J.A. Bozeman of Coleman, died Thursday (December 6, 2001) at Abilene Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Saturday in the Elm Street Church of Christ with Joe Hailey officiating and assisted by Fred Bozeman. Burial will follow at Coleman Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Mr. Bozeman was born January 13, 1922 in Shields, Texas and was a son of the late John Aaron and Lillie Mae Loyd Bozeman. He grew up in Coleman and attended school here. He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters. On September 20, 1945 he married Rena Vivian Jewell in Coleman. He owned and operated Bozeman Plumbing in Coleman for over 37 years. He was a long-time member and deacon of Elm Street Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Vivian Bozeman of Coleman; two daughters, Ellen Joyce Poisall (and husband Charles) of North Richland Hills, Texas and Melissa Joy Bagley (and husband Terry) of Brownwood, Texas; one son, Fred Bozeman (and wife Carol) of Rye, Colorado; nine grandchildren, Alisa Henderson (and husband J. J.) of Creedmoor, N.C., Rebecca Day (and husband Carson) of Bedford, Texas, Christopher Bozeman (and wife Teri) of Rye, Colorado, Michael Bozeman of Tyler, Texas, Tiffany, Sherry, Jeffery Bagley all of Brownwood, Michael and Gary Bagley both of Coleman; nine great-grandchildren, Emily Faith Henderson, Abigail Jordan Herderson, Bonnie Bozeman, Benjimen Bozeman, Kaitlyn Bagley, McKenzie Bagley, Caleb Bagley, Gary Bagley, Jr., Bryan Lee Bagley; two sisters, Ruby Arms of Coleman and Willie B. Rev. P.A. Lindley of Coleman, died Thursday (December 6, 2001) at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a. m. Saturday (December 8, 2001) at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. T. H. Chapman officiating assisted by Rev. ElRoy Martin. Graveside services will be held 2:30 p. m. at Fulton Cemetery near Walnut Springs in Bosque County. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Rev. Lindley was born September 20, 1911, in Cottle County, near Paducah, a son of Samuel Richard and Arunah Garner Lindley. He was raised and attended schools in Quanah. He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's. He married Laverne Rhodes on December 24, 1963 in Abilene. She preceded in death on April 21, 2001. He pastered several churches including Lawn before moving to Coleman in the 1960's, where he pastered the United Pentecostal Church. Survivors include two brothers, Harold Lindley of Lake Leon, Texas and J. T. Lindley of Ranger; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Rev. Lindley was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Walter Lindley and Izetta Redwine. Visitation will be held Friday (December 7, 2001) from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m at the funeral home. |

SANTA ANNA - Sallie Ellerbe of Santa Anna, formerly of Wisner, Louisiana died Saturday at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Santa Anna Cemetery with Rev. Marvin Hale officiating, under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna. She was born in 1910 in Gilbert, Louisiana. She married Theodore Ellerbe in Winnsboro, Louisiana and he preceded her in death in 1972. She was a lifetime resident of Louisiana moving to Santa Anna in 1993. She was a member of the Baptist Church and Eastern Star. She was a homemaker and involved in nursing, farming and quilting. Survivors include: eight grandchildren, including Jimmy and Bryan Ellerbe of Santa Anna; numerous great and great-great grandchildren. |

Funeral services are will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday graveside at Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home. He was born in 1919 in Coleman County. He married Ragenna Baker in 1997 in Abilene. He was a paint and body worker, Baptist and veteran of the 36th Division, 142nd Infantry. Survivors include: his wife - Ragenna Hamilton; daughters - Debra Hedges of Ohio and Sheila Brown of Abilene; step-sons - David Wayne Baker of Tennessee and Jake Baker III of Tennessee; a sister - Lenna Jones of Coleman; brothers - Weldon Hamilton of Coleman and Randall Hamilton of Big Sandy; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. |

Robert T. Smith of Santa Anna died Monday, December 10, 2001. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 12th at First Baptist Church in Santa Anna. Rev. Bruce Hess, Dr. Robert L. Smith and Rev. Raymond Jones will officiate. Burial will follow at the Santa Anna Cemetery under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna. Family visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at Henderson Funeral Home. Robert was born on April 25, 1930 in Coleman County. He was a lifetime resident of Coleman County where he graduated from Novice High School. Robert moved to Santa Anna in 1948 and was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons. He married Mary Farr in Santa Anna in 1983 and they have celebrated 18 years of marrieage. Robert was a member of Masonic Mountain Lodge #661 and retired in 1994 as a supervisor for 3M. Survivors include: his wife - Mary Smith of Santa Anna; three daughters - Suwanee Smith of Abilene, Lucinda Price of Brownwood and Robin Roberts of Abilene; three sons - Bill Smith of Brownwood, Tracy Smith of San Saba and Travis Smith of Bryan; his mother - Delinda Smith of Santa Anna; two sisters - Joyce Mobley of San Marcos and Lena Clevenger of Fisk; 10 grandchildren. |
SHERMAN - Sammie Adams of Sherman, formerly of Burkett, died Monday, December 10, 2001 in Whitesboro. A private burial will be held at Adams Cemetery near Burkett. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Lake Site V.F.W. in Pottsboro. Arrangements were made by Stevens Funeral Home. Sammie Adams was born in 1929 in Santa Anna to the late Harold and Luceill Parsons Adams. He grew up in Burkett and attended school there. He had lived in Sherman for the past 50 years where he was employed in road construction. Survivors include: one daughter - Vickie Adams of Collinsville; a cousin - Bill Slack of Coleman. Voyce Turner Nobles of Coleman died Monday, December 10, 2001 at Coleman County Medical Center. The body was cremated and no public service is planned. Arrangements were made by Stevens Funeral Home. Mrs. Nobles was born on June 3, 1931 in Kempner, Texas and was the daughter of the late Lydia Smith Turner and Ira Henderson Turner. She grew up in Lampasas County and attended school there. She had lived most of her life in the Lampasas and Kempner area and moved to Coleman several years ago. She was a Baptist. She is survived by: two nephews - Dale Dowden of Wharton and Lary Rose of Menard; numerous cousins. |

GOLDSBORO - Roy Bodine of Coleman, former life-long resident of Goldsboro, died at Holiday Hill Nursing Home Thursday, December 13, 2001. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 16th at Walker Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Curtis Morton officiating. Burial will follow at Midway Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to Holiday Hill Nursing Home of Coleman. He was born June 21, 1909 in Grimes County, Texas. He married Addie Shelton in 1929 in Burkett. She preceded him in death November 30, 2001. He lived all of his life in the Goldsboro area. He was a stockfarmer and member of Novice Baptist Church. Ruby was born March 27, 1921 in Cottonwood. She was a lifetime resident of Coleman and Runnels Counties and attended Coleman County schools. She married Frank Eugene Eldred on January 27, 1942 in Coleman and they celebrated 46 years of marriage. Frank preceded her in death in 1988. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church, a homemaker and retired from Dry Manufacturing. Survivors include: two daughters - Martha Whitaker of Coleman and Shirley Davis of Valera; four sons - Ed Eldred of Coleman, Larry Eldred of San Angelo, Mack Eldred of Ballinger and Danny Eldred of Ballinger; two sisters - Rachel Hilliard of Longmont, Colorado and Minnie Rhoades of Ballinger; two brothers - Burl Brown of Cisco and Allison Brown of Coleman; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. |

Burial will follow in the Talpa Cemetery under the direction of Rains-Seale Funeral Home of Ballinger. She was born in 1910 in Talpa and married John Samuel Hardaway at Big Lake in 1938. She was a retired school teacher and member of Hopewell Baptist Church. Survivors include: a daughter - Mary Sue Rose of Talpa; two sons - John Samuel Hardaway, Jr. and Bill Hardaway of Alpine; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. |
ROCKWOOD - Blake Williams of Rockwood died Monday, December 17, 2001 at the Memorial City Hermann Hospital in Houston. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Rockwood Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Dean officiating. Burial will follow at the Rockwood Cemetery, under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna. Family visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Friday at Henderson Funeral Home. He was born Murray Blake Williams on December 22, 1906 in Cross, Texas. Blake was reared in North Zulch, Texas where he graduated from high school. He attended Howard Payne University and received his BS from Sam Houston State and his Masters from the University of Houston. He married Wilma McIlvain in Rockwood on July 29, 1932. She preceded him in death in 1993 after sixty-one years of marriage. Blake was a teacher at the Rockwood schools, Hampshire ISD and Pasadena ISD and was principal at both Rockwood and Hampshire. Upon retirement, he returned to Rockwood in 1972 where he was a member of the Rockwood Baptist Church and Masonic Mountain Lodge #661. Survivors include: a daughter and son-in-law - Carolyn and Chris Williams of Houston; two sisters - Ruth McGill of Houston and Dorris Richardson of Hillsboro; one granddaughter; one grandson. |

Luther Earl Goodwin of Coleman, died Wednesday (December 19, 2001) at Texas State Veteran's Nursing Home in Temple. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday (December 22, 2001) at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Donald Williams officiating, assisted by Joe Hailey. Burial will follow in Coleman Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Mr. Goodwin was born September 24, 1921 in Voss, Coleman County, Texas a son of Thomas Ernest and Flora May Jones Goodwin. He was raised in Coleman County and attended schools in Coleman. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942, serving four years. On February 1, 1943, he married Mavis Jo Barnes in Coleman. He worked at the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Coleman as a mechanic for 29 years, a life-time member of the Coleman Volunter Fire Department and a member of the Elm Street Church of Christ. Mr. Goodwin is survived by his wife, Mavis Goodwin of Coleman; three sons, Larry Goodwin of Temple, Randy Goodwin of Satanta, Kansas, Kary Goodwin of Coleman; one daughter, Joann (Jodi) Pate of Haltom City, Texas; four grandchildren, Daryl Pate of Saginaw, Texas, Sheila Mitchell of Hurst, Texas, Garrett Goodwin of Temple and Derek Goodwin of Coleman; three great-grandchildren, Jordan, Josiah and Naomi Mitchell all of Hurst, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Calvillo was born January 9, 1966 in Abilene, Texas and was the daughter of Jose Guadalupe Sanchez and Julia Morales Sanchez. She grew up in Winters and graduated from Winters High School. On April 24, 1998 she married Antonio "Tony" Calvillo in Cuidad Acuna, Mexico. She moved to Coleman in 1997 and had been employed at Casa Cabana Restaurant in Winters. She was a member of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Winters and since to moving to Coleman, a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was a Crusillo. Survivors include her husband, Tony Calvillo of Coleman; one daughter, Norah Juanita Calvillo of Coleman; her parents, Jose Guadalupe and Julia Sanchez of Winters; five sisters, Yolanda Loya of Abilene, Norma Sanchez of Coleman, Monica Sanchez of Abilene, Sesilia Lugo of Winters and Esmeralda Hoyle of San Diego, California; three brothers, Jose M. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and a Baptist. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard. He was employed by the E.M.S. in Brownwood for 11 years and also worked for E.M.S. in Coleman and Brady. He married Julia Watson in 1965 in Brownwood. She married Milton Eugene Brandstetter in Coleman County in 1941. He preceded her in death in 1985. She was a retired mixer at 3-M Manufacturing; a member of Southside Baptist Church; and a lifelong resident of Brownwood. Les Dobbins, Sr., age 80, of Coleman died Thursday, December 27, 2001 at Coleman County Medical Center. Services were at 2:00 p. m. Sunday (December 30, 2001) at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Northway officiating. Burial, with military honors, followed at Coleman Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Leslie Dobbins, Sr. was born September 27, 1921 in Coleman County and was the son of the late Drew Jackson Dobbins and Dora Jones Dobbins. He grew up in the Loss Creek community and attended school at Loss Creek. On May 25, 1942 he married Christine Mitchell in Coleman. He served in the 8th Air Corp 305th Bomber Group during World War II as a radio operator and gunner on the B-17. He flew 35 misssions over Germany and occupied France and was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross. Mr. Dobbins owned and operated Dobbins Service Station in Coleman for over 50 years. He was a charter member and deacon of Bible Baptist Church. Survivors include: his wife, Christine Dobbins of Coleman; two daughters and sons-in-law, Faye and Joe Faries of Coleman and Cathye and Ted Kirby of Early; one son and daughter-in-law, Les, Jr. and Diana Dobbins of Coleman; one sister and brother-in-law, Maudie and Richard Kelley of Coleman; five grandchildren, Christina (and husband Jason) Weger of Cisco; Travis (and wife Mikki) Kirby of Brownwood, Aaron Dobbins of Coleman, Crystal Kirby of Early, and Adam Dobbins of Coleman; one great-granddaughter, Ashlyn Kirby of Brownwood. Mrs. Linda Basse, age 50, of San Antonio, Texas, died at 6:20 p. m. Thursday, December 27, 2001 in Fredericksburg. Burial will follow in the Voss Cemetery, under the direction of Walker Funeral Home. She was born August 15, 1951 in Watertown, New York to Oliver and Elizabeth Allen Jennings. She lived in El Cajon, California from 1964 to 1966. She was a graduate of Grant Hills High School and attended Crossmont College, moving to San Antonio about eight years ago where whe was a developer amd maker of custom jewelery. She was a Catholic. Survivors include her husband, Stan Basse of San Antonio, Texas; her parents, Oliver and Elizabeth Allen Jennings of Voss; and two brothers, David Jennings of Bedford, Texas and Richard Jennings of Valera, Texas. Joyce E. Smith, age 79 of El Cajon, California died December 27, 2001. Funeral services were held at El Cajon Mortuary. She was born September 26, 1922 in Santa Anna, Texas and was a graduate of Santa Anna High School. She was a homemaker for 60 years and was a member of the Hard Rockers gem and minerals club. Helen E. Carrasco, age 73 of Coleman, died Saturday, December 29, 2001 at her son's home in Garland. Funeral service will be held 10:00 a. m. Wednesday, January 2, 2002, at Primera Iglesia Bautisia Church in Coleman. A prayer service will be held 7:00 p. m. Tuesday, January 1, 2002 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Mrs. Carrasco was born August 18, 1928 in Monahans, a daughter of Porfirio Gonzales and Maria Minerva Lujan Enriquez. She was raised and attended schools in Monahans. She married Rev. W. C. Carrasco on August 29, 1946 in Monahans. She was the director of the W. M. U. for two years, known now as the Baptist Women and was a member of the Heart of Texas Spanish Baptist Association. She moved to Coleman in 1983, where she worked as a Nurse's Aide at the nursing homes and worked as a counselor for Central Texas Opportunities. She was a member of the Primera Iglesia Bautista Church. Survivors include her husband, Rev. W. C. Carrasco of Coleman; three sons, Ernesto Carrasco of Garland, Ednoi Carrasco of Houston, Eliseo Carrasco of Tyler; one daughter, Esther Carrasco of San Antonio; one sister, Stella Lujan of Tuscon, Arizona; seven grandsons; three granddaughters; one great-granddaugher on the way and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Jewel James Stearns, 95, passed away Saturday morning, December 29, 2001 in a Fort Worth area hospital. Born and raised in the Trickham area, she married Harley Stearns, who preceded her in death. BANGS: Funeral services for Elsie Jewel Mattix, 89, of Bangs were held at 2 p. m. Thursday in the Bangs First Baptist Church with Dr. Lee Evans officiating. Interment followed in the Cleveland Cemetery in Coleman County under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home. Mrs. Mattix died Monday, December 31, 2001, at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. She was born September 10, 1912 in Wise County to John Pinkman and Eliza Jane Longley Whatley. She was a seamstress and former owner and operator of a cafe. She had lived in Bangs since 1959. She married Aubrey Knox Mattix in Wise County on October 11, 1930. She was a member of the Bangs First Baptist Church. Survivors include a son John and wife Phyllis Mattix of Bangs; daughter Jannie and husband Tommy Davis of Houston; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great- great- grandchildren; two sisters, Myrtle Parsons of Bangs and Dorothy Teague of Wise County; and a number of nieces and nephews.
