County Man Dies In Two-Vehicle Accident; Nine Persons Injured By Billie Mercer A 37-year-old Coleman County man was killed, and nine others were injured in a two vehicle collision Thursday, four miles east of Coleman on County Road 136. Officers were called to the scene at 11:15 p. m. after a 1999 Dodge truck driven by Shirley Bartell, 28, of Coleman and a 2002 Ford pickup driven by William Lipscomb of Coleman County collided. Lipscomb was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:10 a. m. Friday by Coleman Justice of the Peace Nance Campbell. According to the investigating officer, the eight passengers in the Bartell vehicle were returning from a family reunion when the accident occurred. The Bartell vehicle was traveling west while Lipscomb’s truck was traveling east. The two vehicles collided head on the left (driver’s) side in “the center of the road,” the officer reported. The impact forced the Bartell vehicle backwards approximately 50 feet into a ditch. The Lipscomb pickup caught on fire shortly after impact. Lipscomb’s wife, Jennifer, 27 was taken to Coleman County Medical Center where she was treated for minor injuries and released Friday morning. Bartell was listed in serious condition with internal and facial injuries and was transported from CCMC to Shannon Hospital in San Angelo Friday morning. She is scheduled to undergo facial surgery tomorrow (Wednesday). Her husband, Britt F. Bartell, 36, was reported to be in stable condition with cuts and bruises. He was transferred to Brownwood Regional Medical Center where he was to undergo surgery on an arm Monday. Four-year-old Douglas Bartell of Coleman was listed in serious condition with possible internal injuries. He was transported to Cooks Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth. He was tested for internal injuries and it was determined he was not as seriously injured as first believed. He is now at home. Britt Stephen Bartell, nine years of age, was taken to Brownwood Regional and treated for a broken arm. He is now recovering at home. Two other passengers in the Bartell vehicle - Shelly Kile, 11, and Desirah Kile, 12, both of Dennham Springs - were reported to be in good condition with cuts and bruises. Both were treated and released from the Coleman hospital. They both are now at home. Michael Maldonado, 10, and Kristen Taylor, 12, both of Santa Anna, who were also riding in the Bartell vehicle were reported in good condition, treated and released from the hospital. Michael is now recovering at home from a deep bruise caused by the seat belt he was wearing. Only three people in the two the vehicles are believed to have been wearing seat belts. An air bag did deploy on the Bartell vehicle but it is believed the Lipscomb vehicle was not equipped with an air bag. Investigating the accident was Department of Public Safety Officer James O’Shields.
