McMurry Takes Indian Relays ABILENE,
Texas (March 19, 2004) - McMurry won its own Indian Relays with 288 points
and several Indians qualified for the national championships on Friday
at Indian Stadium. Abilene Christian (96) finished in second place,
followed by Sul Ross State (30), Dallas (27) and Cisco Junior College (20).
McMurry had a total of 10 qualifiers for the NCAA Division III Outdoor
Track and Field Championships in Decatur, Illinois, including provisionals
Reginald Latimer in the 100 meter dash (10.79 seconds), LaTanya Felder
in the 100 meters (12.22), both men’s (41.74) and women’s (47.77) 400 relay
teams, Quentin Lankford in the pole vault (4.73 meters), Rachel Rothermel
in the discus (43.62m), Jerrod Cook in the hammer (55.83m), and automatics
Darcell Edwards
in both the long jump (5.96m) and triple jump (12.17m), Cody Brotherton
in the shot put (17.64m).
McMurry Sweeps ASC Weekly Awards RICHARDSON,
Texas (March 16, 2004) - The McMurry track and field program has swept
the season's first American Southwest Conference weekly awards, with the
league office Tuesday naming Darcell Edwards
and Cody Brotherton as the women’s and men's athlete of the week.
A senior out of Coleman High School, Edwards earned two all-America citations
and won a national event title in her first trip to the NCAA Division III
Indoor Track and Field Championships (March 12-13) in Whitewater, Wisconsin.
Edwards won the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 71/4 inches and finished
in third place in the triple jump with 39-1/2.
Tribe Trio Named All-America WHITEWATER,
Wis. (March 14) - Three McMurry student-athletes received all-America accolades
on Saturday's final day of the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field
Championships at Kachel Fieldhouse on the Wisconsin-Whitewater campus.
Junior Cody Brotherton, the defending national champion in the shot-put,
had to settle for third place this season after a throw of 55 feet, 5 inches.
He is a two-time indoor All-American in the event. Sophomore Ryder
Peacock jumped 6-6 in the high jump to finish seventh, claiming all-America
status for the second straight year. Senior Darcell
Edwards, who already claimed all-America honors
with a win in the long jump on Friday, wound up third in the triple jump
(39-01/2) for her second all-America citation at this year's NCAA Championships.
In the team standings, Wisconsin-LaCrosse won the men's division with 70
points while McMurry finished in a four-way tie for 24th-place with eight.
On the women's side, Wisconsin-Oshkosh won with 56.5 points and the Lady
Indians were T-10th with 16.
Edwards Wins NCAA Long Jump WHITEWATER,
Wis. (March 12) - McMurry senior Darcell Edwards
claimed her first indoor title of any kind on Friday at the NCAA Division
III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Kachel Fieldhouse on the Wisconsin-Whitewater
campus. With four outdoor crowns (three in the triple jump, one long
jump) under her belt, Edwards leaped 18 feet and 71/4 inches to win the
long jump over Kammie Holt of Washington (Missouri), who had 18-41/4.
Edwards came into the NCAA Meet as the nation's top-ranked competitor in
both the indoor long and triple jump. Edwards made the finals after
placing only seventh overall in the prelims (top nine advance), jumping
17-51/2 for fourth in her flight. But she saved her best performance
in the finals, improving by almost a foot.
Brotherton Leads NCAA Charge ABILENE,
Texas (March 9) - McMurry will conclude its indoor season at the NCAA Division
III Track and Field Championships Friday (10:30 a.m.) and Saturday (10
a.m.) in Whitewater, Wisconsin. The UW-Whitewater Warhawks will serve
as the host team and the Kachel Fieldhouse as the venue. Representing
McMurry will be seniors Jerrod Cook (weight throw) of Abilene Cooper HS
and Darcell Edwards
(triple, long jumps) of Coleman High School, junior Cody Brotherton (shot-put)
of Stratford High School and sophomore Ryder Peacock (high jump) of Woodson
High School.
McMurry Records Impressive Results NORMAN, Okla. (February 22) - The McMurry Indians posted some impressive indoor track and field performances this weekend in Norman, Oklahoma. On Saturday at the Oklahoma Sooner Invitational, Cody Brotherton captured first place in the shot-put at 55 feet and 93/4 inches for a new meet record, competing against a field of mostly-NCAA Division I athletes. Jerrod Cook was second in the weight throw at 57-7. Matt Brown finished in sixth place in the 800 meters with a time of 1 minute, 58.03 seconds. On the women's side for McMurry, Darcell Edwards was third in the triple jump at 40-1 1/4 and fourth in the long jump at 17-91/2. And Samantha Burgess broke her school record in the 800 meters at 2:28.45, eclipsing the previous record of 2:29.53 she set several weeks ago in Lubbock. Friday's late results from Oklahoma Christian included Brotherton taking first place in the shot-put with an even-better throw of 57-63/4, setting a McMurry indoor record; Adam Davidson was fourth in the 60 meter hurdles with an 8.91 time, a McMurry record; Ryder Peacock won first place in the high jump at 6-8; Ty Gerner placed first in the pole vault at 15-0; and Brown was fifth in the 3000 meters at 9:04.48, beating Derek Riedel's McMurry record by 16 seconds. And on the women's side, Courtney Chaney was third in the weight throw at 43-9 but broke her school record for the third time this season; Edwards was first in both the long (19-3 1/2, a McMurry record) and triple jumps (39-7 1/2); Samantha Burgess established a school mark in the mile at 5:42.43; and Rachel Rothermel won the shot put at 37-10. Texas (February 7) - McMurry's third straight trip here to the Texas Tech
Athletic Training Center proved to be the Indians' best effort so far during
the indoor season, highlighted by four team records set at the Red Raider
Invitational on Saturday. The women's squad garnered three as Abilene
High School product Sarah Reyna ran a 21-minute and 26.23-second time in
the 5,000 meters to place eighth; senior Darcell
Edwards leaped 40 feet, 2 3/4 inches in the
triple jump for second place; and freshman Samantha Burgess had a 2:29.53
clocking in the 800 run for ninth.
Chaney Sets Mark, Cook Wins LUBBOCK,
Texas (January 31) - Courtney Chaney set a school indoor record and Jerrod
Cook won the men's weight throw, highlighting McMurry's results at the
Red Raider Classic Saturday at the Athletic Training Center. Chaney
placed seventh in the women's weight throw with a heave of 43 feet and
7 1/4 inches, but broke her own school mark by more than a foot that she
set just last week at the Red Raider All-Comers meet. Cook, meanwhile,
won first place in the event in the men's division, besting a field that
included seven Division I and II athletes; he threw 56-11/4. Other
top performances by the Indians included Ryder Peacock (3rd place-high
jump) and Darcell Edwards
(3rd place-triple jump and 5th place-high jump).
Edwards, Peacock Shine in Opener LUBBOCK,
Texas (January 24) - Led by two All-Americans, the McMurry indoor track
teams had a solid season debut Friday night at the 2004 Red Raider All-Comers
meet here at the Texas Tech Athletic Training Center. Senior Darcell
Edwards, seeded second after the preliminaries,
won the women's triple jump with a leap of 11.95 meters, besting a finals
field that included four NCAA Division I and II competitors. She
also took fourth place in the long jump at 5.41. Edwards is the three-time
defending triple jump champion for non-scholarship Division III.
On the men's side, sophomore Ryder Peacock led the Indians with a third-place
showing in the high jump at 2.07, the best non-Division I performance.
Peacock earned all-America honors at the 2003 NCAA III Indoor Championships
as a freshman. Senior All-American Jerrod Cook had the other men's
top five finish, going 17.12 in the weight throw.
Tribe Faces Top-Flight Schedule ABILENE, Texas (December 8) - McMurry head track and field coach Barbara Crousen has announced the Indians' 2003-04 schedule for the indoor and outdoor seasons. Indoor competition begins Jan. 23 at the Red Raider All-Comers in Lubbock and ends March 12-13 at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Champion-ships in Whitewater, Wisconsin. The Indians also will be competing in meets at Texas Tech, Oklahoma, South Plains College and Howard Payne. The men's squad will seek to improve its sixth-place finish at the national meet, the Indians highest finish ever. Shot-put champion Cody Brotherton, weight thrower Jerrod Cook and high jumper Ryder Peacock were all-Americans in their respective events. The outdoor season gets under way March 19 with the Indian Relays, McMurry's only home meet of the year. The Indians also will compete at meets hosted by Abilene Christian, Angelo State, Tarleton State, Texas, Texas-Arlington and Wayland Baptist. McMurry will seek its sixth consecutive crowns in both the women's and men's divisions of the American Southwest Conference Championships, which will be held at Mississippi College on April 23-24. The Division III Outdoor Championships will take place May 27-29 at a site to be determined. Brotherton duplicated his indoor shot-put title and Darcell Edwards helped the women's team to 13th-place by winning national championships in the long jump and triple jump. "We have put together a schedule that will challenge our student-athletes each week and help prepare them for the ASC Championships and NCAA meet," Crousen said. "We expect to have another fine season." |
