by Leona Bruce
1970

Following the Foreword, Table of Contents and Index, along with page numbers,
of Leona Bruce's
They Came In Peace To Coleman County.
Perhaps at a future date, I will be able to include actual pages or transcription of this book.
This book was made up of newspaper articles written by Mr. Bruce for the Coleman newspaper.
I have a number of notes, drafts, clippings, etc. of these articles, from Mrs. Bruce's files.

FOREWORD
(to They Came In Peace To Coleman County)

This little book is not, and is not meant to be, a history of Coleman County.  For that, the statistics are in Texas Almanacs, newspaper files, county records and a few books by early writers.

But just as a cluster of dried llowers has the leaves and stems and petals, and even the color, it lacks the perfume.  These stories try to convey some of the loves and sorrows, the hardships and successes, the hopes and disappointments of our pioneers, the perfume, if you will, of their characters.

Many Texas counties have had their riots, their gangs of lawless men, their insurrections and their hideouts for criminals. But when our settlers came to Coleman County, they brought their books and plows and flower seeds, their walnut bureaus and their Bibles. They came in peace.
