CLARENCE MAYES
Funeral for Clarence Mayes, 87, of Rusk was at 2 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Rusk Church of Christ with Robby Arrington and the Rev. Don Copeland officiating. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Mr. Mayes died Sept. 8. He was born June 25, 1921, in San Augustine to Robert Terrell and Annie Weaver Mayes.
After moving to Rusk, he played independent basketball as a member of Rusk Lions Club. He coached the girls softball team, "The Buffs." During the Depression, he was a Civilian Conservation Corp Boy. He served in the Army Air Corp in World War II and was a member of the Rusk Church of Christ. Mr. Mayes retired from Rusk State Hospital after 33 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Doris Beard Mayes and Doris Sartain Mayes; daughter, Anita Joy Dill; and step son, Donnie Sartain.
Survivors are two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Doris Mayes of Athens, John and Tammy Mayes of Humble; three daughters and two sons in law, Gloria Francis of Ventura, Calif., Judy and Raymond Vermillion of Rusk and Jana and Sam Snider of Frankston; two step-daughters and son in law, Gloria Cumby of Rusk and Sue and Wayne Burton of Austin; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were grandsons, Danny Francis Jr., Kelly Francis, Jake Vermillion, Matt Vermillion, Tim Mayes, Terry Mayes, Rusty Snider and Travis Looney. Honorary pallbearers were David Beard, Dr. Jim Largent, Kent Shuttleworth, Ray Partin, Michael Beard, Jerry Marrow, Kenny McClure and David Fulton. Memorials may be made to The Rusk Athletic Booster Club, 203 East 7th St., Rusk, TX, 75785. Wallace- Thompson Funeral Home was in charge.

Funeral services for Clarence Mayes, 87 of Rusk are scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 12, 2008 in the Rusk Church of Christ with Robby Arrington and Rev. Don Copeland officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Rusk. Mr. Mayes died Sept. 8, 2008 in a Jacksonville Hospital. He was born June 25, 1921 in San Augustine to Robert Terrell and Annie Weaver Mayes. He attended and excelled at basketball at Melvin School in San Augustine County. After moving to Rusk, he played independent basketball as a member of Rusk Lions Club. He coached the Girls Softball Team, “The Buffs” and in recent years had become an avid Rusk Eagles Sports fan.
