LELA STOKES

Funeral for Lela Stokes, 90, of Wells, was at 2 p.m. Monday at Gipson Funeral Home, Lufkin, with Carlton D. Stokes officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Stokes died Aug. 23, 2007. She was born Oct. 15, 1916, in Nacogdoches County to Floyd Carlton and Evie Jane Tynes Purdy.

She resided in Wells most of her life, and retired from Lufkin State School with 12 years of service.

She was a homemaker, a member of Order of Eastern Star, Wells Chapter No. 400 and a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by son, Walter N. Stokes, and daughter, Ruth W. Brandon.

Survivors include two sons, John B. Stokes Jr. of Hempstead and Carlton D. Stokes of Claremore, Okla.; four daughters, Nelda Jordan of Nacogdoches, Jo Ellen Stokes of Houston, Bobbie Musick of Maydelle and Mary Shumaker of Pollok; two sisters, Gertude Wheeler of Diboll and Mildred Phillips of Panhandle; a brother, Gerald Purdy of Panhandle; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Tim Martin, Victor Castro, Barry Stevens, Jason Shumaker, Mike Shumaker and Byron Stokes.
