Paula Griffin Justice, age 59, of Abilene and formerly of Coleman, died Sunday, November 3, 2002 at her residence.  Funeral services will be 2:00 p. m. today (Tuesday) at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Justice was born March 6, 1943 in Coleman, a daughter of Paul and Helen Smith Griffin.  She was reared in Coleman where she attended the Coleman schools.  She married Johnny Justice on January 11, 1975 in Coleman.  He preceded her in death on February 10, 1992.  She moved to Abilene in 2000 from Coleman and had lived in Midland for several years.  She was a homemaker and a member of Tall City Baptist Church in Midland.

Survivors include two daughters, Jacque Gordon and husband David of Midland, Jeri Williams of Abilene; one son, Jay Jones and wife Angela of Olden, Texas; one sister, Linda Haragan of Plains; ten grandchildren, Andrea Sanders of Midland, Heather and Heath Rhodes of Abilene, Andrea, Jay Wesley and John Jones of Olden, Texas, Kendra, Mathew and Kirsten Gordon of Midland, Austin Clayton of Midland; three great-grandchildren, Tyler Mays of Midland and Brenton and Jayden Hunter of Abilene; one nephew, Lance Haragan of Fort Worth; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Lucy Laura Wilson expired on November 3, 2002 in Ballinger, Texas.  Services for Lucy Laura Casey Wilson will be Wednesday, November 6 at 2:00 p. m. at the First United Methodist Church in Ballinger with Rev. Bill Hughes officiating.  Interment in Rough Creek Cemetery in Novice, Texas will follow.

Lucy, born June 25, 1918 in Novice, Texas was the daughter of John and Lucy Casey.  Lucy began her fifty-five year marriage to Harlon H. (Shorty) Wilson on December 8, 1943.  Lucy was a charter member of Trinity Methodist Church in Coleman.  She spent sixty-three years as a Sunday School Teacher and student of the Bible.  She taught and led children’s choirs in many Methodist churches in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Texas.  She was active in every church she attended and made lifelong friends in each, ending her service as teacher of the Philathea Class, First Methodist Ballinger in 1998.  Lucy worked as a homemaker and dispatcher for the Coleman County Electric Co-op.  She was a tireless supporter of her children, Bobby and Martha, as a leader of Cub Scouts, Brownies, Band Boosters and the myriad of other activities they encountered.  Lucy never shirked her duty.  Her great Southern hospitality was legendary as she lived by the Golden Rule and John 21:15-18.

Lucy is survived by Bobby, Peggy, Christopher and Elizabeth Wilson; Dr. Andrew and Elizabeth, Lydia and Lila Schaffer; Martha, Daniel, Anthony and Jennifer Beimer Melissa, Shawn, Emily and Rachel Wade; a host of friends, relatives and the wonderful and caring staff of Heritage Oaks Estates.

Pallbearers will be a group of friends whom Lucy admired and appreciated, with the Philathea Class serving as honorary pallbearers.

Rolan Deal, age 74 of Rockwood, Texas passed away Monday, November 4, 2002 in Rockwood.  Memorial services will be held 11:00 a. m. Saturday at Rockwood Baptist Church with Rev. Raymond Jones officiating under direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna.

Rolan was born June 10, 1928 in Rockwood to Johnie Lee Ellis Deal and the late Richard Joel Deal.  He was reared in Rockwood where he attended school and graduated from Santa Anna High School in 1945.  He was an Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict, a Mason, member of Rockwood Baptist Church, stockfarmer and lifetime resident of Rockwood.

Survivors include mother, Johnie Deal of Rockwood; two daughters, Tonya Robinson of College Station and Cindy McDonald of Mesquite; two sons, Randy Deal and Ronnie Deal both of Abilene; one sister, Dixie Perry of Denham Springs, Louisiana; two brothers, Gene Deal of Weatherford and Johnny Deal of Bangs; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by daughter, Elxia Jean Deal in 1954.

Jean Doyle Larson, age 79, of Coleman, died Tuesday (November 5, 2002) at Coleman County Medical Center.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Saturday (November 9, 2002) at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church with The Rev. Joan Rudolph officiating.  Burial will follow in Coleman Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mr. Larson was born February 28, 1923 in Dallas, Texas and was the son of Ralph E. Larson and Georgia Mac Wilson Larson. He moved to Coleman as a small child and graduated from Coleman High School. He attended Texas A & M and served in the U. S. Army during World War II in the Southeast Asia Command.  Mr. Larson married Grace Williamson on August 18, 1943 in New York City.  She preceded him in death on January 8, 2002.  He was chief engineer at KSTA radio station in Coleman for 30 years and later was the owner of Larson Electronics.  He was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

Survivors include one son, Jan Harris Larson of Coleman; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.  Memorials may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 609 S. Neches, Coleman, Texas 76834.

Hairl F. “PaPa” Lawson, age 74, of Lake Coleman, Texas died Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at his residence.  Funeral services were held at 4:00 p. m. Saturday in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Charles Sheffield officiating.  Burial followed in the Coleman Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mr. Lawson was born October 20, 1928 in Seminole, Oklahoma and was a son of Walter Jackson Lawson and Jewel Irene Whitecotton Lawson.  He grew up and attended school in Oklahoma.  He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War.  On December 2,1952 he married Wanda V. Rimer in Arlington, New Mexico and she preceded him in death on May 5, 2002.  He lived in Crane in the early 1950’s, Odessa for 30 years and in Saudi Arabia for 13 years where he was a consultant for ARAMCO.  He moved to Lake Coleman in 1978 and at the time of his death was the owner of Concho Car Wash. He was Baptist.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda Mahan of Weinert, Texas, Pamela Maples of Odessa, Texas and Vickie Hodges of Lake Coleman, Texas; one brother, Leroy Lawson of Boerne, Texas; eight sisters, Helen Ward and Edith Wiegert, both of Harrah, Oklahoma, Rosie Wiegert and Mary Lou Canada, both of Oklahoma, Ellen Jilge of Wellston, Oklahoma, Jackie Hazel of California, Annie Ratcliffe of Illinois and Alice Davis of Wellston, Oklahoma; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one sister, Glayds Lawson; and a granddaughter, Lendra Mae Hodges.

Pallbearers were Leonard Mahan, Donald Mahan, Bryan West, Gary West, John Robert Hodges and Ben E. Maples.  Honorary pallbearer was Bryan Shultz.  Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Big Country, 4601 Hartford, Abilene, Texas 79605.

Funeral services for Ernestine Thames-Blacklock, age 84, of Austin and formerly of Santa Anna were held November 9, 2002 at the Cook-Walden Memorial Hill Cemetery in Pflugerville.  She died November 6, 2002.

Mrs. Blacklock was born December 15, 1917 in Santa Anna, Texas to the late H. H. and Georgia Overby Thames.  She was a member of the Baptist Church.  A 1935 graduate of Santa Anna High School she excelled at the University of Texas earning her Alpha Lambda Delta honors, introduction into the Sidney Lanier Literacy Society and one of the first few Business Administration degrees awarded to a woman in the State.  She was married to the late Col. Ward T. Blacklock, Sr. at Camp Bowie, Brownwood, Texas on December 21, 1940 and they celebrated 60 years of marriage.  During their Army career Mrs. Blacklock served as a Red Cross Volunteer and a member of the Army Wives Club . They were stationed in Hawaii, Japan, Pennsylvania, California, Virginia and Texas.  Upon Col. Blacklock’s retirement, they returned to Austin where Mrs. Blacklock worked in the University of Texas Library system until retirement.  She was a member of the Austin Women’s Club and Save the Children Foundation.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ward I. Blacklock, Jr., June 17, 1998.  She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Plummer-Blacklock; three grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and several cousins.

Lee Etta Busby Masters, age 60, of Coleman, loving mother of Dana and Nanny of Zoe and Zeke, passed away suddenly on Thursday, November 7, 2002 in San Angelo.  Funeral services were 2:00 p. m. Sunday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Joe Hailey officiating.

Lee Etta was born August 11, 1942 in Coleman, Texas and was the daughter of Carl J. Busby and Leola Forbess Busby.  She grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1960.  She later graduated from business college.  She was a systems technician for GTE (now Verizon) for 34 years, retiring in 1998.  She was a member of Elm Street Church of Christ.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Dana and Doug Adams of Coleman; one granddaughter, Zoe Paul of Coleman; one grandson, Zeke Adams of Coleman; two brothers, Ronnie Busby of Coleman and Dennis Busby of San Angelo; two nephews, Doug Busby of Abilene and Aaron Busby of San Angelo; two nieces, Alexis and Amber Busby of San Angelo; aunt and uncle, Elmer and Mildred Rodgers of Coleman; great nephew, Austin Honeycutt of San Antonio; and numerous cousins.

Memorials may be made to the Coleman Public Library, 400 Commercial, Coleman, Texas 76834.  She will be greatly missed - she was our rock.  She loved her flowers and yard and enjoyed her grandchildren immensely.

Walter C. Hester, age 86, of Coleman died Friday, November 8, 2002 at Coleman Healthcare Center.  Funeral services were 4:00 p. m. Sunday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Joe Hailey officiating.  Burial followed at Brown Ranch Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mr. Hester was born October 7, 1916 in Miles, Texas and was a son of Ed Lee Hester and Jonie Ash Hester.  He grew up in Grosvenor and Abilene and attended school in Grosvenor.  He lived in Angleton, Texas for 55 years where he was employed at Dow Chemical.  He moved to Coleman in April 2002.  He was married to Madie Morgan on February 15, 1975 in Coleman.  He was a member of the Angleton Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Madie Hester of Coleman; children, Charlene Ware of Houston, Rita Conley and Carrol Rae, both of Angleton, Cloyd Hester of Brazoria, Rickey Smith of Kermit and Larry Smith of Santa Anna; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Edwin Hester of Houston; one sister, Gladyne Potter of Fort Worth; his best friend, Tip; numerous nieces and nephews.

BROWNWOOD:  James (Jimmy) Randolph, Jr. was born January 9, 1958 in Temple, Texas.  He passed away on Friday, November 8, 2002.  Memorial services were held at 7:00 p. m. Monday at the Brownwood Depot at the corner of Adams and Depot Streets.  Funeral services will be held this morning (Tuesday) at 10:00 a. m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brownwood with interment at 4:00 p. m. Tuesday in Greenwood Cemetery in Fort Worth, Texas.

Jimmy Randolph lived his life as we all hope to.  Jimmy expressed his love of his mother, father, wife and daughters by giving of himself.  Jimmy’s deep-seated faith enabled him to share the abundance of his blessings with all of those around him.  Jimmy was a small-town guy who chose Brownwood, Texas as a place to hang his hat.  A car dealer extraordinaire, he embraced the community and took pride in contributing to its many needs.  He was a member of the Temple High School Key Club and other lesser organizations such as the Brownwood Country Club and Card Group and Founding Father of HATFEST.

He is survived by his wife Jean Lee Kostohryz Randolph of Brownwood; five daughters, Carolyn Joyce, Martha Jean, Charlotte Ann, Helen Elizabeth and Grace Marie.  He is also survived by his mother, Carolyn Faye Wilder Randolph; his brother Mark Randolph and a sister Caryn Randolph.  He is also survived by his special friends, Sally, Barnie, Mr. Meanie, Mimi-Meanie and Girlie.  He was preceded in death by his father, James Alfred Randolph, Sr.

Annie Marie Elkins, age 86, of Coleman, died Saturday, November 9, 2002 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home.  Funeral service was held at 2 p. m. Monday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Northway officiating.  Burial followed at the Coleman Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Elkins was born December 6, 1915 in Mason, Texas and was a daughter of Ernest Lamar Harrell and Florence Thompson Harrell.  She moved to Concho County as a small child and then to Coleman County where she attended school at Loss Creek.  On September 12, 1933 she married Stanley Davis Phillips and he preceded her in death on January 12, 1945.  She married Wilbur Elkins on February 2,1946 in Valera. She worked at Jinright Manufacturing for 26 years and was also a homemaker.  She was a member of Bible Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Wilbur Elkins of Coleman; one son and daughter-in-law, Garland and Elaine Phillips of Austin; one daughter and son-in-law, Melba and Don Marrs of Houston; four grandchildren, Cindy Kindschuh and Karen Firenza, both of Houston, Alan Phillips and Byron Phillips both of Austin; eight great-grandchildren, Maggi Kindschuh, Alex Kindschuh, Kristin Firenza, Matthew Firenza, Amanda Firenza, Kristin Phillips, Cody Phillips and Tanner Beau Phillips; numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Phillips in 1936; four brothers, Buck Harrell, Raymond Harrell, Otto Harrell and Ervin Harrell; and four sisters, LilIie Cullins, Mamie Phillips, Edna Cullins and Gracie Durham.

Maggie Mae Pillion, 82, of Abilene, died Saturday, November 9, 2002 at an Abilene care center.  Graveside services were 10:30 a. m. Monday in Shep Cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Jones officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, Abilene.

She was born to George and Betty Graves Watkins on November 11, 1919, in San Saba, Texas.  Since 1940, she had lived in the communities of Shep and Abilene,  She married Troy Pillion in Taylor County on April 15, 1944.  Mrs. Pillion was a homemaker and a member of Wingate Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Troy Pillion; a son, Monte Pillion; two brothers, Evan Watkins and Odis Watkins; and a sister, Opal Hill.  Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Sharon Pillion of Abilene; three grandchildren, Jason Pillion and wife, Lori, of The Woodlands and Rebekah Pillion and Meredith Pillion, both of Abilene; a sister, Emma Webb of Coleman; and a sister-in-law, Bessie Watkins of Odessa.

Jean Trinkner, age 79, of Abilene passed away Saturday, November 9, 2002 at an Abilene hospital.  Funeral services were 2 p. m. Monday at Community Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Abilene with Steve Joiner officiating.  Graveside services followed at 3:30 p.m. at the Cross Plains Cemetery.

Mrs. Trinkner was born May 23, 1923 in Oklahoma to the late Levi and Ethel (Thompson) Tankersley.  She grew up and graduated from school in Burkett, Texas.  She had lived in Abilene since 1963, moving there from Cross Plains.  She married Henry C. Trinkner in 1971 in Abilene and he preceded her in death December 22,1993.  She was retired from the Abilene State School and was a homemaker.  She was a member of Holy Faith Catholic Church.

She is survived by four sons, Junior Ford, Jr. of Abilene, Tom Trinkner and wife, Pat of Abilene, Tony Trinkner and wife, Sherrey of Florida and Charlie Trinkner and wife, Treva of Cleburne; six daughters, Carol June Rogers of Palm Springs, California, Carol Jean Bennett and husband, Larry of Rockwall, Pat Albus and husband, Butch of Tuscola, Nancy Sisco of Abilene, Cathy Acosta of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Sharon Davis and husband, Allen of Grand Prairie; a sister, Margaret Cobb of Amarillo; 25 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend of the family, Roland Marcee of Abilene.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers; one sister; a grandson, Jamie Ryan Gregston; and a daughter, Patricia Nicole Ziegler.

George Gipson “Gip” Shewmaker, age 89, of Coleman died Sunday, November 10, 2002 at Coleman County Medical Center.  Funeral services were held at 10:00 a. m. Wednesday in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with David Wallace officiating.  Burial followed in the Burkett Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

“Gip” Shewmaker was born August 10, 1913 in Pioneer, Texas and grew up in the Burkett area where he also attended school.  On December 23, 1939 he married Virginia Estelle Gould in Coleman.  He lived in Texarkana, Texas for 46 years and was a Senior Sanitarian with Texas Public Health.  He moved to Coleman in 1999.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Shewmaker of Coleman; two children, Pat Thompson and husband Stan of Erie, Colorado and Michael Shewmaker, Sr. and wife Jodi of Texarkana, Texas; grandchildren, Michael George Shewmaker, Jr., Patrick Shewmaker, Rachael Shewmaker and Mark Hodges (and wife Lori); four great-grandchildren, Kayla, Klarissa, Kelsey and Kolton Hodges; two sisters, Mattie Laura Spalding of Brownwood and Jessie Chick of Texarkana; brothers, Horace Crutchfield of Cross Plains and Tom Crutchfield of Abilene. He was preceded in death by three brothers Travis, Henry and Harvey Crutchfield.

"Gip" Shewmaker

Archie Fenton, age 74, of Gouldbusk died Sunday, November 10, 2002 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.  Graveside funeral services were held at 4 p. m. Monday at Gouldbusk Cemetery with Sam Wilson officiating.  Services were under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Archie Fenton was born February 21, 1928 in Gouldbusk, Texas and was a son of W. F. Fenton II and Lucille Elliott Fenton.  He grew up in Gouldbusk and attended school at Mozelle.  He was married to Anna Knighten Fenton for 36 years.  He served in the U.S. Army.  He was a rancher and had lived in Texas and Colorado.

Survivors include his three children, Angela Fenton Dillon and husband David of Florence, Colorado, Bobby Fenton and wife Delores of Johnson City and Janet Bolton and husband Dan of Brownwood; seven grandchildren, Ethan, Danette, Chad, Joshua, Missy, Becky and Sonya; four great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Tooter and Charlotte Fenton of Lake Ivie; one sister and brother-in-law, Sue and J. D. Townsend of Merkel; and several nieces and nephews.

Tommy McCulloch, age 70 of Coleman died Monday, November 11, 2002 at Coleman County Medical Center.  Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p. m. Wednesday in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Sam Wilson officiating.  Burial will follow in the Coleman Cemetery.

Tommy was born August, 1932 in Coleman Texas and was a son of B. W. McCulloch and Neva Ruth Minatra McCulloch.  He grew up in Coleman and attended school here.  He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.  On May 28, 1955 he married Doris Seals.  He was a retired oil field pumper and a member of the Oddfellows.

Survivors include his wife, Doris of Coleman; three sons, Rick and wife Mary Ann McCulloch, Nick and wife Tamie McCulloch, Mick and wife Joyce McCulloch; four granddaughters, Sonya and husband Johnny Costanza, Meagan McCulloch Caroline McCulloch and Kristen Pool; sisters, Ovida Frick, Overa Rufle and Peggy Baker; two brothers, B.W. McCulloch and Max and wife Laverne McCulloch.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Leeah McCulloch.

Garland Garner, age 57, of Coleman died Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at Coleman County Medical Center.  Funeral services were 4 p. m. Friday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Daniel Bodine officiating.  The body was cremated.

Garland was born January 26, 1945 in Brady, Texas, a son of Jim Garner and Gladys Webb Garner.  He was reared and attended school in Coleman. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.  He married Jan Bodine on April 9,1971 in Coleman.  He was a welder and worked in the oil field.  He was a member of the Community Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jan Garner of Coleman; four sons, Greg Garner of Washington, Richard Garner of Abilene, Burton Garner and Monte Garner, both of Coleman; one daughter, Dana Adams of Coleman; two sisters, Avell Tedder of Farmers Branch, Texas and Sandra Wise of Trinity, Texas; two brothers, Darrell Garner of Florida and Larry Garner of Luling, Texas; six grandchildren and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jimmy Garner and Bill Garner.

Honorary pallbearers were J. W. Fulbright, Calvin Merryman, Tooter Baynes, Ronald Alvey, Donald Jackson and Danny K. Densman.

Sue Hemphill, age 72, of Coleman died Thursday, November 14, 2002 at her home.  Funeral services were held at 2:00 p. m. Sunday at First Baptist Church with Rev. John Stanislaw officiating, assisted by Dr. James Shields.  Burial followed in the Coleman Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Sue Hemphill was born June 8, 1930 in Leaday and was a daughter of the late Olan “Bud” Wilson and Grace Thommason Wilson.  She grew up in Leaday and attended school at Mozelle.  She also attended Hardin-Simmons University and Texas Tech University.  She was the 1951 Coleman Rodeo Queen.  On February 16, 1952, she married Jimmy Hemphill in Leaday.  Sue was employed at Coleman County Electric Co-op for 20 years.  She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Lydia Sunday School Class.

Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Hemphill of Coleman; two daughters, Sandra Edington of Coleman and Jamie and husband Jim Pool of Stephenville; one son, Charlie Hemphill of Amarillo; four grandchildren, Jim Bob and wife Elizabeth Edington of Stephenville, Trey Pool of Stephenville, Hayes Edington of Coleman and Taylor Pool of Stephenville; one greatgrandson, Jeffery Edington of Stephenville; one brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Mona Wilson of Gouldbusk; and one sister, Doreece Ford.

Pallbearers were Jim Bob Edington, Trey Pool, Hayes Edington Taylor Pool, David Watson, Joe Pat Hemphill, Barney Ransberger and Hilton Hemphill.  Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Big Country, 4601 Hartford, Abilene, Texas 79605.

Baily Ray Pearce-Anderson, infant daughter of Tamara Pearce and Jonathon Anderson of Coleman, passed away November 17, 2002 at 4:15 a. m. at the Coleman County Medical Center.  The body will be transported back to Shreveport, Louisiana for burial.  Arrangements are by Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman.

Funeral services for Harriette Graves of Brownwood were held at 2 p. m. Wednesday at Union Presbyterian Church, Brownwood, with Dr. Norbert Peil, Dr. William LaBarr and Gene Deason officiating.  Burial followed in Greenleaf Cemetery.

Mrs. Graves died November 17, 2002 in a Dallas hospital following a brief illness.  Mrs. Graves had a 33 year career as a reporter and feature writer for the Brownwood Bulletin.  The former Harriette Aronsohn was born in New York City.  She shared many of her New York memories with readers of her Bulletin column.  One of the high points of her youth was becoming the reigning roller skating champion of Central Park.  As a young woman working for the Camp Fire Girls organization in New York, Mrs. Graves wrote and produced her first operetta.  She volunteered as a Navy Wave following the outbreak of World War II.  While in the Navy, one of her poems gained sufficient attention to earn her a job on the base newspaper. It was Mrs. Graves’ first experience with journalism.  She met the late Roland L. Graves at a dance for service personnel.  The girl from New York City and the boy from Brownwood were married in Waterloo, Iowa, on March 11, 1943.  After the war, they established their home in Brownwood, where they reared their family and Mrs. Graves began to establish her place in the community.  In the early years, she wrote operettas for her childrens’ school.  She also worked as a freelance writer, composing radio advertising jingles and newspaper features.  It was the realization of a long-held dream when she joined the Bulletin as a staff writer on April 1, 1966.  Mrs. Graves won numerous awards for both writing and photography, including several from the Associated Press and the Mark Francis Award of the state veterinary society.  Mrs. Graves was a 55-year member of Union Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by four children and their spouses: Judy and Lyndon Brownlee, Roland and Martha Graves of Brownwood, Regina and Cliff Brite of Coleman and Drs. Joan and William La Barr of Carrolton.  Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Gary Lynn Brownlee and his wife, Stacia, of Brownwood; Cheramie Jordan and her husband, Jeff, of Daphne, Ala. Richie Whitworth and his wife, Nicole, of San Angelo; Damien Gray of Lewisville; Sara Tischler and her husband, Jason, of Dallas; Taylor and Karlton Graves of Brownwood; and two great-grandchildren, Noah Whitworth and Austin Jordan.  Other survivors include her brother, Harry Aronsohn of New York City and brother-in-law, Raymond Graves of Brownwood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland.

Louise C. Moore, age 89 of San Antonio, formerly of Santa Anna, passed away Monday, November 18, 2002 at 9:17 a. m. at the Chandler House in San Antonio.  Graveside services will be Friday at 11:00 a. m. at the Santa Anna Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Jones officiating under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna. Family visitation will be today (Thursday) from 5:30 till 7:00 p. m. at Henderson Funeral Home.

Louise was born on December 31, 1912 in Ottawa, Illinois to the late John A. and Laura Arthur Graham.  She was reared in Washington, Iowa where she graduated from Washington High School. Louise married Doug Moore in Washington, Iowa on May 2,1931 and they celebrated 52 years of marriage.  Doug preceded her in death in 1985.  Louise was a homemaker, Star Mail Route Carrier and co-owned and operated with her husband the Moore Mercantile Store from 1953 till 1970.  She was a member of the First Christian of Santa Anna.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Ropp of San Antonio, Texas; one son, Doug Moore, Jr. of Germany and Marble Falls, Texas; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  Louise was preceded in death by her granddaughter Alice Gilbert Rode in 1984.

Coleen Donica age 54, of Coleman died Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at her residence.  Graveside funeral service will be held at 4:00 p. m. today (Thursday) at Coleman Cemetery Pavilion with Rev. John Stanislaw officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Coleen was born on September 6, 1948 in Coleman, Texas and was a daughter of Velma HoIIon Gilder and the late Samuel Eugene Gilder.  She grew up in Coleman where she attended school.  She graduated from Cosmetology School in Brownwood and owned French Beauty Shop.  Coleen married Ronnie J. Donica, Sr. on February 4, 1988 in Coleman.  She was also the co-owner of Coonie’s Barbecue Restaurant.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ronnie J. Donica, Sr. of Coleman; her mother, Velma Gilder of Coleman; four sons, Michael Wayne Fikes, Darrell Dwain Fikes, Cody Darian Fikes and Travis Wiley Eugene Donica, all of Coleman; two step-daughters, Tammy Lee Casey (and husband John) of Coleman and Stephanie René Donica of Coleman; two step-sons, Ronnie J. Donica, Jr. of Brownwood and David Lynn Donica of Allen, Texas; one brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Pat Gilder of Coleman; one sister and brother-in-law, Patsy Carol and Johnnie Neal of Coleman; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ollie Marie Smith, age 89, of Coleman, passed away at 9:16 p. m. Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at Holiday Hill Nursing Center.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a. m. today (Thursday) at Parker Funeral Home Chapel in Baird with Rev. Don Northway off ciating.  Burial will follow in the Admiral Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith was born May 13, 1913 in Dressy in Callahan County.  She had lived in Coleman four and a half years, moving here from Admiral, Texas.  She graduated from Cottonwood High School and she was a homemaker.  She was a member of the Admiral Baptist Church.  She married Clark (Buddy) Smith in Baird, Texas December 25, 1938.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Jacinto Ortega DeAnda passed away at his home Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at 6:20 p. m. in Sacramento, California.  Mass of Christian burial was 10:00 a. m. Saturday at St. Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church in Abilene.  Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery, directed by North’s Funeral Home.

Mr. DeAnda was born in Seguin, Texas in 1904 and moved to Abilene in 1951 from Coleman, Texas, then to Sacramento, California in 1975.  He was the beloved husband of the late Blandina DeAnda for 44 years.

Survivors include seven daughters, Mary Major, Alene Tellez, Agnes Garza, Rebecca Vargas, Rachel Martinez, Carolyn Anderson and Linda Sanchez; four sons, Jose, Jacinto Jr., Max and Arturo DeAnda; one sister, Consuelo Espinoza; one brother, Eduardo DeAnda; a number of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Brenda Jean Rodgers Gaines, 57, of San Angelo, died Tuesday, November 19 2002 at Hendrick Hospital in Abilene.  Services were 10 a. m. Thursday at Johnson Street Church of Christ in San Angelo with burial at 3 p. m. in Elmwood Memorial Gardens in Abilene. Arrangements were by Johnson’s Funeral Home of San Angelo.

Brenda was born November 16, 1945 in Coleman, Texas to Gene Rodgers and the late Maxine Rodgers.

Survivors include her husband, George Gaines of San Angelo; daughter, Diedra Bogle of San Angelo; father, Gene Rodgers and wife Jo of Abilene; mother-in-law, Helen Gaines of San Angelo; grandaughters, Latisha Taylor and husband Toby, Kayla Ashley and husband Cody; grandsons, Mark Gaines and Chad Parker; two great grandchildren, Paige and Cole Taylor, all of San Angelo; sisters, Pam Hamil and husband Ed of Round Rock, and Melinda Scott and husband Randy of Abilene; a niece and four nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Greg Gaines.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or donor’s favorite charity.

Graveside services for “Shady” Grady Wilkins, 56, of Blanket were held at 11 a. m. Saturday at Rock Church Cemetery in Brown County with Revs. Gary Day and Dean Banks officiating.  Burial followed in under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Early.  Mr. Wilkins died Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at Hendrick Medical Center.

Mr. Wilkins was born in Coleman County, the son of Charlie and Margaret Beatrice Ayers Wilkins. On November 11, 1965, he married Cynthia Jennell Smart in Mexico.  He was a carpenter and a truck driver.  He had a been a resident of Blanket for the last 30 years.  He was a Baptist and attended First Baptist Church in Blanket.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Jennell Wilkins of Blanket; son, Clayton Wilkins of Blanket; daughter, LaVonda Payne of Blanket; mother, Margaret Beatrice Wilkins of Blanket; two brothers, Jimmy Don Wilkins of Bangs and Billy Wilkins of Amarillo; four grandchildren, Cyndi Boykin, Chris Boykin, Gregory Fuller and Joseph Wilkins.  He was preceded in death by his father, Charlie Wilkins; and a sister, Margaret Elaine Wilkins.

Doyne McIver, age 63, of San Angelo, passed away November 21, 2002.  Funeral services were held November 23, 2002 at the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church with Rev. John Reynolds officiating.  Burial was at the Trickham Cemetery in Coleman County.

He was born April 14, 1939 in Tnickham, Texas to the late Grady and Genia Haynes McIver.  He was a 1957 graduate of Santa Anna High School and of McMurry College in 1961, receiving his masters of administration and education from the University of North Texas in 1965.  Mr. McIver was a former teacher and coach at Mesquite and Mansfield and served as high school principal in Wall, Texas until 1982 when he entered into the oil business.  He and his wife Wanda were married in 1959 and celebrated 45 years of marriage. Mr. McIver was a member of the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church, serving on several committees. He was instrumental in the development of the Broken Chain, Prison Ministry, a ministry devoted to supporting recently released prisoners and their families, serving as president for five years.

Survivors include his wife Wanda McIver; one son, Dr. Brad McIver of San Angelo; two daughters, Melinda Sayler of Georgetown, Texas and Tami Knight of San Angelo; two brothers, Royce McIver of Abilene and Terry McIver of Santa Anna; a sister, Gayla McIver Sellers of Fort Worth; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Lily Lorene Powell, age 90, of Coleman, died Thursday, November 21, 2002 at Bangs Nursing Home.  Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Robert Lee Cemetery, directed by Walker Funeral Home.

Born July 12, 1912 in Mercury, Texas she was the daughter of Samuel A. Richardson and Nancy Jane Ellis.  Her husband, Robert Dalton Powell, preceded her in death.  She was a housewife and a Baptist.

Survivors include daughters, Ruphina Hopson of Coleman, Doris Lara of Robert Lee and Mildred Sweza of Rockspring; sons, Alvin Powell and Robert Powell, both of Big Spring; 27 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and 19 great great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her husband Robert Dalton Powell; son Samuel R. Powell; and two grandsons, Willie O. Hopson and Roger D. McDonald.

James (Jess) Templeton, age 68, died November 22, 2002 in Stamford, Texas.  Funeral services were 2:00 p. m Sunday at Trinity Baptist Church in Haskell with Reverend Tony Grand and Kenneth Blair officiating.  Burial followed at Rochester Cemetery, under the direction of Holden McCauley Funeral Home.

James was born February 20, 1934 in Coleman, Texas.  He married Helen Johnston on October 23,1982 in Haskell.  He worked in the oilfield business for over 30 years as a tool pusher before his retirement.  He worked at Mesa Drilling and Sojournel Drilling.  He also served his country in the United States Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Templeton; five children, Michael, and wife Debra Bartley of Haskell; Terry, and wife, Kelly Bartley of Knox City; Sheila Hawkins of Abilene; Tammy Adkins of Abilene and Danny Harris of Aspermont; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Willie Mae Hart of Haskell; and eight nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Templeton and Herbert Templeton.

Tommy Starnes, age 65, of Arvada, Colorado died Friday, November 22, 2002 at his residence.  A funeral service was held in Colorado and burial was in the Coleman City Cemetery.

Tommy Starnes was born January 11, 1937 in Coleman and was the son of Tom and Mary Southern Garrett Starnes.  He grew up here and had lived in Colorado for many years.

Bennie Faye Creek Powell, 66, passed away Monday, November 25, 2002 at a care center in Torrance, California.  Her body will be cremated.

She was born May 26, 1936 at Leaday, Texas to Ben and Bessie Creek.  Ms. Powell graduated from Mozelle High School in May, 1956.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Juanell Creek.  Survivors include three daughters, Janice Beck of Bear Branch, Kentucky, Michel Faregood of Mayer, Arizona, Tammie Tate of Hisperia, California and two sons, Gary DePierre of San Diego, California and Phillip Conner of Sandston, Virginia. She is also survived by a sister, Dolores Tucker of Desdemona, Texas. 

Juanita Gonzales Ramirez, age 65, of Brownwood, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002.  Funeral service was 3:00 p. m. Wednesday at Davis-Morris Funeral Chapel in Brownwood with Rev. Ismael Ceniceros officiating.  Burial followed in Greenleaf Cemetery.

She was born July 23, 1937 in Paint Rock, Texas and was a resident of Brownwood two and one-half years.  She and Jesus Rosales Ramirez were married May 2, 1956 in Coleman, Texas.  She was a homemaker and a member of Mission Bautista Nueva Vida of Brownwood.

Survivors include her husband, Jessie Ramirez of Brownwood; a daughter, Mary Ceniceros and Ismael of Brownwood; four grandchildren, Daniel Ceniceros and Susan of Dallas, Noeh Ceniceros and Nereida of Brownwood, James Ceniceros and Johnathan Ceniceros of Brownwood; one great-grandchild, Noe Ceniceros of Brownwood; six brothers, Jimmy Gonzales, Medardo Gonzales, Gonzalo Gonzales, Erasmo
Gonzales, Saturnino Gonzales and Richard Gonzales; five sisters, Carolina Castañuela, Elida Perez, Petra Quiroz, Ventura Cadena, Catalina Ruiz.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Asencion Gonzales and two brothers, Asencion Gonzales, Jr. and Pablo Gonzales.

Freeda May Burkett of Park Hills passed away on November 27, 2002 at her residence at the age of 86 years.  Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m. today (Tuesday) at Burkett Cemetery Pavilion with Steve Burkett, grandson, officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of Walker Funeral Home.

She was born April 19, 1916 at Dressy, Texas, the daughter of the late William Macon and Alice (Campbell) Freeman.  She graduated from high school at Cross Plains, Texas and she attended Cisco Junior College.

In the early 50's Freeda assumed her favorite role in life she became "mother" to her orphaned niece, Karen Sitzer.  Freeda devoted herself to Karen, her family, her church-Burkett Church of Christ, her job and her community. Freeda moved to Burkett and began working for the U. S. Postal Service, where she served as Postmaster for over 30 years. She was active in Postal Associations, Community Center activities, the March of Dimes and the Burkett Cemetery Association.  Additionally, she served both the Coleman and Cross Plains newspapers as their local correspondent.

She married Virgil Burkett on March 10, 1979, and became an instant mother of 4 children and grandmother to 9.  After retirement, Virgil and Freeda enjoyed traveling each year throughout the U. S., traveling with the Good Sam's Tour Clubs and other friends, and spending time in Missouri with Virgil's family.  In 1999 with Alzheimers Disease stealing her memories and ability to care for her home and family, she and Virgil moved to Missouri and lived until her death.

 All of Freeda's family and friends will miss her energy and enthusiasm for life.  In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the American Heartland Hospice.

Funeral services for Robert L. “Bob” Gardner, 59, of Lake Brownwood were held at 2 p. m. Monday in Heartland Funeral Home Chapel in Early with Revs. Edmond Wheelis and Dick Williams officiating.  Burial followed in the Bangs Cemetery under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home.  Mr. Gardner died Thursday, November 28, 2002 at his residence.

He was born February 3,1943, in Valera, Texas.  He attended schools at San Angelo Central and later at Howard Payne University.  He worked for the City of Brownwood as a lab analyst.  He had served as president of the Texas Recreational Vehicle Association and also for the Texas Water Utilities.  He was a Baptist and a member of Crossroads Baptist Church.  He and Linda were married on October 18, 1974, in Hobbs, New Mexico.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Gardner of Lake Brownwood; two daughters, Carrie Gardner and Teana Chesney; one sister, Leslie Smith of San Angelo; and two grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Jean Nixon Gardner.
