Coleman, Texas

Soaring Start

August 30 West Texas football notes

Coach Rusty Buzzard has coached at Class 5A Pflugerville and 3A power Cuero.  A year ago, he guided 2A Yorktown to a school-record 10 victories and the regional semifinals, the program's deepest postseason run since 1991.  For all the high-profile schools he has coached at, and for all the success his teams have attained, it was taking over as the head coach at 2A Coleman that seemed like the right fit.  ''It's like coming home,'' said Buzzard, a native of Santa Anna, a graduate of Howard Payne University in Brownwood and a former assistant coach at Bangs.

To that end, Friday night was a happy homecoming.  Paced by quarterback Austin Buzzard's three rushing touchdowns, Coleman used a strong second half to rally past Brady 29-14. The Bluecats trailed 14-7 at halftime before outscoring Brady 22-0 in the second half.

Brady defeated Coleman 54-0 in 2004.  ''The big difference is we're gaining some confidence in ourselves,'' said the elder Buzzard, who took over a Coleman team that finished 3-9 and reached the playoffs in 2004. ''We've stressed doing the little things right.  ''The kids believe in the system, but they hadn't been tested.  They got to see that what we're teaching them is working.''
