at the First United Methodist Church of Santa Anna with Rev. James Ford and Rev. Art Allen officiating.  Interment followed at the Trickham Cemetery, under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna.

She was born Tressa Lorene Featherston on February 19, 1925 in Trickham, Texas to the late Robert Bond and Austella Lillie Lindley Featherston.  Lorene was reared in Coleman County where she attended the Trickham schools and was a 1942 graduate of Santa Anna High School.  She married Delbern Rice on September 5, 1942 in Santa Anna.  Lorene was a member of the Methodist Church and the Eastern Star.  She was a homemaker and a bookkeeper.

Survivors include two sons, Lynn Rice of Arlington and Wendell Rice of Trickham; granddaughter, Melissa Rice Gunter of Arlington; and five grandsons, Jim Rice of Trickham, Alan Rice of Fort Worth, Brady Rice of Santa Anna and Flint and Dillon Rice, both of Arlington.

Pallbearers were Gary Gray, Alan Rice, Benny Rice, Flint Rice, Jim Rice and David Tucker.  Honorary pallbearers included Bridge Club Girls Billie, Sybil, Coyita, Tincy, Lois, Trudi, Thalia, Nancy and Sylvia.

Brenda Jo Gray, 39

Ms. Brenda Jo Gray, age 39, of Coleman passed away Friday, August 8, 2003 at her residence.  Graveside funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Sunday at the Coleman City Cemetery with Rev. John Stanislaw officiating.  Burial followed under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman.

Born December 12, 1963 in San Antonio, she had been a resident of Coleman for the past 18 years.  She was a factory worker and a Baptist.

Survivors include her mother, Mary Bowen Stanford and her sister, Karen and husband Bobby McGee, all of Coleman.

Dorothy Webb, 88

Dorothy Webb, age 88, of Burkett, died Friday, August 8, 2003 at a Bangs nursing home.  Graveside funeral service was held at 9:00 a. m. Sunday at the Burkett Cemetery Pavilion with Baker Rudolph officiating.  Services were under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Dorothy was born October 30, 1914 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to John Stone and Mae Henthorne Stone.  She grew up in Oklahoma and graduated from high school in Oklahoma City. She was married to O. W. (Bevo) Webb.  The Webb brothers bought a ranch in South Dakota on Orton Flat on the Cheyenne River and she and her husband lived there from the spring of 1949 to the fall of 1969 and they considered that the best time of their life.  They moved back to the Webb home place on the Pecan Bayou where she resided until her death.  Dorothy was a long-time member of the garden club in Cross Plains and was a Master Judge.  She also received an award for beautification from the State of Texas for planting wildflowers along FM 2806.  She was a charter member of the CowBelles and a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband O. W. (Bevo) Webb of Bangs, Texas; nephews, Wayne and wife Darlene Webb of Burkett, Tommy Ray and wife Polly Webb of Schertz, Texas, Robby Glen Webb and Bob Gallamore of Oklahoma; nieces, Jacqueline and husband Ray Mackey of Abilene and Darla Stubblefield of Bethany, Oklahoma; a sister-in-law, Zora Mae Bryant of Cross Plains, Texas; and several great-nephews and great-nieces.  Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Dorothy Lucille Worley, 81

Dorothy Lucille Worley, age 81, of Coleman, Texas (formerly of Odessa) passed away Friday, August 8, 2003 at 11:22 p.m. at Coleman County Medical Center.  Services will be today (Tuesday) at 9:00 a. m. at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel in Santa Anna with Rev. Lee Evans officiating.  Interment will follow at the Santa Anna Cemetery, directed by Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna.

Dorothy was born December 15, 1921 in Murrouge, Morehouse Parish, Louisiana to the late William Ollie and Verice Lucille Rea Cook.  She was reared in Louisiana, living in Fort Worth from 1942 -1944, then moving to Odessa where she resided until 1994 when she moved to Coleman County.  She graduated from Collinston High School in Louisiana in 1940 and married Lacy Worley on February 17, 1940 in Bastrop, Louisiana.  They celebrated 41 years of marriage and Lacy preceded her in death in 1981.  Dorothy was a member of the Baptist Church, a salesperson and a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, William B. Worley of Santa Anna and Ronnie Lynn Worley of Houston; a daughter, Phyllis Conner of Deming, New Mexico; three brothers, Douglas Cook of Spring, Kenneth Cook of Follen, Nevada and Willard Cook of Spring, Texas; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Worley, in 2003.

Pallbearers include Norman Anderson, Patrick Mendoza, John Morris, Mike Pritchard, Bill Worley and Buck Worley.

Alvin Lee Porter

Alvin Lee Porter, who was born and reared in Burkett, Texas, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2003 in Yukon, Oklahoma.  Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a. m. today (Tuesday) at the First United Methodist Church in Yukon, under the direction of Smith and Turner Mortuary, Yukon, Oklahoma.

Don was the son of the late Alvin Luther and Clara Opal Porter.  A resident of Yukon for 21 years, Don was employed at Phil-Good Products, Inc. and was a member of First United Methodist Church.  He served as president of Yukon Soccer Association, president of Frontier Country Soccer Association and also served on the parks and recreation board in Yukon.

Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline; sons Brian Wade, Bret Eric and Steve Porter; daughters Kathy Hinz and Nancy Hoyt; four grandchildren; and one greatgrandchild.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Roy.

Lydia Jo Burkett, 41

Lydia Jo Burkett, age 41, of Cross Plains, died Sunday, August 10, 2003 at her home in Cross Plains.  Funeral services were 2 p. m. Wednesday at Higginbotham Chapel with Ronnie White officiating.  Burial followed in the Burkett Cemetery with Higginbotham Funeral Home of Cross Plains in charge of arrangements.

She was born October 18, 1961 in Coleman, Texas to Jo Burkett and Sandra Lusk Burkett.

Survivors include her father, Jo Burkett of Burkett; mother Sandra Moore of Cross Plains; two brothers Mark Burkett of Midland and David Burkett of Austin; and two sisters, Elizabeth McCarty and Katherine McCarty Bass.

Tommie J. Connelly, 75

Tommie J. Connelly, age 75, of Burkett, died Monday, August 11, 2003 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.  Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a. m. Thursday, August 14, 2003, at First Baptist Church in Coleman with Rev. John Stanislaw officiating, assisted by Rick Marshall.  Burial will follow at the Burkett Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Tommie was born January 6, 1928 in Burkett, Texas and was the son of Winn and Ocie Edington Connelly.  He grew up in Burkett and attended school at Comal and graduated from Burkett High School.  On June 21, 1971 he married Charlyne Sovey in Waco, Texas.  Tommie was a life-long resident of the Burkett area and was a stock farmer.  He served on the board of the Farm Service Agency (formerly ASCS) for nine years, was currently serving as a director for Farm Bureau and the Coleman County Telephone Cooperative.  He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Coleman.

Survivors include his wife, Charlyne Connelly of Burkett; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy Mac and Paulette Connelly of Coleman and Chris and Cynthia Connelly of Burkett; five grandsons, Shea and wife Kari Connelly of Fort Worth, Casey Connelly of Coleman, Clint Connelly of Austin, Tommy Lance and wife Christine Connelly of Troy, Texas and Johnny Chance Connelly of Troy, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Cameron, Trista and Gage Connelly; sister-in-law, Edna Burkett of Andrews, Texas; three step-sisters, Dollie Sparkman and Theda Rhea Hazlewood, both of Coleman and Donna Bucy of Phoenix, Arizona; several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, J. C. Burkett.

Pallbearers: Shea Connelly, Casey Connelly, Clint Connelly, Lance Connelly, Chance Connelly, Rick Adams, Mike Glockzin and Sam Sovey.  Honorary pallbearers: Chester Sides, Gordon Conway, Jack Moore, Dr. Victor Hirsch and the Deacons of First Baptist Church.  Family visitation will be held from 5:00 p. m. until 7:00 p. m. Wednesday at Stevens Funeral Home.  Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society designated for cancer research.

Martha Pope Leech, 86

Martha Pope Leech, age 86, of El Campo, Texas died Monday, August 11, 2003.  Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Friday at the Coleman City Cemetery Pavilion, under the direction of Wheeler Funeral Home of El Campo.

Mrs. Leech was born February 27, 1917 in Coleman, a daughter of Dr. J. G. Pope and Virginia Joost Pope.  She married Camp Leech.  She was co-owner of Camp the Florist and a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and two sisters.  Memorials may be sent to the First United Methodist Church, 1001 Avenue I, El Campo, Texas 77437.

Annie Will Farris, 91

Annie Will Farris, age 91, of Coleman, died Thursday, August 14, 2003 at Abilene Regional Medical Center.  Funeral service were held at 2:30 p. m. Sunday, August 17, 2003 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Charles Sheffield officiating.  Burial followed at the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Annie Will was born April 24, 1912 at Van Court in Tom Green County, Texas and was the daughter of W. S. and Roxie Aner Barefoot Smith.  She grew up in Coleman County and graduated from Loss Creek High School.  On July 31, 1932 she married Bert G. Farris in Coleman and they celebrated 65 years of marriage. She was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors are one daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and James Burns of Abilene; one son, Bert Wayne Farris of Burkett; one sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Duane Smith of El Cajon, California; four granddaughters, Pamela Curoe of Abilene, Anita Monroe of Burkett, Vickie Owens of Coleman and Amy Griggs and husband Mitch of Sulphur Springs; one grandson Stanley Farris of Burkett; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; one aunt, Delinda Smith of Santa Anna; several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, five brothers and three sisters.

Dwight Zirkle, 50

Dwight Zirkle, age 50, of Shields, Texas passed away Friday, August 15, 2003 at 9:58 a. m. in Austin, Texas.  Services were Sunday at 2:30 p. m. at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Stanislaw officiating.  Interment followed at the Stewardson Cemetery directed by Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna.

Dwight was born on April 22, 1953 in Abilene, Texas to the late Davey Lee and Iris Virginia Lewellan Zirkle.  He was a 1972 graduate of McCaIlum High School in Austin where he resided until moving to Coleman County in 1981.  Dwight was an antique and collectibles dealer.

Survivors include: a brother and sister-in-law, Don Neil and Lisa Zirkle of Florence, Texas; two nephews, Dustin Zirkle of Denton, Texas and Jared Zirkle of Florence; aunt and uncle, Linda and Lin Dove of Austin, Texas; cousins - Burgess and Gayle Stewardson of Santa Anna, Texas.

Pallbearers were Leif Dove, Lane Guthrie, Judd Stewardson, Tyler Stewardson, Ward Stewardson and Danny Wheatley.

Dr. Don L. Smith , 66

Dr. Don L. Smith entered the Church Triumphant on August 16, 2003 after a courageous year-long battle with cancer.  Services were held at 3 p. m. Monday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Coleman under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home with interment at Silver Valley Cemetery.

Dr. Smith was born on February 6, 1937, in Chaves County, New Mexico to Tom and Adelia Smith.  Dr. Smith attended grade school at Echo and Coleman, graduated high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico and then went on to serve in the U.S. Navy.  He holds a B. A. degree from Hardin-Simmons University (1962), an M. A. degree from Mississippi State University (1964) and a Ph. D from Texas Tech University (1971).  As a state certified general appraiser, he did much of the land appraisal for O.H. Ivie Reservoir.  As a Christian, Dr. Smith was a dedicated member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Coleman and served in numerous church leadership positions.  Dr. Smith devoted his life to teaching and challenging his students to reach their full potential.  His students and colleagues attest to the positive influence and difference that he made in their lives, during his 25-year tenure as a Professor of Political Science at Howard Payne University.  In addition to teaching his classes, Dr. Smith served as the coach of HPU’s award-winning Moot Court Team.  In 2000, he was chosen as the Outstanding Faculty Member at Howard Payne and in 2003 was appointed the J. D. Sanderfer Chair of Political Science.  To honor his service and dedication, the Douglas MacArthur Academy Board of Directors and the Howard Payne University Board of Trustees established the Dr. Don L. Smith Academy Scholarship earlier this year.

He is survived by his wife Mary Emma of Brownwood; his daughter, Adelia, of Dallas, and his son, Kent of Brownwood. He is also survived by a brother, James D. Smith and wife Linda of Waco; his cousin, Carlie Justice and husband Pat, as well as four nieces, two nephews and numerous cousins, friends, and former students. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Margaret; and a son, Beau.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Coleman and the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom at Howard Payne University.  Pallbearers were Henry Dodson, Jack Home, Anthony Strawn, Justin Murphy, John Earnshaw, Mac Rust. Honorary pallbearers included Pat Justice and Wayne Forbess.

Donald Lawrence Montague, 73

Funeral services for Donald Lawrence Montague, 73, of Brownwood, formerly of Coleman, were held at 10 a. m. Tuesday at Davis - Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Brownwood with Rev. Jeff Robinett officiating.  Mr. Montague was cremated after the memorial service.  His remains will be placed in a cemetery in Manzanillo, Mexico.  Mr. Montague died Saturday, August 16, 2003 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 8, 1930 in San Mateo, California, the son of the late Walter Montague and Caroline Beckwith Montague.  He married Connie Adame in 1977 in Reno, Nevada.  Montague was a retired Credit Manager and Business Administrator and served in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Connie A. Montague of Queretara, Mexico; daughter, Dianne Brewer and her husband, Daniel of Fort Worth; and one son, Douglas Montague of Brownwood.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jay Gardner, 72

Jay Gardner, age 72 of Tyler, Texas passed away August 16, 2003 in Tyler.  Graveside services will be held today (Thursday) at 10:30 a. m. at the Coleman City Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley (Mankins) Gardner of Tyler; one son and one daughter, both of Tyler; and three grandchildren.  Local survivors are his mother-inlaw, Jessie Mankins; brother-in-law, Gaylon Mankins; and sister-in-law, June Thompson.

Vicki Sue Spoon Tutchings, 56

Memorial services for Vicki Sue Spoon Tutchings, age 56, of Henderson (formerly of Coleman) will be held at St. Matthews Episcopal Church tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6:00 p. m. with Father Bill Russell officiating.  Mrs. Tutchings died Monday, August 18, 2003 in Tyler, Texas.   Arrangements are under the direction of Crawford-Crim-Bryan Funeral Home at Henderson, Texas.

She was born March 8, 1947 in Tyler, Texas.  She was an Episcopalian and retired school teacher.  She was a member of Parents Anonymous, Children Advocacy Center, attended Coleman High School, Abilene Cooper High School, Odessa High School, Lamar University, SFA, North Texas and UT-Tyler.

Survivors include her husband, George Tutchings of Henderson; a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Brenda Tutchings of Ottawa Ontario, Canada; a brother and sister-in-law, Rick and Sharon Spoon of Henderson; nephew Corey Spoon of Henderson; niece, Casi Dickerson and husband Sean of Henderson; niece Courtney Spoon of Henderson; and great nieces, Molli and Maggi Dickerson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Vicki Tutchings Memorial Scholarship at Citizens National Bank, 201 W. Main Henderson, Texas 75652 or Hospice of East Texas, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, Texas 75701.

Willie Mae Throgmorton, 90

Mrs. Willie Mae Throgmorton, age 90, passed away August 19, 2003 in McKinney where she had been living since 1992.  Funeral services will be graveside today (Thursday) at 10:30 a. m. at the Gouldbusk Cemetery with the Rev. Odell Allen (a nephew) officiating and burial to follow under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman.

She was born December 12, 1912 in Gouldbusk where she also attended school.  Willie Mae spent most of her life in Coleman County.  On March 3, 1932 she married Jess Throgmorton in Gouldbusk.  He preceded her in death in 1987.  Willie Mae and husband Jess both taught school in Coleman County for many years before she retired.  She was a member of the Concho Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Throgmorton of Austin; three sons, Harry of Seattle, Washington, Arthur of Piano and Jesse of Austin.  The family will receive friends for viewing Mrs. Throgmorton at the funeral home today (Thursday) from 9 to 10 a. m. at which time the casket will be closed and all may go in procession to the cemetery.

Bobby Wayne Whitfield, 45

Bobby Wayne Whitfield, age 45, of Coleman passed away August 23, 2003 at Coleman County Medical Center.  Funeral services were graveside Monday at 2 p .m. at the Coleman City Cemetery with Dr. Charles Sheffield officiating and burial following under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman.

A lifetime Coleman County resident, he was born September 18, 1957 in Coleman, where he also attended school, worked for the City of Coleman, and was a member of the Community Baptist Church. He was the son of Bobbie Kirby of Coleman and the late Jerry Wayne Whitfield.

He is survived by his mother Bobbie Kirby of Coleman; one daughter, Lashoma WhitfieId, of Arlington; one son, Russell Luke Whitfield, of Arlington; one sister, Lisa Weathers, of San Angelo; and one brother, Jerry WhitfieId, of Coleman.  One son, Bobby Wayne Whitfield, Jr., preceded him in death.

Jose Vasquez, 60

Jose Vasquez, 60, of Abilene, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2003 at his residence.  Services were held at 10 a. m. Wednesday at the Community Memorial Funeral Chapel with Homero Espuivel officiating.  Burial followed in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, under the direction of Community Funeral Home of Abilene.

Jose was born November 22, 1942 in Coleman County, Texas to the late Adolfo and Martina (Martinez) Vasquez.  He married Reinalda Vasquez on June 12, 1964 in Ballinger, Texas and they were married 39 years.  He had lived in Abilene the last 29 years, and worked for the City of Abilene in the Street Department as a heavy equipment operator for 28 years.  He was a Jehovah’s Witness.

Survivors include his wife, Reinalda, of Abilene; a son, George Vasquez and his wife Rhonda, of Snyder; a daughter, Elida Ana Vasquez of Abilene; a sister, Sophia Ramirez of Abilene; a granddaughter, Samantha Vasquez and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Alvino Vasquez; and two sisters, Victoria Luna and Concha Guerrero.

Cullen Perry, 89

Funeral services for Cullen Nelson Perry, 89, of Brownwood (former Santa Anna resident and SAISD principal and superintendent) will be at 10:00 a. m. today (Thursday) in the Davis - Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Brownwood with Dr. Gary Torian officiating.  Interment will follow in the Bangs Cemetery.  Mr. Perry passed away Monday, August 25, 2003 in a Brownwood nursing facility.

He was born on October 18, 1913 in Indian Creek to Fred and Ola Perry.  Cullen attended Bangs schools and graduated from Daniel Baker College in the class of 1937.  He earned his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Texas at Austin.  He married Martha Weller on June 10, 1941 in Brownwood.  Cullen proudly served his country in World War II in the U. S. Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater.  He worked for the Santa Anna Independent School District first as a principal and later as the superintendent for 28 years.  He later served on the board of the Region 15 Education Service Center.  Cullen was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church and the Friendly Fellows Sunday School Class.  He was also a member of the Santa Anna Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, CulIen Nelson Perry, Jr. and wife Bobbie of Denton and Charles Nolan Perry of Houston; two sisters, Fletcher Lancaster of Brownwood and Louise Bartshe of Douglas, Wyoming; one brother, J. Fred Perry of Brownwood; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dee Perry.

Jane Beard, 82

Jane Beard, age 82 of Coleman, Texas passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2003 at 5:10 p. m. at the Angelo Community Hospital in San Angelo.  Services will be Friday at 10:30 a. m. at Community Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Smith and Rev. Raymond Jones officiating.  Interment will follow at the Santa Anna Cemetery directed by Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman.  Family visitation will be today (Thursday) from 6:00 until 7:30 p. m. at Henderson Funeral Home.

Jane was born November 21, 1920 in Coleman County to the late Sam and Mary Jane Flores McCrary.  She was reared in Coleman County where she was a 1938 graduate of the Buffalo schools.  Jane married Ernest Vernon Campbell on August 4, 1942 and they celebrated 21 years of marriage.  Ernest preceded her in death in 1964.  On April 6, 1970 she married W. R. Ray Beard in Santa Anna and they have celebrated 33 years of marriage.  Jane was a member of the Community Baptist Church and a beautician and homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Ray Beard of Coleman, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Carole and Steve Voss of San Angelo; daughter-in-law, Wanda Campbell of Santa Anna; sister, Jettie Wood of Gun Barrel City, Texas; brother, Luther McCrary of Santa Anna; three grandsons, Gary Voss of San Angelo, Paul Voss of Edmond, Oklahoma and Donnie Campbell of Santa Anna; two great-granddaughters and a number of nieces and nephews.  Jane was preceded in death by her son, James V. ‘Buddy’ Campbell in 1973 and stepson Billy Campbell in 1991.

Pallbearers will be Mike Curry, Jackie Hammonds, Rick Brinson, Bob Lumpkin, Tom Mann and Berry Phillips.  Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Beal, Dub Benson, Joe Johnson, Thelbert Elkins, Don Harmes and Glenn Thomas.

Clarence Jacobs, 75

Master Sergeant Clarence (Sonny) Jacobs (Ret.) of Santa Anna passed away August 30, 2003 at Coleman Healthcare Center.  Memorial services with Military Honors were Saturday, September 6, 2003 at 4:00 p. m. at the Lazy J Ranch north of Santa Anna with Rev. Bruce Hess officiating.  Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman was in charge of arrangements.

Clarence was born April 1, 1928 in Sonora, Texas to the late Samuel David and Sadie Velma Waldrop Jacobs.  He graduated from the United States Armed Forces Institute and attended the University of Illinois and the University of Oklahoma.  Clarence was a decorated soldier in four wars.  He was an army veteran of WWII, two Tours of Duty in Korea and Vietnam and also in the peacekeeping effort in the Panama Conflict.  After serving his country for 22 years, he received an honorable discharge from the U. S. Army.  He has been a resident of Santa Anna since 1987.

Survivors include one daughter, Maritza Jacobs of Quathiaski Cove, British Columbia, Canada; one son, Louis Jacobs of Quathiaski Cove, British Columbia, Canada; one granddaughter, Wanita Everly of Quathiaski Cove, British Columbia, Canada; four sisters, Mozelle Walbert of Somerville, Wanna Cox of Lake Jackson, Ann Nentwig of Irving, and Pat Winkelmann of Brazoria; three brothers, L. B. Jacobs of Huntsville, Francis Jacobs of Beaumont and Sammy Jacobs of Santa Anna; a number of nieces and nephews. Clarence was preceded in death by three brothers, Johnnie, Bill and Richard Jacobs; and one sister, Mildred Mann.

She was born January 14, 1912 in Whon, Texas to Zack and Mary Bible.  She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, O. C. Bible and her husband, Willie Branch, Sr.
