Coleman Wins
Homecoming Game
By Brenda Simmons If you were late to the game Friday night you missed one of the most exciting two minutes of Coleman Bluecat football ever. Not only did the Bluecats score twice in the first two and a half minutes of play against the Early Longhorns, but they held the Longhorns to a scoreless game for Homecoming 2013. The Bluecats received the opening kickoff of the game, and with 10:45 left in the 1st quarter, Jaquan Hemphill took a Cord Norris pass across the goal line for the Bluecats’ first score. P. J. Hammonds carried for the 2 point conversion to give the Bluecats an early 8 – 0 lead. A Longhorn fumble on the following kickoff was recovered by Bluecat Justin Brixey to give possession back to the Bluecats. With only 1:07 off the game clock, Norris connected with Thomas Hurtado in the end zone to increase the Bluecat lead to 14. The Bluecat defense kept the Longhorns from scoring throughout the rest of the half while the offense put two more on the scoreboard in the 2nd quarter. Hurtado carried for the score with 8:27 left in the 2nd quarter and David Cupps kicked the extra point. On the next Bluecat possession, Mason Burkey took a Norris pass to the end zone to add 6 more to the Bluecat score. The score at the half was Bluecats 28, Longhorns 0. The second half of the game was a battle of defenses, but the Bluecats got one more touchdown in the 3rd quarter. Hurtado took a Norris pass for long yardage and the score to give the Bluecats their game ending total of 34 points. Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Brad Ballard said, “It was another outstanding job by our defense. We have told the kids all along that we can bend but not break and they did a good job of it. Daulton Allen did an excellent job and played well for coming off only one day of full practice because of an ankle injury. Freshman Riley Harris, moved up to Varsity this week, really stepped up to spot play for us and was not afraid to do what he was asked to do. Royce Harris did a really good job of putting pressure on their quarterback and pursuing the ball. Offensively, Cord Norris had a great game. He threw for 4 touchdowns with nearly 300 yards passing and had 75 yards rushing. Thomas Hurtado also had a good game and did a good job at making guys miss him on tackles in open spaces. But, we do have to improve on penalties.” The Bluecats travel to Bangs on Friday to take on the Dragons. Coach Ballard said, “Bangs is coming off a big win against Goldthwaite. Our kids look forward to this game all year long. No doubt, the Dragons are well coached. We must play extremely well to beat them at their place.”
