News Story: O. C. Ivey Family Contributed by Brenda Scott Hines April 2011 *********************************************************************** The Bronte Enterprise, September 3, 1964 {Historical and Progress Edition} IVEY O. C. Ivey Family Came in 1903 The ten children of Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Ivey gathered November 11, 1951, at the Ivy home, here, to celebrate the 64th anniversary of their parents. They were Paul, Ernest, Cumbie, Tootsie (W. W.), Bryan, Earl, Ray, Jeff and Homer Ivey and the only daughter, Mrs. W. O. (Ora) Eubanks. Less than two weeks after the anniversary celebration, Mrs. Ivey died suddenly on November 20, 1951, of a heart attack. She was 82 years old at the time. Mr. Ivey lived to be 90 years of age and died Aug. 4, 1958 after several months illness. Mr. Ivey was born April 17, 1866, in Georgia and came to Texas at the age of 3 with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Cape Ivey. In 1887 he was married to Elizabeth Jones and they came to Bronte to make their home in 1903. The family farmed north of town until 1943 when Mr. Ivey retired from farm work and moved to town. Mr. Ivey studied and practiced as a veterinarian for many years although he never received a diploma. For a long time he was the only "veterinarian" in the Bronte area. He was a deputy sheriff of Coke County from 1918 to 1922. He served as deputy under Hawley Allen, then Coke County sheriff. He was also a pioneer in fruit growing in this area. Several of the Ivey children also died since that time. A grandson, Jack Ivey, said recently that on the day of their 64th celebration, most all of the grandchildren were here, too. He said he didn't know how many, but there must have been over a 100 in all. *************************** Permission granted by The Observer/Enterprise for publication in the Coke County TXGenWeb and/or the Coke County Archives of the USGenWeb.
