Something About Oretha .....

"Oretha Jordan is my cousin.  She married Jerry Jordan while still at Coleman High School.  She is shown in the cap and gown graduation group picture with only the last name of Jordan, but not in the individual photos.  Jerry is now (2006) minister of the Faith Deliverance Church in Abilene." (Nina Childress, June 2006.)

"Upon leaving Coleman Sept. 1967 my husband Jerry Jordan (Coleman Humphrey High School graduate 1964) and our 3 year old son Aaron moved to Abilene, Texas.  October 1967 we bought our current house, giving birth to our son Ricky Jordan (Downs Syndrom, Coleman Hospital February 1968), birth to our 2 daughters: Bridget Jordan, February 1971, and Alicia Jordan, April 1974 (Hendricks Hospital - Abilene).

I worked from 1969 to 1980 at Clarks Dept. Store, Aileen's Sewing factory, and Abilene State School.  In 1974 I began a few class at CJC (Clyde campus).  1980 began working as a Paraprofessional Special Education Aide with Abilene ISD at Bonham Elementary School.  Enrolled at McMurry College (1989) while working continuously with Abilene ISD.  Graduated Spring III; began teaching Sp. Ed. at Taylor Elementary School fall 1994, where in 2005, I was chosen Teacher of the Year for our Taylor Campus.  I will begin my 27th year with Abilene ISD at Taylor as an Inclusion Teacher.

My husband of 43 years (July 29, 2005) who has been my pastor for 20 years at Faith Deliverance Community here in Abilene and I am very proud of our children and their spouses and of course our 10 wonderful grandchildren and one adorable great granddaughter.

I give all glory, honor, and praises to God almighty for allowing me to achieve the success I have today.  I am a cancer survivor for over 5 years, heart impairment survivor since 2004/05.  I continue on in what I do as a testimony to my Lord and savior.  I have been blessed to work with the African American Breast Cancer Task Force.

My cousins in Coleman, Howard and Nina Childress have always been my source of encourgement and assistance in many ways, our grandparents the late Lucy and Louis Richardson, I thank them from the bottom of my heart.  I also wish to thank our Church Mother 94 year old Ocie Lee Herring (Holloway - Mitchell - Coleman), who has been in my life since I was 2 years old - a Special Thanks for everything especially spiritually above all.  Many Abilene ISD employees were instrumental in encouraging me to reach this goal; as well as an English teacher that I had at dear ole Coleman High (Mrs. Maurine Burroughs), and the R.T. Caperton family.  (Oretha Jordan, July 2006.)
