Camp Colorado: A Decade of Frontier Defense, 1964 by Thomas Robert Havins.
 Havins says of his sources, "Data for rosters of companies that served at the installation are fragmentary.  The James Buckner Barry Papers contain two lists.
One is in the National Archives, while two are in the Texas State Library."

Company A

EARL VAN DORN — Born in Mississippi Sept. 8, 1820; appointed to West Point 1838 and graduated 1842; infantry officer during Mexican War and rose to rank of major; captain 2nd Cavalry March 3, 1855; major June 28, 1860; resigned and entered Confederate Army; major-general 1862; assassinated in 1863.

WILLIAM J. H. WHITE — Born in Washington, D. C.; appointed from civilian status as assistant surgeon March 12, 1850; major and surgeon April 12, 1862; killed in Battle of Sharpsburg Sept. 17, 1862.

GEORGE B. COSBY — Born in Kentucky; appointed to West Point 1848; 2nd Lt. July 1, 1852; 1st Lt. May 17, 1856; captain May 9, 1861; resigned to enter Confederate Army May 10, 1861.

A. PARKER PORTER — Born in Pennsylvania; appointed to West Point 1852; 2nd Lt. 1856; 1st Lt. May 20, 1861; remained in Union Army and rose to rank of major.

EDMUND KIRBY SMITH — Born in Florida; appointed to West Point 1841; 2nd Lt. 1845; 1st Lt. Aug. 22, 1846; captain 2nd Cavalry March 3, 1855; major Jan. 31, 1861; resigned to enter Confederate Army April 6,1861; rose to rank of lieutenant-general.

WALTER H. JENIFER — Born in Maryland; appointed from civilian status 1st Lt., 3rd Dragoons April 9, 1847; captain July 16, 1847; retired 31, 1849; appointed 1st Lt., 2nd Cavalry March 3, 1855; resigned to enter Confederate Army April 30, 1861.

CHARLES T. ALEXANDER — Appointed from Arkansas as 1st Lt. and assistant surgeon Oct. 1, 1856; captain Oct. 1, 1861; major and surgeon on Feb. 9, 1863; lieutenant-colonel March 13, 1865

FITZHUGH LEE — Born in Virginia; appointed to West Point 1852; 2nd Lt., 2nd Cavalry July 1, 1856; 1st. Lt., March 31, 1861; resigned to enter Confederate Army May 21, 1861; rose to rank of brigadier-general.

JOHN B. HOOD — Born in Tennessee; appointed to West Point 1849; 2nd Lt., July 1, 1853; transferred to 2nd Cavalry March 3, 1855; 1st Lt., Jan., 1859; resigned to enter Confederate Army April 16, 1861; rose to rank of lieutenant-general.

JOSEPH H. McARTHUR — Born in Missouri; appointed to West Point 1845; 2nd Lt., July 1,1849; 1st Lt., 2nd Cavalry March 3, 1855; captain June 1, 1860; retired from United States Army with rank of major Sept. 25, 1863.

THEODORE O’HARA — Born in Kentucky; appointed captain of volunteers June 26, 1846; disbanded Oct. 16, 1848; appointed captain 2nd Cavalry March 3, 1855; resigned Dec. 1,1856; entered Confederate Army from Alabama May, 1861 and rose to rank of brigadier-general.

NATHAN G. EVANS — Born in South Carolina; appointed 2nd Lt. from civilian status July 1, 1848; 1st Lt., 2nd Cavalry March 3, 1855; captain May 1, 1856; resigned to enter Confederate Army Feb. 27, 1861.

CHARLES W. PHIFER — Born in Tennessee; appointed 2nd Lt. 2nd Cavalry from civilian status March 3, 1855; 1st Lt., Feb. 22, 1861; resigned to enter Confederate Army April, 1861; rose to rank of colonel in charge of a brigade.

JOHN T. SHAAFF — Born in Washington, D. C. Appointed to West Point 1847; 2nd Lt. Inf. July 1, 1851; transferred to 2nd Cavalry March 3, 1855; 1st Lt. May 1, 1856; resigned to enter Confederate Army Feb. 22, 1861.

RICHARD W. JOHNSON — Born in Kentucky; appointed to West Point 1845; 2nd Lt. 1849; 1st Lt. 2nd Cavalry March 3, 1855; captain Dec. 1, 1856; served with Union forces in Tenn.; rose to rank of major-general; retired Oct. 12, 1867.

Company K

CHARLES J. WHITING — Born in Massachusetts; appointed to West Point from Maine 1831; 2nd Lt. July 17, 1835; resigned May 31, 1836; appointed captain 2nd Cavalry March 3, 1855; transferred to 5th Cavalry Aug. 3, 1861; major July 17, 1862; dismissed Nov. 3, 1863; restored Aug. 3, 1866 with rank of major; retired as lieutenant-colonel Dec. 15, 1870.

JAMES P. MAJOR — Born in Missouri; appointed to West Point 1852; 2nd Lt. July 1, 1856; resigned to enter Confederate Army March 21, 1861.


TEXAS TROOPS

COLONEL HENRY E. McCULLOCH — Born in Rutherford County, Tennessee Dec. 16, 1816; emigrated to Texas 1835 and settled at Gonzales; served as sheriff and lieutenant in militia company in many engagements against Indians; member of state legislature; appointed colonel by Committee on Public Safety Feb., 1861, and ordered to seize northwestern frontier posts; elected colonel Texas Mounted Regiment April, 1861; entered Confederate service and rose to rank of brigadier-general.

COLONEL JAMES M. NORRIS — Born in South Carolina in 1820; came to Texas in 1840; practicing lawyer at Gatesyule in 1858; delegate to the Secession Convention 1861; member of the Committee on Public Safety; appointed colonel of Texas Mounted Regiment by Governor Lubbock in 1862.

COLONEL J. E. McCORD — Born in Abbeyville, South Carolina, July 4, 1834; moved to Texas in 1853; merchant at Prairie Lea; close friend of H. E. McCulloch, who urged him as a delegate to the Secession Convention; appointed major in Norris Regiment 1862; advanced to lieutenant-colonel; appointed colonel to state troops in 1863; transferred to Confederate service in 1864; surveyed lands in Coleman County prior to war and returned to the county in 1879; engaged in ranching and banking.

LIEUTENANT-COLONEL JAMES BUCKNER BARRY — Born in North Carolina Dec. 16, 1821; came to Texas in 1845; enlisted in Texas Ranger Battalion in Mexican War; settled in Navarro County in 1849; served county as sheriff; moved to Bosque county in 1856; lieutenant frontier company 1861; promoted to captain Feb. 25, 1861; major Norris Regiment 1862; Lt.-Col. McCord’s Regiment 1863; commander Confederate Frontier Battalion 1864 to end of the war.

Frost’s Company

THOMAS C. FROST — Born in Alabama 1834; came to Comanche, Texas, 1856; first lawyer in the county; lieutenant of militia 1858; delegate to Secession Convention 1861; appointed captain Feb. 25, 1861, and commander at Camp Colorado; lieutenant-colonel McCulloch’s Regiment April, 1861; entered Confederate service as colonel; moved to San Antonio after the Civil War and engaged in mercantile business and in banking.

JAMES M. HOLMSLEY — lst Lt. Frost’s Company Feb. 25, 1861; captain Co. G, Texas Mounted Regiment and commanding officer at Camp Colorado; engaged in general mercantile business in Comanche after the war.

JOHN NICHOLS — Resident of Comanche County; 2nd Lt. Feb. 25, 1861.

Company B

WILLIAM A. PITTS — Born 1831; resident of Hays County 1861; organized Co. B, Texas Mounted Regiment, from men of Hays, Guadaloupe, and Bexar counties; entered Confederate service in 1862; resided in Austin after the Civil War.

WILLIAM A. WALLACE — Born 1837; resident of Hays County in 1861; 1st Lt. Co. B at muster in San Antonio April 20, 1861.

BEN E. BENTON — Born 1840; resident of Hays County 1861; 2nd Lt. Company B at muster in San Antonio April 20, 1861.

CLEM R. JONES — Born 1838; resident of Hays County in 1861; 2nd Lt. when mustered at San Antonio, April 20, 1861.

Company G

JAMES M. HOLMSLEY — (See Frost’s Company).

LEVI GOODRICH — Came to Brown County 1859; school teacher and surveyor; enlisted in Frost’s Company and present at the surrender of Camp Colorado; sergeant in same company; elected 1st Lt. Co. G, April, 1861; entered Confederate service July, 1864; studietl law after the war; served three terms as district judge at Marlin, Texas.

JOHN M. FROST — Elected 2nd Lt. Co. G, April, 1861.

LEONIDAS PRICE — Elected 2nd Lt. Co. G, April, 1861. Company I

JAMES J. CALLAN — Born in Ireland 1834; came with his parents to the United States in 1842 and resided in Washington, D. C. for twelve years; emigrated to Throckmorton county, Texas, in 1855; young Callan arrived in Coleman County in 1859; organized Coleman County Minute Men and elected captain July 1, 1861; county commissioner Brown county 1860-1861; elected captain Co. I, McCord’s Regiment March, 1863; moved to Menard County after the war; returned to Coleman 1880 and founded the “Coleman Voice.”

T. C. WRIGHT — Resident of Comanche county 1861; elected 1st Lt. Co. I, March, 1863.

J. H. CHRISMAN — Resident of Gatesville in 1861; served as sergeant Collier’s Company, Norris Regiment 1862; elected 2nd Lt. Co. I, March, 1863.

J. M. CHANDLER —  Resident of Hamilton county in 1860; 2nd Lt. Co. I, March, 1863.


CONFEDERATE TROOPS

Fossett’s Battalion - Company A

HENRY S. FOSSETT — Born in Maine 1817; emigrated to Texas 1852; elected captain Co. A, March, 1864; appointed battalion commander by General McCulloch June 1, 1864; practiced law at Meridian after the war.

G. D. GREER — Born in Georgia 1822; resident of Parker County and engaged in farming and stockraising both before and after the war; 1st Lt. Co. A, March, 1864.

PHILIP HOWARD — Born in Kentucky in 1813; emigrated to Jack County in 1854; removed to Erath County in 1860 and engaged in raising horses and mules; elected 2nd Lt. Co. A, March, 1864.

A. H. BOYD, M. D. — Born in Kentucky in 1824; emigrated to Milam county, Texas, in 1848; removed to Comanche in 1860; elected 2nd Lt. Co. A, March, 1864; practiced medicine in Palo Pinto County after the war.

Company B

G. B. COOKE — Resident of San Saba County, where he was county clerk and county judge; elected captain Co. B, March, 1864; returned to San Saba after the war; served as a member of the state Constitutional Convention in 1875.

MARION M. CALLAN — Born in Washington, D. C., 1844; brother of Captain J. J. Callan; came to Camp Colorado in 1860; elected 2nd Lt. Co. B, March, 1864.

FRANK M. CROSS — Born in Mississippi in 1834; came to Milam County in 1846; settled at Cora, in Comanche County, in 1856; enlisted in Captain Collier’s company, Norris Regiment, 1862; enlisted in Co. I 1863; elected 2nd Lt. Co. B, March, 1864; resided in Comanche and Brown counties after the war; his “Early Days in Central Texas” has become a classic.

JAMES D. MULKEY — Born in eastern Oklahoma; emigrated to San Saba in 1857; noted Indian fighter before and after the Civil War; elected 2nd Lt. Co. B, March, 1864.
