Aubrey Lee "Rusty" Evans, 89

Aubrey Lee "Rusty" Evans, 89, died November 19, 2006, in Kremmling, Colorado.  Services were held December 2, 2006  at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Kremmling with interment at Kremmling Cemetery.  Memorial donations in Rusty’s name can be made to either The Colorado Cattleman’s Association, 8833 Ralston Road, Arvada, Colorado 80002 or Cliffview Assisted Living Center, P. O. Box 1119, Kremmling, Colorado 80459.

He was born September 26, 1917, near Coleman, Texas to Mayme and Roy Evans.  His dad died when Rusty was eight years old leaving his mom to raise Rusty and his three younger sisters.  Rusty attended school in Coleman, Texas, graduating in 1935.  He then went to work for his uncle on his ranch for fifteen dollars per month plus board.  He came to Kremmling March 29, 1939.  Rusty said his 1927 Model A Ford car used more oil than gas on the trip.  Rusty had a job waiting for him at Fred DeBerard's Peak Ranch riding in the summer and feeding cattle in the winter.  In 1940 he delivered a load of bulls for DeBerard’s to Swenson Ranch in Texas riding in the boxcar on the rail with the bulls.

Rusty married Clara McMahon in Steamboat Springs November 30, 1941.  They were living at the Jones Ranch of DeBerard’s then.  They worked for F. A. Fields and Sons of Kremmling for two years where Rusty was herdsman, showing cattle at the Denver Stock Show.  During the summer they lived at the cow camp at Mule Creek on the Williams Fork.  In the spring of 1943 they leased the Hermosa Ranch at Parshall from J. C. Miller.  Later they partnered on the ranch with Clarence Reiff, buying it in 1952.  It was here that they raised their two sons, Blaine and Rod.  They sold the ranch in 1968 and leased the Harry Morris Ranch in Granby and the Just and Snow Mountain Ranch in Tabernash.  In 1980 Rusty and Clara leased the Soap Creek Ranch in North Park where they ranched until 1991 when they retired near Walden.  Rusty was a member of the North Park Stockgrowers, Middle Park Stockgrowers (president three years), A.S.C.S. committee (president two years), Soil Conservation Board, Middle Park Hereford Association (secretary/treasurer 20 years), American Hereford Association, Colorado Cattleman’s Association and American National Cattleman’s Association.  He helped organize and was president of the Hot Sulphur Springs and Parshall Fire District for several years and also the Williams Fork Telephone Company.  Rusty and Clara raised registered and commercial Herefords all their ranching life, selling many bulls to Middle and North Park and Wyoming ranches.  The Middle Park Hereford Association bull sale ran 27 years, 1957-1984.  Rusty and Clara were the only consignors to sell bulls in all 27 sales under Hermosa Herefords.  Rusty was a  good cowman and cowboy.  In the late 1930s and 1940s, he calf roped at the local rodeos in Steamboat, Kremmling, Grand Lake and Walden, usually taking home some money.

Rusty is survived by his wife of 64 years, Clara of Kremmling; two sons, Blaine and wife Judy of Walden and Rod and wife Karlene of Challis, Idaho; four grandchildren, April (Jesse) Meyers, Ginger (Jeff) Chance, Lynnette (Mike) Telck and Jolene (Dustin) Condit; two step-grandchildren, Lorenda (Mike) Smith and Tim (Angie) Power; and 15 great- grandchildren.  He is also survived by three sisters in Texas, Ginger (Perry) Williams, Mildred Redford and Mary Alice Sherman.
