CAMP COLORADO CEMETERY, COLEMAN COUNTY, TEXAS
The Camp Colorado Cemetery is reached by going about five miles northeast of Coleman on Texas State Highway 206 and turning right (east) on FM 2302. FM 2302 turns into a dirt county road at a crossroads. Follow this road about five miles past the crossroads. After passing the ruins of Camp Colorado and the old Sackett house on the left, the cemetery is located on a hill in a pasture on the right about .2 mile south where the dirt road makes a turn to the north.
This cemetery was established in 1857 as a military cemetery. According to Beatrice Grady Gay in her book, "Into the Setting Sun," many of the bodies of the soldiers have been removed to the National Cemetery at San Antonio and later by special dispensation, most of them were carried to Frankfort, Kentucky for burial. It is not known if all of the soldiers' bodies were removed from Camp Colorado, but the large rock wall inside the cemetery where the soldiers were buried still remains. Later many of the local settlers and their descendants used the cemetery for their loved ones place of burial also.
The cemetery is
fenced.
It
is somewhat overgrown, even though many different groups have
tried to
keep it clear over the years. In this cemetery is one of the
few
stands of Buffalo grass to be found in this part of the
country.
There are a number of rock walls surrounding individual and small
groups
of graves. There are many native rock markers on unknown
graves.
Not all have been noted in our reading. We started our
reading in
the northwest corner and read to the east then circled through the
center
and rear of the cemetery. This somewhat random reading was
necessary
due to the growth of brush and the scattered arrangement of the
graves.
