Carrol Edwin "Ed" Childs, 86

Word has been received of the death of Mr. Carrol Edwin Childs, age 86 of Rolling Heights, California.  “Ed” was a football player and graduate of Coleman High School and brother to the late Mrs. Otto (Lena Faye) Irby of Coleman.  Other siblings also were students of Coleman schools.

Irene Anthony, 85

Irene Anthony, age 85, a long-time Coleman resident, sunrise April 28, 1917, sunset July 2, 2002 in a
Bandera nursing home.  Funeral service was held at 1:30 p. m. Tuesday in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ed Bigham officiating.  Burial followed in Coleman Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Irene was born in Coleman, Texas and was a daughter of Frank and Fannie Hubbard Alvey.  She grew up in Coleman and attended school here.  Irene married Virgil Anthony on June 4, 1938 in Coleman and he preceded her in death on September 22, 1989.  She was a cook at the Coleman hospital for many years and was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Eddie Marie Henson of Bandera, Texas; one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby Carl and Shirley Anthony of Abilene; three grandchildren, Jerry B. and wife Tracy Henson of Pipe Creek, Texas, Michelle Henson of Pipe Creek, Texas and Sabrina and husband Rusty Kirk of Abilene; four great-grandchildren, Barbara and Chris Henson of Pipe Greek, Texas and Cody and Drew Kirk of Abilene,Texas.  Memorials may be made to Ben Richey Boys Ranch, 501 Ben Richey Drive, Abilene, Texas 79602 or the donor’s favorite charity.

Mary Thomas Baker, 90

Mary Thomas Baker died July 2, 2002.  Private funeral services were held at the Gause, Texas cemetery.

She was born on May 22, 1912 in Gause, Texas to Roger Mills Thomas and Maggie Grisby Thomas.  Throughout her life she was active in Houston civic organizations and served as the Chairperson of the Houston International Services Committee of the Institute of International Education, an officer and board member of the Women’s Auxiliary to the Houston Bar Association, Young Audiences of Houston, Texas and the Pan American Roundtable of Houston, Texas.  She attended the University of Texas in Austin and was a graduate of the Texas Women’s University.  In 1937, she married Dillard Woodward Baker and they moved to Houston, Texas where she taught at St. John’s School.

Mrs. Baker was predeceased, by her son Jesse Kirkland Baker.  She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Dillard Woodward Baker and her son Roger Thomas Baker and wife, Carol Ellen Baker of New Orleans, Louisiana and Cart and Theresa Baker Norton of Houston, Texas.  In addition, she is survived by granddaughters, Mary Rose Browder of Washington. D. C., Catherine Theresa Baker of Houston, Texas, Alexandra Barrett Baker of New Orleans, Louisiana and her grandson, Dillard Mills Baker of New Orleans, Louisiana.  Local survivors are Baker Rudolph and Mrs. John Galey.

Kathleen N. Johnson, 16

PLACEDO - Kathleen Nicole “Bean” Johnson, age 16 of Placedo died Friday, July 5, 2002.  Services were held 10:00 a. m. Monday, July 8, 2002 in Rosewood Funeral Chapels in Victoria with Rev. Marcus Gohlke officiating.  Burial followed in Crescent Valley Cemetery.

Kathleen was born May 2,1986 in Victoria to J.W. and Tina Pickett Johnson of Placedo.  She was a junior at Bloomington High School and a member of First Baptist in Bloomington, Bloomington High School FFA serving as vice president and student advisor of LaBahia District, Rawhide Riders and Science Club.  She was employed by Subway at Speedy Stop No. 2 in Bloomington.

Survivors include her parents; sister, Rebecca Sue Vasquez of Harlingen; brothers, James Waylon
Johnson of Placedo, Jolen William Johnson of Temple and Jimmy Wayne Johnson, Jr. of Fort Worth; grandparents, John and Kathy KoIiba of Bloomington, Clint and Rita Day of Santa Anna and Gaylon and Brenda Pickett of Coleman; and great-grandmother, Willie May Wilson also of Coleman.

Memorials may be made to Junior Breeding Swine Division of Victoria Jaycees Livestock Show.

William Bradley Kyser, 41

William Bradley Kyser, age 41, of Coleman, died Saturday, July 6, 2002 at Coleman County Medical Center.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p. m. at the New Testament Holiness Church in Bangs with Brother Ronnie White officiating.  Burial will follow in the Coleman Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Brad Kyser was born on December 31, 1960 in Birmingham, Alabama where he grew up and attended school.  On August 1, 1993, he married Jessie Oliver in Bangs, Texas.  He had been an automotive technician and was a member of the New Testament Holiness Church in Bangs.  He had lived in Coleman for the past two years, moving here from Alabama.

Survivors include his wife, Jessie Kyser of Coleman; three daughters, Elyse Nicole Kyser of Birmingham, Alabama, Victoria Ashley Kyser and Jessica Hope Kyser, both of Coleman, Texas; one son, Seth Alexander Kyser of Birmingham, Alabama; his parents, Johnny and Linda Taylor of Birmingham, Alabama; two sisters, Deborah Davenport of Kimberly, Alabama and Sonja Busbee of Pinson, Alabama; one bother, Earl Lee Taylor of Trafford, Alabama; four aunts, one uncle, several nieces and nephews.

Agnes Lovelady, 96

Agnes Center Lovelady, age 96 of Ballinger, Texas died Tuesday morning, July 9, 2002 in Ballinger.  Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 13th at 10:30 a. m. at Rockwood Cemetery with Rev. Ferris Akins officiating. Interment will follow in Rockwood Cemetery under the direction of Rains-Seale Funeral Home of Ballinger.

Agnes was born January 28, 1906 in Coleman County to John and LuIa Center.  She married E.D. Lovelady on October 12, 1922 in Santa Anna.  She was a bookkeeper for Higginbotham’s and was also owner of Lovelady Grocery Store. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Ballinger.

Survivors include one son, Ewing and La Moyne Lovelady of Knoxville, Tennessee; one granddaughter, Carol Anne and James Millikin of Johnson City, Tennessee; one great-granddaughter, Susan Millikin of St. Louis, Missouri; and one sister, Doris Bass of Lufkin, Texas.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one brother, John Center, Jr.

Family visitation will be held tomorrow (Friday) from 7:00 to 8:00 p. m. at Rains-Seale Chapel in Ballinger.

Minnie Burkett, 92

Minnie Burkett, age 92, of Coleman, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at Coleman County Medical Center.  Funeral services were 10:00 a. m. Saturday at the Elm Street Church of Christ with Joe Halley officiating. Burial was in the Burkett Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Burkett was born on May 28, 1910 in Burkett, Texas and was a daughter of Arthur K. and Hulda Thate Wesley.  She grew up in the Burkett area and married Clarence Burkett on June 25, 1933; he preceded her in death.  She graduated from Daniel Baker College in 1937 with a B.S. in Education; she received her Master of Arts in 1951 from Hardin - Simmons University.  She had lived in Coleman since 1952 and was a school teacher for many years.  She was a member of Elm Street Church of Christ and Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include her son, Joe D. Burkett of Plano, Texas; four grandchildren, Jennifer Hazel of Noblesville, Indiana, Jeff Burkett of Indianapolis, Indiana, Valerie Bledsoe of Southaven, Mississippi and Michael Shonts of Prescott, Arkansas; four great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Henrietta Jackson of Cisco, Texas.  She was preceded in death by her daughter Ann Burkett Shonts on December 9, 1984.  Pallbearers were Melton Kennedy, Ricky Barnett, Kay Jackson, Jimmie Driskill, Johnny Baugh and Roy Buse.

Beverly Ann Math, 66

Beverly Ann Math, age 66 of Abilene died Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at Hendrick Medical Center.  A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church Chapel in Coleman, 10:00 a. m. tomorrow (Wednesday) July 17 with Dr. Dean Coultas officiating under direction of Community Memorial Funeral Home of Abilene.  The body will be cremated.

Mrs. Math was born October 1, 1935 in Miamisburg, Ohio to the late Ralph and Doris Maxwell Henning.  She graduated from Columbia Heights High School in Columbia Heights, Ohio.  She worked from 1970 to 1976 for Sterling Electric Construction as a payroll clerk and from 1976 until March 1993 for Old Republic National Title Insurance Company in Minneapolis as a recording clerk.  She held the position as treasurer and stewardship deacon at Christ English Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.  She moved to Coleman November 10, 1993 and became involved in Order of Eastern Star, CCMC Hospital Auxiliary and Keep Coleman Beautiful.  She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Coleman.

She is survived by one brother, Todd Henning of Las Vegas, Nevada and three sisters, Peggy Joe Henning of Las Vegas, Nevada, Charlotte Speelman of Portland, Oregon and Cynthia Henning of Sanatee, California.  Memorials may be made to CCMC Hospital Auxiliary, 310 Pecos Street, Coleman, Texas 76834.

Ed Sartor, 66

Services for Edwin Earl Sartor, age 66 of Lubbock were held Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at Highland Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Staton officiating assisted by Rev. Bob Blevins.  Burial followed in Resthaven Memorial under direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.  Mr. Sartor died July 7 in Lubbock.

He was born August 19, 1935 in Goldsboro, Texas to Earl and Mabel Sartor.  He moved to Lubbock in 1952 from Coleman and graduated from Lubbock High School in 1955.  He was a grocery store manager for Piggly Wiggly and later was a manager for Furr’s Grocery chain for 25 years.  He was a member of Highland Baptist Church, Merry Mixers and Solos Square Dance Club.

Mr. Sartor is survived by three sons, Gerald A. Sartor, James R. Sartor and Russell W. Sartor all of Wolfforth; one brother, Robert Sartor of Lubbock; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

William Bert "Bill" Bryan, Jr., 62

William Bert ‘Bill” Bryan, Jr., age 62, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at his residence after a lengthy illness.  Graveside services were 10 a. m. Saturday in Eula Cemetery, directed by ElIiott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory, Abilene.

Mr. Bryan was born on June 2 1940, in Abilene, Texas where he lived all of his life.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dera Patricia Bryan in 1992; his father, William B. Bryan, Sr. and a sister, Justine Smith.  Survivors include his son, Bill Bryan and wife, Stacy, of Abilene, daughters, Pam Sanders and husband, Travis, of Coleman, Eva White and husband, Jerry, of Post, and Jeri Long and husband, Tommy, of Abilene; his mother, Jewel Cude of Potosi, brothers, Don Bryan and Dale Bryan of Odessa, Dyrell Bryan of Texas, and Benny Bryan and Buddy Bryan of Abilene; sisters, Betty Sparks and Margaret Broadbent of Deer Park, Barbara Bryan of Potosi, and Deborah Cook of Abilene; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

W. F. Fenton, 92

W. F. Fenton, age 92, of Coleman, died Thursday (July 11, 2002) at Coleman County Medical Center.  Funeral services were held at 2:00 p. m. Saturday in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Sam Wilson officiating.  Burial followed in the Gouldbusk Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mr. Fenton was born November 9, 1909 in Coleman County, Texas and was the son of W. F. Fenton, Sr. and Minnie Dugger Fenton.  He grew up in the Gouldbusk area and attended school at Hill.  On April 2, 1927, he married Agnes Lucille Elliott and she preceded him in death on May 9,1984.  He married Iris Williams in 1987 in Brownwood.  He was a farmer/rancher and a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Iris Fenton of Coleman; one daughter and son-in-law, Sue and J. D. Townsend of Merkel; two sons, Archie Fenton of Gouldbusk and W. F. ‘Toodler” Fenton and wife Charlotte of Valera; one sister, Rosa Walker of Abilene; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-  great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by two sons, Frank Fenton and Joe Bob Fenton and one daughter, Dorothy Harding.  Pallbearers were G. A. Flippo, Keith Wilson, Gory Wilson, Chip Townsend, Wayne Pyburn and Bobby Odum.

Wanda Jones

Funeral services for Wanda Jones, age 64, of Brownwood were held at 10 a. m. Monday at Coggin Avenue Baptist Church with Dr. Steve McMeans officiating.  Interment followed in the Trickham Cemetery, under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood.  She died at her home in Brownwood on Friday, July 12, 2002.

Mrs. Jones had been a resident of Brownwood since 1945.  She married Charles Douglas Jones on March 15, 1952 in Brookesmith, Texas.  She was a member of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Kaye Jones; her parents, Odell and Rena Stearns; and one grandchild.  Survivors include her husband, Doug Jones of Brownwood; her daughter Sharon Wright and her husband, Jimmy, of Odessa; her son Larry Jones and his wife, Holly, of Brownwood; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ollie Lovell Malaer, 90

Ollie Lovell Malaer, age 90 of Coleman died Friday, July 12, 2002 at 11:00 p. m. in Coleman County Medical Center.  Services will be held Saturday, July 20, 2002, 2:00 p. m. at O’Bannon Funeral Home in Luling, Texas.

Mrs. Malaer was born in Caldwell County June 15, 1912.  She is survived by four sons, John Casey of Coleman, Wayne Malaer of Schertz, Marvin Malaer of Eula and Chucky Malaer of Stephenville; one sister, Mabel Garrett of Grosvenor; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great- great- grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by husband, Glynn Malaer and son, Robert Malaer.

Nettie Griffin, 86

Nettie Griffin, age 86, of Bangs, Texas, died at 12:45 a. m. Saturday, July 13, 2002 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center, following a lengthy illness.  Funeral services were 2 p. m. Monday at Bangs United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Roath officiating.  Interment followed in the Santa Anna Cemetery, under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

She was born September 1, 1915 in Santa Anna, Texas. Mrs. Griffin was retired alter 26 years employment from Texans, Inc.  She had been a resident of Bangs for 48 years and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Bangs.  On June 11, 1933, she and Alvis Griffin were married in Santa Anna.

Survivors are her husband, Alvis Griffin of Bangs; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and husband, David Williams of Brownwood, Sharon and husband, Jimmy Niell of Brownwood and Kay and husband, Weldon Wilson of Brownwood; twin sister, Hettie Scarbrough of Santa Anna; seven grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, John D. and Nancy L. Starr Williamson; two brothers, Oscar Williamson and J.D. Williamson, Jr.; and a sister, Pauline Scarbrough.

Robert Dean Futrell, 66

LAKE BROWNWOOD: Robert Dean Futrell, 66, died Sunday, July 14, 2002 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.  Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3 p. m. at Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Bill Swindler officiating.  Burial followed in the Rising Star Cemetery, directed by Heartland Funeral Home of Early.

Mr. Futrell was born in Coleman County, Texas, the son of the late Frank and Bess Strong Futrell.  He married Joann Aaron on June 20, 1975 in Lawton, Oklahoma.  He worked in sheet metal construction, and was a member of Sheet Metal Union Local 68.  He had served eight years with the Army National Guard.  Mr. Futrell had been a resident of Lake Brownwood since 1992 and was a Catholic.  He had formerly lived in Abilene and Azle.

Survivors include his wife, Joann Futrell of Lake Brownwood; four sons, Gregg and Dawn Futrell of Abilene, Ricky and Sarah McMillan of Azle, Michael Wayne McMillan of Louisiana and Michael Futrell of Lake Brownwood; four daughters, Stephanie Futrell Medina of Abilene, Patricia and Alan Lundgren of Gonzales, Barbara and Tommy Ramos of Clyde and Misty Futrell of Lake Brownwood; two sisters, Nell Jordan of Abilene and Jackie Berryman of Brownwood; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister-in-law, Evelyn Ramines; and one niece, Janie Medore.

Opal J. Elliott, 92

Opal J. Elliott, age 92, of Coleman died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Holiday Hill Nursing Home.  Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a. m. Friday in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Charles Sheffield officiating.  Burial will follow in the Coleman Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Opal was born December 9,1909 in Shields, Coleman County, Texas and was a daughter of Charlie Barton and Hattie V. Powers Barton Majors.  She grew up in the Gouldbusk area and graduated from Gouldbusk High School in 1929.  On December 24, 1931 she married T. A. ‘Bud’ Elliott and he preceded her in death on October 1, 1989.  She was a homemaker and seamstress for the public for many years.  She was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Ted Ehrler of Coleman; two granddaughters, Christi Ehrler of Coleman and Shanna (and husband Geoffrey) Hollingsworth of Pflugerville, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Aaron and Haley Hollingsworth of Pflugerville, Texas; and two sisters, Katie Jones of Coleman and Jewel Wheeler of Odessa.
Memorials may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.

Visitation will be tonight (Thursday) from 5:00 p. m. until 7:00 p. m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Cynthia Hollaway, 92

Mrs. Cynthia Ellen Hollaway, age 92 of Coleman, Texas died Tuesday, July 16, 2002 at 6:32 p. m. at Holiday Hill Nursing Home.  Graveside services will be held today (Thursday) July 18th at 2:00 p. m. at Duren Cemetery near Mullin with Bro. Ray Martin of Brownwood officiating.  Interment will follow at Duren Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman.

Mrs. Hollaway was born March 16, 1910 in Duren, Texas to George and Alma Green Blackman.  She married Homer Franklin Hollaway on July 16, 1926 in Whiterack, Texas and he preceded her in death in 1968.  She lived most of
her life in Mills County and had lived in Coleman County since 1992.  She was a housewife and a Methodist.

Survivors include one daughter, Lola Dixon of Coleman; one son, Carol Hollaway of Coleman; grandchildren, Bobby and Sam Dixon, Maggie Dixon Wright, Teressa Griffin and Patricia Ford all of Coleman, Betty Dixon Lynn of Bloomed, WI, Danny Dixon of Valliant, OK, George Hollaway, Jr. and Teresa Westbrook both of Sunray, Texas, and several other grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by one son.

Corinne Poston - Faulkner, 93

Funeral services were held July 18, 2002 at the Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas for Corinne Poston - Faulkner, age 93 of Dallas.  She died July 16, 2002 and burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mrs. Faulkner was born January 25, 1909 in Fort Worth, Texas the third child of the late Arch and Eva Oakes Poston, and the granddaughter of the late N. R. and Martha Ellen Oakes, an early day family to Coleman County.  Mrs. Faulkner was married September 20, 1931 to Harold M. Faulkner who preceded her in death.  She was an active member of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church, serving as president of the Women of the Church and in various other offices through the years.

Survivors include one son, Ronald Harold Faulkner of Dallas; two grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.  Other survivors in this area are cousins: Neal Oakes of Stephenville; Mrs. Louise Konze and Fred Oakes of Abilene; Novelle Boylston and Gwendolyn Walker of Santa Anna.

Velda Lee Moore Mills, 90

Velda Lee Moore Mills, age 90 of Olton, Texas formerly of Santa Anna passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2002, 3:50 p. m. at Running Water Draw Care Center in Olton.  Services were held 2:00 p. m. Saturday at Northside Church of Christ with Sam Wilson officiating.  Interment followed in Santa Anna Cemetery with Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna in charge of arrangements.

Velda was born January 31, 1912 in Falls County, Texas to the late Sam A. and Nola A. Tarver Mills.  She was reared in the Cleveland Community of Coleman County where she attended schools.  Velda married C. G. (Buck) Mills October 30, 1930 and they celebrated 56 years of marriage.  Buck preceded her in death in 1987.  She was a lifetime member of Coleman County where she was a charter member of Northside Church of Christ and a homemaker.

Shannon "Shane" Phillips, 28

Shannon “Shane” Phillips, 28 of Houston died July 19, 2002.  Shannon was murdered while washing his car at a car wash in southwest Houston at 12:31 a. m.  The Houston police have very little to go on as no one has come forward with any information on this crime.  Funeral service was Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon in the chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons with Dr. James DeLoach, Rev. Benny Hagen and Rev. Albert Butler officiating.  Interment followed in Memorial Oaks Cemetery.

Shannon was the grandson of Fred Wayne Phillips who graduated from Centennial High School and lived most of his childhood in Coleman County.  Shannon attended Second Baptist High School and the University of Houston.  He was co-owner of Phillips Wrecker Service and was a member of Second Baptist Church for 21 years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Lee Phillips.  Survivors include his grandparents who reared him most of his life, Fred W. and Jean Phillips; fiancee, Mary Morgan; his son, Shannon Phillips, Jr.; a sister, Brandly Lee Phillips; many cousins, aunts and uncles.

John R. Dobbins, 77

Mr. John R. Dobbins, age 77 of Coleman died Friday, July 19, 2002 at 11:42 a. m. at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral services were held Monday, July 22nd at 2:00 p. m. at Walker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Claud Woods officiating. Interment followed at Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman.

Mr. Dobbins was born January 27, 1925 in Coleman to Riley and Dallie Cope Dobbins. He married Marjorie Woods on April 24, 1948 in Hobbs, New Mexico and she preceded him in death in January of this year.  He was a retired mechanic and a Baptist.

Survivors include three daughters, Jeannie Ruth Herring of Mesquite, Texas, Elizabeth Ann McLaughlin and Connie M. Olinger both of Coleman; five sons, Andy R. Dobbins of McKinney, Eugene Dobbins, Donnie Dobbins, Johnny Dobbins and Robert Dobbins all of Coleman; one brother, Robert Dobbins of Dallas; 20 grandchildren and 23 great- grandchildren.

Mr. Dobbins’ grandsons served as pallbearers.  Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Bobbie Kay Winter, 59

Bobbie Kay Winter, age 59 of Colin County, Texas formerly of Coleman passed away Sunday, July 21, 2002 at her residence.  Memorial services will be announced at a later date.  Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman will be in charge of arrangements.

Bobbie was born May 3, 1943 in Coleman to the late James Thomas and Warene Frances White Harmes.  She attended Coleman and Snyder schools and presently had been a resident of Collin County where she was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sisters, Patsy Gray of Denver, Colorado and Melissa Mayo of Coleman and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ludolph Darvin Greenwood, 87

Ludolph Darvin Greenwood (known to most by his initials “L. D.”) passed away Sunday, July 21, 2002 at The Forum at Memorial Woods, a senior living community in Houston.  A private graveside service with family members will be held at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery in Austin.

He was born October 2, 1914 in Chico, Texas to Gladys Helen (Parnell) and Snow Leslie Greenwood.  Raised in Bowie, Texas, the eldest of five children, Mr. Greenwood traveled the country by himself at age 12 on the Union Pacific Railroad and successfully built an entire biplane with a younger brother at only 14 years of age.  That experience served him well later on when he constructed a homebuilt Rutan Long EZY airplane that was eventually donated to Purdue University’s flight/training program.

Mr. Greenwood left the family farm to attend college at age 15 and eventually received his Bachelor of Science degree from University of Texas at Austin in Physics after serving as a member of one of the physics teams at the university involved in the historic event of successfully splitting the atom.  While attending the university, he was a driver for the Texas Rangers and worked for a Senator in the Texas State Legislature in Austin.  In the early 1930’s, Mr. Greenwood started the first radio station in Bowie with a home-built 50-watt transmitter and later established “The Voice of Coleman” radio station in Coleman, Texas.  During World War II, he worked at the ship channel supervising ventilation of war ships and cargo-carriers.

Mr. Greenwood served in numerous civic and business organizations including downtown branch of Rotary Club of Houston where he received special recognition for over fifty years of perfect attendance as an active member.  He was a longtime member of Seventh Church of Christ, Scientist in Houston and was very active in church activities including serving a term as First Reader.

He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 60 years, Margaret Robbins Greenwood; and brothers, James Marshall Greenwood and Joseph Leslie Greenwood.  Survivors include daughters, Celinda Greenwood Kuenneke and husband, Dave and Elizabeth Ann Williamson and husband, Clark; grandchildren, Celinda Elizabeth Moening and husband, Dan, David Walter Kuenneke, Jr. and Shane Greenwood Williamson; great-grandchildren, Adrienne Moening and Conor Moening; sisters, Bennie Love Gettys and Marian Cynthia (Babe) Frazier; nieces, Barbara Vaknine, Kristen Rogers, Karis Verlander, Janelle Young, Brooke Harvey, Anne Munitz and Janice Fell; and nephews, Cliff Frazier, Jr., Dean Greenwood and Larry Greenwood.

Mrs. Joan Pearce, 88

Mrs. Joan Pearce, age 88 of Denison, former longtime resident of Coleman passed away 11:15 a. m. Monday, July 22, 2002 at Texarkana Medical Center in Denison.  Services are pending with Walker Funeral Home with Rev. John Stanislaw, pastor of First Baptist Church officiating.

Mrs. Pearce was born May 14, 1914 in Grosvenor, Texas to William and Artie Wilkins Staggs.  She married Gordon Pearce November 4, 1933 in Ballinger and he preceded her in death in 1984.  She was a member of First Baptist Church of Fairfield, Texas.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Donnie (Ann) Holt of Woodbridge, Virginia and Mrs. Ricky (Bettye) Barnes of Burleson; three sons, Bill Pearce of Denison, Ronnie Pearce of Fairfield and Jerry Pearce of Victoria; fourteen grandchildren and eleven great- grandchildren.

Estella May McDonald, 92

Estella May McDonald, age 92 of Coleman, died Monday, July 22, 2002 at Coleman Healthcare Center.  Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a. m. today (Thursday) at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Paul Smith officiating.  Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. McDonald was born June 2, 1910 in Trent, Texas, a daughter of Georgia May Blankenship and Dollie Alice Purser Blankenship.  She was reared in Trent and attended school in White Flat.  She married J.W. McDonald on October 30, 1926 in Trent.  He preceded her in death in October 1977.  She moved to Coleman in 1941.  She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy McDonald and Pauline McDonald, both of Coleman; one brother, Albert Blankenship of Coleman and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Oelbert William McDonald in 1927 and one brother, Homer Blankenship in 1985.

Mattie Stovall, age 88 of Trinity, Texas formerly of Coleman passed away Monday, July 22, 2002 at Avalon Place Nursing Home in Trinity.  Services were graveside 2:00 p. m. Friday at Mount View Cemetery with Dr. Charles Sheffield officiating under direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman.

Mattie was born February 26, 1914 in Brownwood to the late John Andrew and EuIa Lee Tackett Early.  She was reared in Brown and Coleman Counties and attended Liberty schools.  She married Walker Berry Stovall in Bangs April 29, 1933 and they celebrated fifty-four years of marriage.  Walker preceded her in death in 1987.  Mattie was a member of Community Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Don Smith of Lamesa and Gayle and Chuck Cloe of Huntsville; sister, Lora Russell of Santa Anna; brother, Bill Early of Littleton, Colorado; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  Mattie was preceded in death by three brothers, Edmond, Jack and Horace Early.

Udell Copeland, age 81 of Santa Anna passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2002 at 1:32 a. m. at Abilene Regional Medical Center.  Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 11:00 a. m. at the Northside Church of Christ with Sam Wilson officiating.  Interment will follow at the Santa Anna Cemetery under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Santa
Anna.

Udell was born July 7,1921 in Brown County, Texas to the late Charlie Clyde and Nena Flowers Windham.  She married Glen Copeland in Coleman on July 28, 1945 and they celebrated forty-eight years of marriage.  Glen preceded her in death in 1994.  She has been a resident of Santa Anna since 1937 moving here from Burkett and she attended the
Burkett and Santa Anna schools.  Udell was a member of the Northside Church of Christ and a nutritionist and homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Dianne Sindt of Lewisville, Texas and Paula Blanton of Santa Anna; one son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Jackie Copeland of San Jose, California; two sisters, Ettie Hubbard of Bronte, Texas and Faye Dean of Coleman; three brothers, Otis Windham of Houston, Texas, Oddie Clyde Windham of DeSoto, Texas and Arthur Windham of Coleman; five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Gary Hubbard, Mike Hubbard, Richard Hubbard, Vince Hubbard, Allen Windham, Marty Windham and Tony Windham.

Graham Bevel, 78

Graham Bevel, age 78 of Coleman died Wednesday, July 24, 2002 at Kindred Hospital in Dallas.  Funeral services were held Saturday, July 27, 2002 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gary Boyd officiating.  Burial followed in Coleman City Cemetery under direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Graham was born September 14, 1923 in Fort Worth, a son of George Clarence and Willie Finney Bevel.  He served in United States Navy Reserve during World War II from 1943 to 1946.  He graduated from Baylor University in 1948 with a B.B.A. degree in Accounting.  He married Flora Jean Seals March 1, 1981 in Midland.  She preceded him in death January 1994.  He later married Nora Smith Robinson April 22, 1995 in Coleman.  She preceded him in death April 2002.  Graham lived in Midland from 1961 to 1986, was an active member of Fannin Terrace Baptist Church and Boy Scouts of America troop leader.  He worked for Gulf Oil while in Midland.  He moved to Coleman in 1986, was Director of Loaves and Fishes Ministry, was named Citizen of the Year in 1991 and was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

Survivors include four sons, Mike Bevel of Katy, Jerry Bevel of Andrews, Greg Bevel of Dallas and Rim Watson of Mayfield, Kentucky; two step-sons, Joe Robinson and Larry Robinson both of Coleman; one step-daughter, Judy Rasbury of Mesquite; one brother-in-law, J. B. Smith of Coleman; 13 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and first wife, Ruth Willis of Rockwall.  He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister and one brother, George Clarence Bevel.

Lucy B. Blount, 78

Lucy B. Blount, age 78, of Deport, Texas and a former Coleman resident, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002 in Deport Nursing Home.  Graveside funeral services were held at 10:00 a. m. Monday at Santa Anna Cemetery with Rev. James Ford officiating.  Services were under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Lucy was born June 24, 1924 in Winters, Runnels County, Texas and was the daughter of Ben and Mary Esther Horton Bogart.  She grew up in Ballinger where she attended school.  In the late 1940’s she moved to Imperial Valley, California where she lived until 1982.  She was a baker and a waitress and married George Blount on July 18,1982 in Imperial, California.  He preceded her in death on February 24, 1990.  She lived in Coleman until 1996 and was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Santa Anna.

Survivors include two daughters, Nell Smith of Washington and Ann (and husband Jesse) Sanders of Paris, Texas; one son, Randy J. (and wife Irma) Rister of Imperial, California; one step-daughter, Sherri Barfield of Corpus Christi, Texas; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Floyd Bogart of El Centro, California; and one sister, Virdie Lee Jackson of Austin, Texas.  She was preceded in death by a son, James Elton Rister in 1992.

Claud Coats, 74

Claud Coats, age 74, of Novice, died Thursday evening, July 25, 2002 at his residence.  Funeral services were held at 4:00 p. m. Saturday in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dexton Shores officiating.  Burial was in Midway Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Claud was born January 22, 1928 in Content, Runnels County, Texas and was a son of Clarence Earnest Coats and Lillie O. Foust Coats.  He grew up in the Content and Novice area and graduated from Novice High School in 1944.  Following his graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy for two years.  On July 26, 1949 he married Hortense “Shorty” Shores in Coleman.  He was a heavy equipment operator truck driver and contract pumper.

Survivors include his wife, Shorty Coats of Novice; two sons, Charles (and wife Vickie) Coats of Gouldbusk and Deral Coats of Content; 11 grandchildren Claudette Ratliff, Celeste Coats, Calisha Atkins, Calan Wills, Bud Coats, Dustin Coats, Alicia Sanders, Mitzi White, Dawn White, Lauren White and Carlee Coats; two great-grandchildren, Kayelee Wilhelm and Shayna Ratliff; niece and nephew, Ellen Jo Johnson of Novice and Troy Coats of Abilene great-nieces and great-nephews, Renea (and husband Brent) McMillan, Sequoyah Coats, Roi Michelle and Jake Coats, Whitney and Brittni McMillan. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Melinda Coats, in 1996.

Word has been received of the recent death of W. D> Sheffield, Jr. of Odessa, Texas, a Coleman County native.

Mr Sheffield was the only child of the late William D. and Daphna Duggins Sheffield.  He was a 1940 graduate of Santa Anna High School and the owner and operator of a nickelodeon company.  His wife preceded him in death.

Survivors include one daughter of Odessa and a local cousin, Mrs. Rosemary Duggins Parsons of Coleman.

Rash of County Accidents Result in One Fatality

Three accidents occurring on Friday, July 26th resulted in a fatality in one of the accidents and injuries to others.  According to Department of Public Safety Officer Pat Salas, …

The second five-vehicle accident resulted in a fatality, which occurred at 3:20 p. m. Friday, approximately 2.5 miles north  of Coleman on Highway 283.  The chain of events occurred when a 1999 Chevrolet van, driven by Demarco Upshaw, 30, from Abilene was traveling southbound and while traveling, came upon a construction zone where there were four vehicles stopped as a result of a flag man holding back the cars.  Each car was waiting until a pilot vehicle could escort them into the construction zone.  Upshaw’s van collided with the back end of a 1996 Ford Ranger pickup driven by Tammy McDorman, 43, of Coleman.  McDorman’s son Bubba Shaw, 18, was a passenger in the pickup.  McDorman’s pickup in turn collided with a 1996 Suburban driven by Chrissi Hail, 40, of Coleman.  The Hail vehicle then collided with a 1998 Toyota Camry driven by Richard Bryan, 30, of Bronte.  A passenger in the Camry vehicle was Bryan’s wife Cassie, 22, who was transported to the Coleman County Medical Center.  She has been dismissed from Coleman County Medical Center.  In turn, the Bryan Toyota collided with a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Chester Airheart, 38, of Brady.  Traveling with Airheart was his 11 year-old daughter.  Neither were injured in the accident.

Tammy McDorman, driver of the Ford Ranger pickup and her son Bubba Shaw, were transported to CCMC where McDorman was pronounced dead.  Shaw was transported by Airflight from CCMC to Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit.


Tammy Evadeen McDorman, age 43, of Coleman died at 4:35 p. m. Friday, July 26, 2002 at Coleman County Medical Center.  Funeral services were 2:00 p. m. Monday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel with Bill Donald officiating.  Burial followed in the White Chapel Cemetery, under the direction of Walker Funeral Home.

Born March 5,1959 in Coleman, Texas, she was the daughter of Sam Bolton and Mahdeen Needham Bolton.  She had lived in Coleman most of her life.

Survivors include her husband Terry Fortune; her mother, Mahdeen Needham Bolton; three daughters, Shannon Nicole Connelly, B. J. Shaw and Chey Anne McDorman, all of Coleman; a son, Bubba Shaw of Coleman; step-children, Lee McDorman, Stephanie McDorman-Brewer, Geno Fortune and Crystal Webb; five sisters, Sherry Mayfield of Brownwood, Rita McAlister of Coleman, Jo Foster of Potosi, Cindy Donald of Runaway Bay and Tonya Roberts of Coleman; four brothers, Sammy Bolton of Coleman, Jack Bolton and Dan Bolton, both of Brownwood and Bud Bolton of Runaway Bay; and two grandchildren, Taylor Connelly and Trenton Fortune.

Pallbearers were Guy, Brad and Chad Bolton, Jim Bob Stapleton and Colby Stratton.

Richard Dillingham, 86

Richard Dillingham, age 86, of Shields passed away Friday, July 26, 2002 at 12:20 p. m. at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.  Services were Monday at 2:00 p. m. at the Gouldbusk Methodist Church with Rev. Kermit Sorrells and Rev. Helen McIver officiating.  Interment followed at the Shields Cemetery under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna.

Richard was born May 16, 1916 in Shields, Texas to the late John Will and Ura M. Wheatley Dillingham.  He was a lifetime resident of Coleman County where he graduated from Santa Anna High School.  Richard continued his education at Hardin-Simmons University and received his Bachelor degree from Texas Tech University.  He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a medic.  A retired school teacher, he taught school at Shields, Mozelle, Baird and San Antonio and was also a stock-farmer.  Richard was a member of the Gouldbusk United Methodist Church and the American Legion.

Survivors include three nieces, Jo Minard of College Station, Texas; Marget Sliger of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Linda Pistokache of Kennedale, Texas; three nephews, Jack Dillingham of Santa Anna, Texas; Dr. John Dillingham of College Station, Texas and Martin West of Kennedale, Texas; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Dillingham of Shields, Texas and several cousins. Richard was preceded in death by his sister, Viola West and three brothers, Edward, Jack and 0.5. Dillingham.  Pallbearers were Lee Wayne West, William West, Harold Hackney, Charlie Dixon, Randy Pistokache, Glen Bohannan, Jerry Sliger and Loyd Ray Hughes.

Edna Mae “Boots” Earnhart Wright, age 74 of Coleman, died Monday, July 29, 2002 at Coleman County Medical Center.  The body will be cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later date.  Arrangements were made by Stevens Funeral Home.

Edna was born November 18, 1927 in Whitesboro, Texas and was a daughter of John Allen Earnhart and Edna Virginia Slaton Earnhart.  She grew up in Texas and New Mexico where she also attended school.  On February 22, 1944 she married Romie Breeden and he preceded her in death in 1975.  She married Earl Wright in 1978 in Lovington, New Mexico and he preceded her in death on September 1, 2000.  She had been a mail carrier in Hobbs, New Mexico for a number of years and moved to Coleman in 1992.  She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Johnnie (and husband Wayne) Bradford of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Romie Jean (and husband Danny) Nowlin of Warren, Texas and Paulinda Sue Boyer of Coleman; son-in-law, Mike Garza of Coleman; two brothers, Claude Allen (and wife AIva) Earnhart of Millsap, Texas and James Edwin Earnhart of Tulare, California; one sister, Marie Fleetwood of Oklahoma; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two aunts, Eloise Hunter and Eva Cross both of Hobbs, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Dee Garza on May 14, 1999.

Mrs. Lola Faye Kelley

Mrs. Lola Faye Lee Kelley of Haltom City, Texas, formerly of Santa Anna, died July 29, 2002.  Funeral services were held August 1, 2002 and she was buried in Colleyville, Texas.  Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Greenwood Mt. Olivet Funeral Home.

Mrs. Kelley was the daughter of W. T. Lee and Ruby Lee of Santa Anna.  She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Elmer L. Kelley of Haltom City; six daughters, JoAnn Bassett of Fort Worth, Eva Jean Ward of Cleburne, Mary KeIley of Fort Worth, Judy Boots of North Richland Hills, Becky Haire of Haltom City and Martha Rushing of Plainview; one son, Steven KelIey of Fort Worth; three sisters, Ila Mae Lea of Kentwood, Louisiana, Joy Jorbish of Whitney, Texas and Gladys Thompson of Fort Worth; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

J. R. Wesson, 80

Funeral services for J.R. Wesson, age 80, of Brownwood (formerly of Coleman County) will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p. m. at the Church of Christ, 216 W. Elm Street, Coleman.  Visitation will be held from 10:30 a. m. until services at 2 p.m. at the church.  Burial will follow in the Coleman Cemetery, under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Early, Texas.  Mr. Wesson died Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center after a short illness.

He was born June 29, 1922 in Coleman County to Jim and Dessie Wesson.  J.R. served his country in the U.S. Army in WWII and was a decorated veteran.  He married Melba Ballard of Fisk in 1946.  He worked as a butcher for Safeway Grocery Stores for many years.  After he retired, he worked part-time for Holley Chevrolet.  He was a faithful member of the Church of Christ for 50 years.  He loved to fish and was a great storyteller.

Survivors include his wife, Melba; his sister, Nellie Davis of Coleman; his three children: Nita Meador and husband Gary of Brownwood, Larry Wesson of Austin and Ken and wife, Karen Wesson of Wylie; nine grandchildren, Jami, Jarah and Cody Meador, Chris and Heather Wesson, Lauren, Michelle and Niki Petz, Casey Cochran and wife Audrey and two great-grandchildren, Kailyn and Shelby Cochran. He also has a large extended family including nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. J. R. was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Dessie Wesson; sister, Iva Hammonds; brother, Aubrey “Duck” Wesson, all of Coleman.
