John Marshall (Mike) Acker

Services for John (Mike) Acker will be held at Beall Chapel Baptist Church in Jacksonville, at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 2, under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home.

Mr. Acker passed away on June 28, 2007. He was born on May 21, 1925 in Dialville.

Mr. Acker spent his childhood on the family farm in Dialville and he received his education in the schools there. John joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and worked as an aviation machinist. Upon his return from the Navy in 1946, John began his career as an electrician and serviceman with Sears Roebuck.. In 1964 he was named District Manager and John and his family moved to Dallas. He retired from Sears in 1985 after almost 40 years of service. John married his wife of sixty years, Dorothy Kennedy Acker, on March 22, 1947. He was a loving husband and during much of his wife’s long illness John was her primary caregiver. His attention and devotion to her has been an inspiration to many. After Dorothy entered Christian Care Center, John volunteered each day helping the nursing home staff in whatever way he could. He made many friends there and he will be missed.

His wife, Dorothy, precedes him in death. His children, Susan Nash, and Rodney and Judy Acker, all of Dallas survive him. His grandchildren, Brandy Jones of Dallas, Amy and James Carpinello, Shelley Acker, and Rachel Acker, all of Los Angeles, Sam Acker of Austin and two great grandchildren, Jack and Ava Carpinello, also survive him.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday July 2, 2007 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. or Christian Care Center of Mesquite.

Funeral for John Marshall (Mike) Acker, 82, of Mesquite, formerly of Dialville, was at 2 p.m. July 2 at Beall Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Harold Freeman officiating. Burial was in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Mr. Acker died June 28. He was born May 21, 1925, in Dialville. He was a manager for a Sears retail store. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Preceding him in death were his wife, Dorothy Jean Acker; his parents, John Acker and Annie Acker; siblings, Kitty Bell Barclay, Louise Scurlock, Sam Acker and Jack Acker. Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Judy Acker of Dallas; a daughter, Susan Nash of Dallas; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Sam Acker, Jack Scurlock, Jackson Chandler and Jim Nash. Honorary pallbearers were A.J. Kennedy, John Frank Hamilton, James Carpinello and Samuel Acker. Thompson Funeral Home was in charge.
