TRICKHAM CEMETERY, COLEMAN COUNTY, TEXAS

There are actually two cemeteries at Trickham, which is a small old community located about 14 miles southeast of Santa Anna.  The earliest graves are located in the townsite and date from the 1860's.  There remain here today only five cut-rock crypts with no inscriptions, and are thought to be the graves of:

Charlie McCain - Dave Upton - Jake Dofflemyer - Buddy Wright (son of Joe Wright), and possibly - Charlie Ellington;

all said to have been killed by Indians.  Early settlers could remember at least seventeen graves here at one time.  These graves were located all around the rock crypts, with many to the north and east.  The area around the rock crypts are kept mowed, but the remainder of the old cemetery area is overgrown with cactus, mesquite, and grass.

       Sometime in the late 1870's, Trickham residents began to bury their dead up the hill west of the town.  I have been unable to determine why the cemetery in the townsite was abandoned and the burial place changed.  Was the first site too crowded or did the residents not want the cemetery so close to their living places?  The current Trickham Cemetery is reached by driving west a short distance on a dirt county road from FM 1176.  In 1893, Mrs. M. M. Sanders of Clark County, Mississippi, came to Coleman County to claim the land her late husband had purchased.  Finding many graves under a large oak tree on the land, she had a five and one-half acre plot fenced and deeded to the community of Trickham for a free burial place.  Today this cemetery is well kept and fenced, with gates on the east and south.  Roads run from these gates and intersect in the west part of the cemetery.  We have used these roads to divide the cemetery into Sections A (southeast part), Section B (northeast part), and Section C (west part).

       During the 1950's, it was decided by the cemetery committee to have a map of the cemetery made.  Edd Featherston was hired to make this map.  In recording this cemetery, we have found the mapping method used most unusual and difficult to follow.  The cemetery was divided into 50 feet by 50 feet blocks.  The blocks were designated alphabetically beginning in the northwest corner of the cemetery.  In each alphabetical block the graves were placed in numerical order.  However, this numerical order seems to have no pattern, either chronologically or row layout, even dividing common markers at times.  Also some blocks have been divided by cemetery roads.  In reading the graves, we have used the snake method of reading rows, going from the end of one row and starting at the same end of the next row.  Family lots may have been divided by this method of reading.  We have added the number assigned by the cemetery map in parentheses.  Many markers with "unknown" have been placed by the cemetery association, as well as many of the old stones being marked with cemetery numbers.  A number of unknown graves have been identified from cemetery records.  In the old part of Section B, some of the rows run at odd angles and are not always in straight rows.  We have found some errors in the placement of stones in the map furnished to us by the cemetery association.

In adding images of the markers to this website, I have used the same order of reading the graves as we used originally.  I have added marker numbers to each marker, so, usually, on every other row, the first one is at the opposite end as the last.  Sort of confusing, but this is the best I can do for now.
