MRS. THEODOSIA SNEAD 100 TODAY, Robert Lee, Coke County, TX Contributed by Jo Collier January, 2010 ****************************************************************************** The Observer/Enterprise, Robert Lee, Coke County, Tx - Dec. 12, 1986 MRS. THEODOSIA SNEAD 100 TODAY Robert Lee Observer, May 22, 1981,Robert Lee, Coke County, TX Mrs. Theodosia "Mammy" Snead will be 100 years old Friday, May 22. A resident of West Coke County Nursing Home since April 1971, she will be honored there with a birthday party especially dedicated to her. Although she is in very frail health now and unable to visit with her family and friends, "Mammy" has been a joy to all who ever knew her. The daughter of Dr. and Mrs. David Sloan, she was born Theodosia Sloan on May 22, 1881. In 1916, she became acquainted with a widower with six children. Theodosia and John Snead were married in Hill County in December, 1916. Mrs. Snead immediately moved to Coke County with her new family and made them her life. The children were J. C., Iva, Ethel, Douglas, DeWitt, and Joe Long. She loved every minute of her farm life and although she had no children of her own, had a full time job with caring for a farm home, sewing, canning, and preserving. Children, grandchildren, and visitors loved her stories of her childhood and way of life of the past. Many of her favorites involved a well-loved black woman who cared for her as a child: hence her own name, "Mammy" to the youngsters in her family. Family and friends recall her sweet disposition and calm manner of accepting whatever came her way. Mrs. Snead had a humorous way of presenting a story and knew many early day tales. Always starched and clean, she wore her white, curly, wispy hair twisted on the back of her head, wearing her wedding rings pinned to her clean, flowered aprons. Mr. Snead passed away in 1956 and for several years Mrs. Snead lived with relatives due to her failing eyesight. Later poor health dictated that she take a room in the nursing home. Still living are three sons, J. C. of Robert Lee, Douglas of Bronte, Joe Long of Roscoe, and numerous grandchildren. "Mammy" has had a long, productive happy life.
