BY MICHAEL AUTRY

The Coleman girls’ varsity and JV basketball teams hosted the Anson Lady Tigers Tuesday night in non-district play.  Both teams celebrated wins, with the Varsity game being a real nail-biter.

JUNIOR VARSITY

The JV Bluekatt team walloped Anson’s JV by 31 points in the 47-16 victory.  Coleman started out hot with an 18-8 first quarter.  The Katts then managed to hold Anson scoreless in the second period, while increasing their lead to 17 points.  The Lady Tigers only were allowed eight second-half points while Coleman continued to rack up points of their own.

Meagan Dunnam led the scoring efforts for Coleman with an astounding 19 total points, followed by Sarah Lofton with an impressive 13, Tabitha Terrell with five, Rene Salas with four, and Nancy Cruz, Lexy Horsak and Cheyenne Turner adding two each.

The Coleman JV girls will travel to Eula for a tournament starting tonight (Nov 17).

VARSITY

A fourth period rally by the Bluekatt varsity team gave just the boost needed to overtake Anson in the 69-67 victory Tuesday night.  Coleman came out with guns blazing as they outscored the Lady Tigers 22-17 in the first period.  A 16-16 second period took the Katts into the half with their five-point lead, but a problematic third period allowed Anson to outscore Coleman 20-11.  With a four-point deficit at hand, the Bluekatts rallied on offense and defense to hold Anson to only 14 fourth period points, while tallying up 20 of their own, giving Coleman the two-point victory.

Leading the scoring for Coleman was Kelsey Hanson with an impressive 19 points, followed by Caitlin Hail with 14, LaRae Villarreal with 13, Kaneesha Graves with eight, Elizabeth Lindsay with six, Jennifer Hubbard with four, Shaley Villegas with three, and Tedye Hambright with two.
