Miss Addye McCulloch – 17 Year Old Coleman Girl Takes Her Own Life

Miss Addye Laurrettie McCulloch, seventeen-year-old daughter of Mrs. A. L. McCulloch of Coleman, and a granddaughter of the lamented Gen. Ben E. McCulloch of Texas, suicided at their place of residence in Coleman late in the afternoon of Thanksgiving day, Thursday, November 27.  A 32 caliber automatic pistol was the weapon used for her self-destruction, the ball entering near the right nipple, causing a profusion of blood to flow from the wound, and from which death ensued in a short time.

Miss McCulloch was alone at the home when the rash act was committed, the mother being engaged upon her duties at the Moore Cottage, where she is employed.  Thad Knox Jr., was passing the residence about 5:30 in the afternoon when he heard the discharge of a pistol within the house, which was presently followed by a cry of “Help!”  He passed around to the front door and hesitated to enter.  After hearing a second cry for help he opened the door and beheld the girl alone lying on the floor and partly supported by a trunk.  A pistol was lying on the floor.

Mr. Knox was for the moment nonplused as to what action to take.  He left the house hurriedly and gave the alarm, then returned to the room and lifted the girl from the floor in an effort to give her some assistance.  Life was then almost extinct, she was unable to speak and death ensued before others arrived on the scene.

Miss McCulloch left two sealed notes, one addressed to her mother and the other addressed to a young man with whom a courtship had existed.  The contents of the notes were not made public, except that portion wherein she stated her intention, to take her own life.

The deceased was living in her seventeenth year; was born December 7, 1896, died November 27, 1913.  She was a member of the Baptist church of Coleman and funeral services were conducted at the church Saturday afternoon, November 29, the pastor,Rev. J. J. Kellam, administering the funeral rites.
