MADISON MORGAN McCUTCHEN FAMILY
By Becky Rodgers

Madison Morgan McCutchen was born March 12, 1823 in Larkinsville, Jackson County, Alabama to Joseph Wesley McCutchen and Mary Tabitha Carruthers. On September 16, 1848 in Larkinsville, Jackson County, Alabama he married Mary Lucinda Jones, daughter of John Jones and Mary Welch. She was born 28 September 1831.

About 1853 Madison, along with his wife and 2 small children, left Larkinsville, Alabama and came to Texas. They first lived in Cherokee County where he ranched and taught school for one year. They moved to Coryell County, Texas where they lived for many years. He was County Judge and a Minute Man with the Texas Rangers during the Civil War.

Madison was the 4th Chief Justice elected in Coryell County, Texas and served during the Civil War. Rather than take the "Iron Clad" oath he resigned. He was firm in his beliefs. He was called Judge McCutchen until his death.

In 1861 Coryell County was under the Confederate government. Lack of funds didn't stop him, he issued County Script which he signed himself. People could redeem in currency of the Confederate States of America. They say that there is still some script in the county.

He bought lots of land in Coryell County, entertained a lot at his home which was always open for any one.

In 1889 the family moved to Coke County. No matter where Madison lived he did his best for everyone. He served his public well. In Coke County he ranched and taught school. He was the first school superintendent in Bronte and was Justice of the Peace for Coke County,

The McCutchen's were all hard working people, and were there to help their neighbors.
