Background for the Research of
Coleman High School Football History
by Ralph Terry

Since my high school years at Coleman High School, I have been actively involved in photography.  Through those same years, I was very interested in local Coleman and Coleman County history.  I studied hard and became a photographer, receiving my bachelors degree in photography in 1969 from Sam Houston State University.  At that time, I had no idea I would one day be back in Coleman earning a living in photography, and developing a deep interest for our local history - county, city, and school.  My beginnings in local school history began as an annual staff photographer in 1963, but my love for sports statistics and records began under Jack Baucom that same year when I started to keep basketball books and charts for the basketball team.  This work continued until my graduation from CHS in 1965.  After returning to Coleman and purchasing Hugh Capps Studio in 1974, I again began to do the statistical work for Jack in 1977 and have continued to do so until about 1990.  Methods of record keeping have changed a great deal over the years, as have the games themselves.  This sometimes accounts for new records being set, due to the various rules being changed.

My interest in putting together together past history about the sports records of Coleman High School began about 1978, while watching Reggie Childress make CHS basketball history.  I began to wonder how Reggie's records compared to past basketball players at Coleman High School.  After a short amount of research, I found that no one had ever bothered to put down any kind of definitive record on any of the sports played at Coleman High School.  So I begin to read old annuals, school newspapers, city newspapers; talk to past players, coaches, local residents; I studied old trophies, footballs, and any other CHS sports mementoes that I could find to make a complete as possible record of what has gone on at CHS since its beginning.  Of course, my main interest at first was in basketball - but I quickly realized that much more had been written about football and that someday I would very likely do another book on football, so rather than trace the same steps several times, I collected all sports information that I could find.

This website contains a huge amount of material, collected from these many sources.  There are many missing parts before it will be complete ... by giving incomplete information, I can hope to add information from those who know.  There are some areas of these football records that I have not even touched upon ... such as individual records (those take many hours to compile).  As time goes by, I will revise this information, adding the new teams and players as they make history at Coleman High School; and I will also add new information on the older teams as I uncover it.  In the future, I plan to add photographs of the teams, as I hold the copyright to most of the CHS team pictures from 1947 to date plus some other teams prior to 1947.  If, as you study this data, you see any errors or have any information (old programs, clippings, etc) to add that will make this information more complete, please let me know.  Everyone reading it in future years will appreciate it.  One regret I have, is that I have been unable to find very many records of the football and basketball teams of Humphrey High School, the Coleman Negro School that existed prior to integration in 1965.

At any rate, this is what I have found thus far.  I hope you enjoy reading and recalling the times when this information was the present, and I feel that some of this data will settle many agruments in years to come.
