Carl Dean Shank

January 14, 1979

 

DENTON- Carl Dean Shank, 72, of Denton, brother of two Jacksonville residents, died early Saturday morning after a short illness.

  Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday  in St. David’s Episcopal Church of Denton.

  Mr. Shank had lived in Jacksonville in 1945-46.

  He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Kathryn Shank of Denton; one son, Carl Dean Shank Jr. of Morgantown, W. Va; and two brothers, Roy Shank and Earl Shank, both of Jacksonville.

  The family suggests memorials to St. David’s Episcopal Church in Denton or the American Heart Fund.

Earl W. Shank

January 18, 1998

 

  Services for Earl W. Shank, 78, of Jacksonville, will be held at 2 p.m. today in Jacksonville First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Kennedy and the Rev. Matt Idon officiating.

  Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Boren-Conner Funeral Home of Jacksonville.

  Mr. Shank died Saturday in his home.

  He was born in Winona on Dec. 23, 1919, and lived in Jacksonville most of his life. He was employed by Bealls Department Store on May 26, 1938. Mr. Shank served as a pilot in the U. S. Air Force from 1942 until 1945 in the Air Transportation Command and in the European Theater of War.

  He returned to Bealls Department Store chain in 1945 and worked in various positions until retiring in May 1983. He was executive vice president of finance when he retired. For the past 20 years he served at director of finance and real estate.

   When Mr. Shank worked for the chain, there were 125 stores in Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. He handled negotiations for all store leases, which ranged from large mall locations to strip centers as well as downtown locations.

  Mr. Shank was one of the original founders of the W. F. Bealls Company, Shreveport, La,; that has 55 stores in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Georgia. He served as vice-president and secretary-treasurer and as a director until retirement in April 1986.

  At various times during his business career, he invested as a partner in shopping centers and apartments in Dallas and Austin, and strip centers in Dallas and Shreveport, La.

  Mr. Shank was a member of Jacksonville First United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative board. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Austin Bank, Lon Morris College and Cherokee County Club.

  He was preceded in death by his brothers, Roy Shank and Dean Shank; and grandson, Weston Earl Shank.

  Survivors include his wife, Dianne Shank of Jacksonville; sons and daughters-in-law, William Earl and  Margaret Shank of Kingwood, Dick Shank of Simi Valley, Calif., and Lawrence Ray and Sybil Jo Morton-Shank of Jacksonville; daughter and son-in-law, Francis Beall “Fancy” Stover and husband Robert Edward Stover of Jacksonville; step daughters, Tenia Barrington and Paula Dillingham, both of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Christian Neal Shank, Courtney Beall Shank, Lisa McGregor, Lauren Johnson, Nova Ukariha Shank, Ingrid Francis Shank, Dusty Dewayne Shank, Jodi Lynn Hancock,  Deana Michelle Hancock, Samantha Paige Hope, John Randal Stover, Cynthia Ann Stover, Karl Lee Hamilton, Shane Matthews and Anthony Morello; several great-grand-children; and several nieces and nephews.

  Pallbearers will be Cecil Swinney, Eddie Smith, Joe Terrell, Bill Childs, Chuck Anderson and Jeff Austin Jr.

  Honorary pallbearers will be Ron Boren, Sam A. Cobb, Earl Jackson and John Dienes.

  If desired, memorials may be made to Jacksonville First United Methodist Church.

Roy Franklin Shank

August 25, 1997

 

  Graveside services for Roy Franklin Shank, 85 of Jacksonville were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home.

  He died Friday in his home.

  Mr. Shank was born in Winona and settled in Jacksonville in the early 1930s. For 43 years he was the managing partner of Newton-Shank Manufacturing Company, now Texas Basket Company.

  He was a former Jacksonville City Council member and the oldest living president of the Jacksonville Rotary Club, Mr. Shank was a member of First United Methodist Church.

  Survivors include children, Roy D. Shank of Austin, Linda and Jim Eller of Austin, Barbara and Doug Wilson of Boston Mass., and Tom and Terrie Shank of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Colin Swanson, Steven Shank, Stewart Shank, Elizabeth Wilson and Kimberly Shank; brother and sister-in-law, Earl and Diane Shank of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews.

  Contributions in memory of Mr. Shank may be made to the Jacksonville Public Library.

Mrs. Mary Denby Shank

Mrs. Mary Denby Shank, 78, of Jacksonville, died at 1:30 p.m. Saturday after an extended illness.

  Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Resthaven Memorial Park with the Rev. Matt Idom officiating, under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home.

  Mrs. Shank was a lifetime resident of Jacksonville, and a member of First United Methodist Church.

  She is survived by her husband, Roy F. Shank of Jacksonville; two sons, Tom Shank of Jacksonville, and Roy D. Shank of Austin; two daughters, Mrs. Linda Eller of Austin, and Mrs. Barbara Wilson of Boston, Mass,; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Choate of Dallas, and Mrs. Mae Gilliam of Jacksonville; and five grandchildren, Colin Swanson, Steven Shank, Stewart Shank, Elizabeth Wilson and Kimberly Shank.
