Memorial services for Robert Clayton McWherter, 88, of Jacksonville are scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008 at First Christian Church, Jacksonville with Rev. R. G. Ericson officiating. Mr. McWherter passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008 in Jacksonville. He was born Feb. 25, 1920 in Gainesville, to Henry Guy McWherter and Katie Lee Munday McWherter. He attended Paris Junior College, Texas Technological University, and the University of Texas at Austin where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in aerospace engineering. His 40 years in the aircraft industry included Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, Calif., Vought Aircraft in Grand Prairie, and Fluidyne Engineering in Minneapolis, Minn. When World War II interrupted his education for five years, he was an active fighter pilot in the South Pacific and European Theaters, followed by service in the Korean War. From his early days he was dedicated to his church, wherever he lived, having held offices as deacon and elder, as well as teaching Sunday school classes. Since moving to Jacksonville from El Paso in 2004 he has been a member of the First Christian Church. Mr. McWherter is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jack McWherter and Henry Guy McWherter, Jr. He is survived by his wife Marianna; daughters Betty Kay Apodaca, Gail Kent, Mary Anna Payne and Wendy Chloe Hooper; son Robert William McWherter; grandchildren Todd Walker, Brett Walker, Matt Walker, Jeff Boyce, Jason Boyce, Amy Pruett, Jamie Gail Carter, Will Kent, Katie Walker, Scott Walker, Will Walker, Josh Payne and Tyler Payne and 23 great-grandchildren. Mr. McWherter died Sept. 16.
