LINZY HOUSTON McDORMAN MARY ADELINE TEETER OLIVIA LEVISA RODMAN Linzy Houston McDORMAN was born 18 August 1851 in Greene County, Missouri and was the son of William Henry and Susan Elizabeth(McMULLEN) McDORMAN . He grew up on the family farm on Rattlesnake Creek, Greene County. After the death of his parents in 1868 & 1869, he left Missouri and traveled about 120 miles to Indian Territory (later Vinita, Oklahoma) and where he worked for William Preston Teeter in a sawmill. On March 30, 1871, Linzy married Mary Adeline TEETER, daughter of William Preston and Sarah Ann (RODMAN) TEETER. They were married in Maysville, Benton County, Arkansas. Adeline was born 15 May 1856 in Sioux City, Keokuk County, Iowa . Her family lived there until the late 1860’s when they moved to Indian Territory, settling around what was later Vinita, Oklahoma and where William Preston owned a sawmill. Linzy and Adeline McDORMAN’s first three children (Charlotte Temple, Hattie V., and John Henry William Preston) were born in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. Hattie died there before she was a year old. William Preston & Sarah Ann TEETER both died early in 1876 and Sarah Ann’s father, Hugh RODMAN, managed the sawmill until 1880, when it was sold. In 1878 Linzy & Adeline moved their family to Texas. They took with them two of Adeline’s younger siblings, William Thomas, age 12, and Arvadia Marie, age 9. On the 1880 Census, the family was living in Hamilton County, Texas, where Linzy farmed. A son, Weldon Edward, was born there and Walter Edgar was born in Coryell County. Linzy and his brother, James William Henry are on the 1884 Tax Roll for Coryell County, Texas. By 1887 Lindsey and family are living in Mills County, where Katherine Arvada was born. Linzy brought his family to Tom Green County in 1888, one year before the organization of Coke County. The family lived near San Angelo and Linzy farmed and hauled freight from Goldthwaite, Mills County to San Angelo, Tom Green County. Inez Adeline was born in 1890 while the family lived there . By then Linzy was obtaining property in Coke County. He is on the 1890 Tax Roll for Coke County and he had begun homesteading 160 acres in the vicinity of the present Lake Spence spillway. Common to newspapers of the era the San Angelo Standard Times had a section with short blurbs about what local individuals were doing and from the December 19, 1891 edition came this article: “L. H. McDORMAN, the professional ginner at the Bismark Farms, accompanied by his family, was in the city Wednesday. Mr. Mc owns a valuable farm near Robert Lee, to which he will move about the lst of the year.” In Coke County, he farmed and operated one of the first cotton gins in Robert Lee. From the December 24, 1892 San Angelo Standard Times, comes this article: “L.H. McDORMAN got his right leg broke about four inches below the knee last Saturday while at work at the Snyder Gin. He attempted to throw off a belt, while the machinery was running, using a plank which caught in the belt jerking it out of his hand and striking him on the leg with the plank breaking the large bone. Dr. J.C. POWELL set the leg and at last account Mr. McDORMAN was doing very well. – Coke Rustler” The leg never healed quite right and for the rest of his life he walked with a limp and used a cane. The last child, Daisy Esther, was born in 1895 while they lived on the farm. On 25 July, 1907, in Robert Lee, Texas, Mary Adeline passed away. Linzy remarried the next year to Mary Adeline's first cousin, Olivia Levisa RODMAN. Olivia married Linzy on 4 June, 1908 in Tom Green County, where Linzy met her train which came in from Oklahoma. Olive was “Grandma Mc” for most of the Linzy’s grandchildren. She was the daughter of James Milton and Catherine (HARTZELL/HARTLE)RODMAN. She was born 31 May, 1867 in Iowa. James Milton was a brother of Mary Adeline’s mother, Sarah Ann RODMAN. After Linzy retired from farming, he and Olive moved into Robert Lee where they lived on 6th Street. The house was later the home of James Leroy and Inez Adeline (McDORMAN) TAYLOR. Roy TAYLOR completely rebuilt the house over the years. Linzy McDORMAN died 8 September, 1932 and Olive died 17 October, 1938. Lindsey is buried in the Robert Lee Cemetery between the graves of Mary Adeline and Olivia Levisa. There is no agreement as to how to spell Lindsay, Lindsey, Linzy. Linzy commonly used L. H. instead. That is how he entered it in the L. H. McDORMAN Bible and how he is listed on most public records. His gravestone also has L.H. McDORMAN. The L.H. McDORMAN Bible has Linzy Houston added to the L.H., but in a different hand writing. 1860 Greene County, Missouri Census has Lindsey 1900 Coke County Census has Lindsey 1920 Coke County Census has Lyndey McDERMAN 1930 Coke County Census has Lindsey His obit has Linzy. So toss a coin and take a pick. If someone has any real proof of how it should be spelled, I would love to have it. My mother and his granddaughter, Beatrice (TAYLOR) COUNTS, spelled his name as Linzy, so I have attempted to retain that spelling. This is her description of her grandfather: “Linzy has the coloring of the Irish…black hair and clear, bright blue eyes. At the age of 81 he had only a sprinkling of gray in his hair. He was about 5 feet 9 inches tall. He always had a beard. He was a heavy set man and walked with a limp and used a cane due to a leg being broken and incorrectly set after an accident in the cotton gin that he managed. ” Children of Linzy Houston and Mary Adeline (TEETER) McDorman: 1.
