Coleman High School Football History

Coleman, Texas

A Short History of Texas UIL Football Conferences and Districts
by Ralph Terry

Coleman High School began playing football in 1910.  Texas high school football under the guidance of the University Interscholastic League began to play to a state championship in the 1920 season and has continued in much the same manner since.

There was some confusion from 1922 to 1925 when Conferences A and B merged at the state playoff level.  Beginning in 1924, the football championship was divided into Conferences A and B.  There were 8 sections in A, 16 sections in B.  This required B to play to the bi-sectional level before being matched with A.

Beginning in 1926, Conference A alone played to a state championship.  Conference B play ended at the bi-district level.

Conference B moved up to the regional level beginning in 1928, after which the sport stayed more or less the same until 1939, when the whole system was revised.

In 1939, Conferences AA, A, and B were set up.  Conference AA played to state, A played to regional, and B to bi-district.  That was the arrangement through 1945, but beginning in 1946, Conference B moved up a notch and played to the regional level.

In 1948 there was even more confusion.  The City Conference was formed as a separate group, taking several schools out of Conference AA; and Conference A started playing to a state championship.

A new system got underway in 1951 after the demise of the City Conference.  This method called for Conferences 4-A, 3-A, 2-A, and A to play to a state championship, and Conference B to play to a regional level.  Conference B began to play to a state championship in 1972.

The most recent classification change was made in 1980 when all Conferences were advanced up, making AAAAA, AAAA, AAA, AA, and A and Conference B being dropped.  Schools under a certain enrollment in Conference A could still field a six-man team.  A change that began in the 1982 season: the top two teams in each district advanced to the finals; the winner to play second place in its opposing district, thus adding an extra game to the play-offs and also making it possible to win a state championship after losing district.

In 1990, a change was made by UIL rules to allow the top three teams in a district to advance into the post-district playoffs.

One thing to keep in mind when looking over these records and scores of the past...many towns once had a much larger or smaller population than today, and their schools might be even larger, drawing from a more rural population.  Not every town had a football team or anything that remotely resembled a football field of today.  Games were played with any team with which a game could be arranged.  An interesting item that you may notice while looking over these records: In the early days of high school football, post season games were often played even after a district champion was decided, even if your team was not the district winner!
