Irby McKenzie Hilliard 7/15/1908 -4/21/2007
Irby McKenzie Hilliard was born in rural Van Zandt County
on July 15, 1908. Graduated from Grand Saline High School, and entered what was
then North Texas Teachers’ College with a teaching career in mind. That plan
changed when she met and married George M. Hilliard, Jr., who had interest in
the study of medicine which he completed in 1935. The family moved to
Jacksonville, Texas in 1945 after Dr. Hilliard had served four years military
duty.
Irby’s love of life and people was her most cherished asset. Her continued
interest in the medical profession was evident by her many years of work in the
Cherokee County Medical Auxiliary and her volunteer work at Nan Travis Memorial
Hospital, now East Texas Medical Center. Her family and her church were also an
integral part of her life.
Survivors include sons Dr. George Hilliard and wife Carmen, Longview, Texas,
James R. (Jim) Hilliard and wife Beth, and daughter, Sally Hilliard Shank of
Dallas. Grandchildren include Julie & John Webster, Atlanta, Georgia, Dr.
George Hilliard IV & wife Jill, Memphis, Tennessee, Amanda Hilliard, Ft. Worth,

great grandchildren.
Irby wrote: To you, whom I have loved so much, fear not nor grieve at
my departure. Life has been a beautiful journey.
