Dorothy "Dottie" Welker Acker 3/18/1915 -7/2/2007
Dorothy (“Dottie”) Welker Acker passed away on July
2, 2007, in Jacksonville, Texas. Dottie, one of eleven children, was
born on March 18, 1915, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to parents, Alvin
R. Welker and Minnie Koontz Welker, both deceased.
Dottie met A.G. Acker, Jr., while both were serving in the Navy during
World War II, and they were married in California on July 24, 1945,
almost 63 years ago. After the war they made their home in Jacksonville,
where Dottie was a Girl Scout leader for many years and an active member
of the First United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school and
Vacation Bible School. She also belonged to the Alpha Omega Sunday
School Class, “20-40” Supper Club, and the Cherokee County Genealogy
Society.
She is survived by her husband A.G. Acker, Jr.; children, Godbey Acker
and his wife Martha of Jacksonville, Donna Acker Hillin and her husband
Tom of Houston. “Grandmommy” also leaves behind five grandchildren,
Tamara Acker May and her husband Ronald of Tyler, TX, Bry Acker and his
wife Jennifer of Arlington, TX, Amanda Acker Grissom and her husband
John of Bentonville, AR, Thomas Greg Hillin and his wife Suzanne of
Ventura, CA, Chris Hillin and his wife Mavis of West Hollywood, CA;
three great-grandchildren, Riley May, Brayden Acker, and Avery Grissom.
Dottie is also survived by a brother, Homer Welker and wife Anna Mae; a
sister, Norma Smith; and a sister-in-law, Freida Acker.
The family would like to extend our love and deep appreciation to “Miss
Dottie’s” wonderful caregivers: Vergie Lee, Gwen Herndon, Annie Myrul
McClelland, Willie Mae Davis, and Dora Blanton. Also, a special thanks
to the staff at Angelina House in Jacksonville.
Visitation will be held at the Autry Funeral Home on Thursday, July 5,
2007, from 7:00-8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm,
Friday, July 6, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church of
Jacksonville, TX, with Rev. Kevin King and Dr. Faulk Landrum
officiating. A private burial will follow.

Funeral for Dorothy (Dottie) Welker Acker, 92, of Jacksonville, was at 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kevin King and the Rev. Dr. Faulk Landrum officiating. A private burial followed. Mrs. Acker died July 2. One of 11 children she was born March 18, 1915, in Pittsburgh, Pa. to the late Alvin R. Welker and Minnie Koontz Welker.
