News Story: Baseball - Bronte Takes Game from Veri Best - 1939 Contributed by Brenda Scott Hines Sep 2011 ************************************************************************** The Bronte Weekly Enterprise, Coke County, Texas, Friday, May 19, 1939 BASEBALL - Bronte Takes Game from Veri Best by Score of 6 - 4 Timely hitting of the Bronte Boys combined with pitching of Marvin Corley proved too much for the Veri Best nine, and Bronte won Sunday afternoon's game played on the home field, edging out the invaders by a score of 6 - 4. The turning point of the game came when Walton tripled with two men on bases, bringing in two runs which broke the tie and cinched the game for Bronte. The Bronte boys fairly socked the ball, driving out plenty of long high ones to all parts of the outfield, but the Veri Best outfield was really up on their game, allowing none of the drives to get through for a hit. Sunday's game was a thriller and was attended by the largest number of fans to witness a game on the Bronte field this season. The weather was good and the boys were right, and the fans were fairly dishing out the "razz". The Veri Best nine were tough - plenty tough - but the Bronte boys were a little tougher. Bronte hasn't lost a game so far this season and after their performance Sunday the prediction is that they will win out the Concho Basin league.
