PERSONALS - Robert Lee Observer, Feb. 18, 1960 Contributed by Jo Collier *********************************************************************** The Robert Lee Observer, Robert Lee, Coke County, TX - Feb. 18, 1960 PERSONALS JERRY DEAN returned early last Wednesday to his studies at McMurray College in Abilene. He became ill with the flu when home for a weekend visit and was hospitalized for a few days. Jerry made straight A's during the first semester of college. He has a band scholarship and is foreman of the janitor crew in the new Band Hall. ************************************************************************ EMORY DAVIS, Mrs. DALE WOJEK and her mother, Mrs. FRED HENSON of Sweetwater, were among others who attended funeral rites for Mrs. DICK KANNADY in San Angelo Tuesday morning. EDWIN (BUTCH) DAVIS and BOBBY COWLEY were pallbearers. The service was largely attended. The Kannadys were formerly Robert Lee residents and have many close friends here. Immediate survivors of Mrs. Kannady who was killed in a car wreck at Del Rio Saturday night, are her husband and their daughter, RENEE, 16 years old. Mr. and Mrs. EDDIE ROY BRASWELL, GEORGE BRASWELL and W. D. MCADAMS killed 16 rattlesnakes Sunday afternoon on the Mrs. R. C. RUSSELL Ranch, northwest of Robert Lee. They located a den a half mile from the ranch house occupied by Mr. and Mrs. MELVIN CHILDRESS, and flushed the snakes out by pouring gasoline in the hole. Mrs. FLOYD HARMON returned early last week from Pampa where she spent two weeks helping care for her new grandson in the home of Mr. and Mrs. JERRY HARMON. Mr. Harmon motored to Pampa and bought his wife home. ************************************************************************ Attorney WILLIAM C. MCDONALD was a Robert Lee visitor last Friday and stopped by The Observer office to make it known that he is a candidate for 51st District Judge. A formal statement will be published in this newspaper next week. Mr. McDonald is a Coke County native. He practiced law in Robert Lee and served as County Attorney before moving to San Angelo 15 years ago. ************************************************************************ Mrs. BOBBY WALKER has gone to Lubbock for a week's visit with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. HARRY ANDERSON, and children. The Andersons came down for a weekend visit in the parental DAVE KING home and Mrs. Walker returned to Lubbock with them. Mrs. Walker is convalescing from a recent appendectomy. ************************************************************************ Mrs. BEN GARVIN of Silverton and her daughter, Mrs. C. E. BASHAM, of Lufkin came for a weekend visit with their son and brother, RALPH GARVIN, and wife. The former became ill Sunday and was admitted to Coke Memorial Hospital where she has been treated for asthma and bronchitis. She was much improved yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. OTHO LONG and sons returned Friday from a few weeks' stay at Globe, Ariz. Otho has been hired by F. A. Seidel & Sons to service their trucks and equipment used on the street paving project here. Mr. and Mrs. T. M. WYLIE, JR. and daughter, PRISCILLA, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. MIKE LOMAS at Olney. Mike is employed there by an Abilene seismograph crew. Mrs. Lomas is the former FRANCES WYLIE. Mrs. O. B. JACOBS was brought home Sunday from a San Angelo hospital where she had undergone major surgery. She is making a good recovery. ************************************************************************ The Friendship W. H. D. Club met Feb. 11 at 9 a.m. with Mrs. A. D. FIELDS. There were five members and one child present. The constitution and by-laws for the Home Demonstration club were read and adopted. Council recommendations were read and approved. Mrs. PAT RIVES was nominated as a candidate for T. H. D. A. chairman to be voted on in the March Council meeting. Mrs. TOM RIVES gave the program on "Stain Removal". Next meeting is to be with Mrs. LINZY MCDORMAN Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. ************************************************************************ Another new Robert Lee home is owned by RALPH WALKER. The two- bedroom residence was built on a site near his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. J. WALKER, at the north edge of the city. The other Walker son, D. J. Jr., also has a modern home in the same area. RALPH is engaged in the ranching business and leases the WYATT GUNNELS place and additional pasture on the Divide. He and his wife the former JACKIE SPARKS, have two children. ************************************************************************ COKE COUNTY WHD COUNCIL MEETING Coke County W. H. D. Council meeting met Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 2 pm. Meeting was called to order by chairman, Mrs. CURTIS WALKER. The opening exercise and club prayer was led by Mrs. TAYLOR EMERSON. Three clubs were represented with seven members and Miss HOOPER present. Roll Call and the minutes were read by the secretary, Mrs. R. L. PAGE. A letter of thanks was read from the Abilene State Hospital for the Christmas package sent from the Council. A letter was also read from Austin State Farm Colony. Council voted to sponsor someone from the colony. Delegates for the district meeting were: 1. Mrs. CURTIS WALKER, 2. Mrs. C. E. ARROTT, and 3. Mrs. GLENN WALDROP. Alternate delegates were: 1. Mrs. PAT RIVES, 2. Mrs. FINIS HARMON, and 3. Mrs. TRUMAN PARKER. Miss HOOPER, Mrs. CURTIS WALKER, Mrs. GLENN WALDROP, Mrs. PAT RIVES, Mrs. R. L. PAGE and Mrs. TAYLOR EMERSON attended the Planning Meeting in Sweetwater Monday. The lamp shade work shop will be at the Recreation Hall Feb. 15 and 16. Coke County W. H. D. Recommendations were read. They were to be taken back to the clubs to be approved and voted on in March Council meeting. Time was changed for April Council meeting as the District meeting falls on April 12, regular meeting date. Council will be on Friday, April 8, at 2 pm. 4-H members will have a pancake supper Friday, Feb. 26, at the school lunch room in Robert Lee. Tickets are 50 and 35 cents. Miss HOOPER met with 4-H clubs and Home Development work during January.
