Fiesta de la Paloma Planned for September 30
In Lieu of County Fair

A new type of celebration, in lieu of the annual county fair, has been announced by Chamber of Commerce president Ross L. Jones. It will be Coleman County’s Fiesta de la Paloma (dove festival), and is scheduled for Saturday, September 30.  Jones explains that Chamber officials have for some time thought that new ideas and new attractions were needed for the annual affair.  Dove season is a popular time in the county, with excellent hunting, and the decision was made to select that name and even have a world championship dove cook-off.

Many events are included in the plans as follows:

•  gun show or display with lectures or demonstrations.
•  skeet or trap shoot, with demonstration by an expert, and competition with prizes or trophies.
•  beauty contest to select a queen for the event.
•  "almost anything goes" contests, with six to eight teams to compete.
•  horse show as has been operated in the past.
•  skateboard contest, probably in the dance pavilion.
•  boxtng matches, as in the past.
•  flea market and community garage sales. Each community over the county will be encouraged to participate.
•  archery demonstration plans are in the making.
•  exhibit of arts and crafts in the women’s division.
•  art exhibit and sale plans being studied.
•  shell loading demonstration, using shotgun shells and rifle shells.
•  wildlife exhibit.
•  pinata breaking planned for the children several times during the day.
•  commercial booths will be available, operated more on a voluntary basis this year, rather than the hard sell as in the past.
•  food booths
•  bands and other entertainment.
Committees are currently being selected for the festival, and new and different ideas may be advanced from time to time.  Jones encourages everyone to have a part in this first “Fiesta” and help develop it into an event which will attract visitors from all over the state.
