George Reed Singleton Jr.,
George Reed Singleton Jr., 87, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2007, in
Houston, Texas. He was born April 30, 1920, in Jacksonville, to George
Reed Singleton Sr. and Alice (Gillespie) Singleton.
George graduated from Jacksonville High School and Lon Morris College
and enjoyed playing football as center and captain of the team. In 1940,
he enrolled at Texas A&M and enlisted in the Army Reserve. He was later
called to active duty in 1943 and attended Engineer OCS at Ft. Belvoir,
Va. where he was commissioned 2nd Lt. and was sent on to Italy.
George received several military awards and was promoted to captain in
August, 1945. When the war ended, George returned to Texas A&M and
received his BSME in 1947. From 1947 to 1988, George pursued a career as
a mechanical engineer working in Houston, Paris, France and Amuay,
Venezuela for Creole Petroleum, NASA, and retired in 1988 after 17 years
with the Veterans Administration in Arlington, Va. In 1991, George moved
back to Houston to be near his daughter and family.
George is survived by his loving wife, Truehart Singleton; daughter,
Susan Nelson Roberts and her husband Pat of Cypress, Texas; sister, Fran
McArthur Buckingham and her husband Jim of Horseshoe Bay, Texas; two
grandchildren, Kelly Caudel and wife Audra and Chris Nelson and wife
Amber; one great-grandson, Beau; aunts, Janette Gillespie and Katie
Gillespie of Jacksonville; several nieces and nephews; and other loving
family members and friends.
A memorial service will be held in Houston on Friday, May 18, 2007, at 2
p.m. in the Chapel of Cypress-Fairbanks Funeral Home. A graveside
committal service will be held at noon Saturday, May 19th at Resthaven
Cemetery in Jacksonville, officiated by Rev. Kevin King of First United
Methodist Church.
