News Story: S. A. Kiker Family, 1906 Contributed by Brenda Scott Hines April 2011 *********************************************************************** The Bronte Enterprise, September 3, 1964 {Historical and Progress Edition} KIKER S. A. Kikers Came to Coke in 1906 The S. A. Kiker family has a long history in Bronte and Coke County. Mr. Kiker was born February, 1869 Etowah County Ala., but came to Texas with his parents when he was two years old. It took them three months to come from Alabama to Erath County, Texas in 1871. Miss Della McCleskey became his wife in 1891 and they came to Coke County in 1906. They engaged in the ranching business for many years and he served 14 years as commissioner of Precinct 2, Coke County. They joined the Methodist Church in 1906. Mrs. Kiker's parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. H. McCleskey, also came to Bronte in 1906. She was the former Elizabeth Stancil, born Dec. 5, 1849, in North Carolina, and married to David Henderson McCleskey in 1872. Mr. McCleskey died in 1917 and Mrs. McCleskey died in 1946, both in Coke County. Mr(s). Kiker still resides in the family home here.
