BILLY G. SMITH

 

Billy G. Smith, 89, died Dec. 27 following a recent illness.

A memorial service was held Jan. 4 at First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville.

Minister Victoria Griffin officiated. Burial was in the Jacksonville City Cemetery on Kickapoo Street.

He was preceded in death by his wife Edna Smith, parents, Mattie and Tol Smith and his sister, Ruth Smith Goforth and her husband; and sisters Ruth Goforth and Martha Liston.

He is survived by his only daughter, Dr. Tolly Smith, and her husband Wayne Wildcat.

Mr. Smith formerly managed Beall's Department Store in downtown Jacksonville and Baytown.

He was active in civic groups and served as vice-president of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and Rodeo, 20-40 Club, Aggie Alumni, Masons and Shriners.

He was the founder of the West Jacksonville Water District and the Retail Merchants Coffee Club, the Director of the Rural Electric Association (REA) for 38 years and an elder in the Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Smith attended Jacksonville Baptist College and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1940.

He served in World War II. Autry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
