Coleman Varsity, JV and
Freshman Girls Sweep Eula in Season Openers
The Coleman girls kicked off the 2005-2006 basketball season the right way Tuesday night, with varsity, JV and freshman wins over the Lady Pirates of EuIa. FRESHMAN Coach Erwin’s freshman Bluekatt team made an amazing defensive stand as they held the Eula freshman girls to only 12 total points in their 39-12 victory. Eula’s highest scoring period was the second, during which they put up only four points. The Lady Pirates only had two to three points per period to show for the remainder of the game. Contributing to the Bluekatt scoring effort were Sonya Cruz with 14 points, followed by Eden Duquette with nine, Becca Baker with eight, Shelby DeLeon with four, Corina Landaverde with two, and Tara Brixey and Audrey Cassellberry with one a piece. JUNIOR VARSITY The JV Bluekatt team, led by Coach Simmons, trounced Eula’s JV by a solid 19 points in the 54-35 victory Tuesday evening. At the end of the first period, the Katts led 12-10, but Coleman held Eula to only three points in the second period, while adding 15 points for themselves. This gave Coleman a commanding lead from which Eula could not recover. Nicole Heath led the Bluekatt scoring with 16 points, followed by Meagan Dunman with 14, Tabitha Terrell and Lexy Horsak with six each, Sarah Lofton and Cheyene Turner with four each, and Sonya Cruz and Peyton Saverance with two each. VARSITY Head Coach Barbara Cox should be pleased with her Bluekatt varsity team, as they toppled Eula’s varsity 51-39. Coleman came out hot in the first period, outscoring the Lady Pirates 19-6. The Pirates then outscored the Katts 17-16 in the second period, but any hopes of a comeback were extinguished as the two teams were exactly tied in their third and fourth period scoring. Leading the scoring for the Bluekatts were LaRae Villarreal with an impressive 20 points, followed by Kaneesha Graves with 10 points, Elizabeth Lindsay with 6, Kamber Royce with 4, Sydney Reynolds and Tedye Hambright with 3 each, Kelsey Hanson and Caitlin Hail with two each, and Jennifer Hubbard with one.
