H. J. Jackson, 77, prominent retired Coleman newspaper publisher and a former president of the Texas Press Association, died Friday, June 7, at Overall - Morris Memorial Hospital, following a long illness. Funeral services were held here Sunday afternoon, June 9, at 2:00 p. m., at Stevens Funeral Chapel, with Richard McDuffie, Vicar of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment was in the Coleman Cemetery. Survivors include on son, Ben F. Jackson of Harrington Park, New Jersey; one daughter, Mrs. Burton Miles of Austin; a grandson, Mile Miles of Austin; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. R. H. Dimock of Coleman. Pallbearers included Alfred Hinds, Joe Pouns, Charles F. Newton, J. V. Clare, Floyd Shelton, Robert Browning, Jean Larson and Robert Bowen. |

Mr. Jackson
had resided in Coleman since 1915, when he moved here from Sebring, Ohio
and purchased the Coleman Democrat - Voice. He operated the Coleman
newspaper until the early 1940's, when he retired. He was born December
7, 1885 in Clyde, Ohio. He attended Kenyon Military Academy at Gambrier,
Ohio. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and of St. Mark's Church.
Aside from newspapering, he had a long career of governmental work and other service. His first employment was as ticket clerk for New York Central Railroad from August 1903 to August 1904. Then, the next year he was assistant postmaster at Clyde, Ohio, then he was back with New York Central Railroad as cashier at the ticket office. In 1906, he was named assistant postmaster in the Panama Canal Zone. While in the Canal Zone, he served as district tax collector, deputy collector of revenues, worked in the Department of Laws on deportation work, settling claims of natives who were removed from the Canal Zone, served as assistant treasurer of the Canal Zone Government, and in 1914 was appointed as deputy collector, collecting ship tolls, water rentals and rentals on government property on the Pacific side. In October 1914, he purchased the Sebring, Ohio Times, which he operated until August 1915. Then, in December 1915, he purchased the Coleman Democrat - Voice. In 1934 he served as Code Administrator for NRA for smaller newspapers and printing plants in Texas, a federal post he held for a year with headquarters in Dallas. In 1936 he was elected president of the Texas Press Association. In 1940 he headed the census work for this district. While in Panama, Mr. Jackson met Miss Aimee Moore, who was employed by the government auditor's office. They were married there in 1909. She died in 1961. Both of the Jackson children were born in the Canal Zone. Mr. Jackson was born into newspapering. His father, the late Benjamin Jackson, established a newspaper in Ohio in 1870.
