DR. JOHN MEEKS NEAL
DESCENDANTS
NUMBERING LIST AND
CHRONOLOGY
FOR DR. JOHN MEEKS NEAL
DESCENDANTS
Dear Gordon Bennett:
Thank you for your prompt response. I will attach the Neal Chronology numbering list for starters, as this will show you very quickly who some of the Cherokee County, TX families are. I have put in brackets in this list the surname of each husband of a woman in the list.
The most startling discovery came last year when a previously-unknown
1886 biographical publication for Knox County, IL turned out to contain
detailed biographies of Charity Teague Neal Camp and her husband Thomas
Camp. This information revealed that two of Dr. Neal's daughters (and
eventually his younger son) left Tennessee in 1848 to move to Illinois
to leave slave territory behind, and I now know that Dr. Neal's wife had
strong Quaker roots in South Carolina. Those Quaker roots probably lay
behind this decision, which split the family during the Civil War with
the result that the two groups of cousins gradually forgot about each
other. There are five Union pension files at National Archives, two of
which were particularly
rich in information.
Most of the sources are Census enumerations and published records. I
have found the early Cherokee County, TX records as published (and the
tombstone transcriptions) a delight to use at the Library of Congress.
Manuscript sources are generally noted in the text of the Chronology
itself. My great-grandfather was the oldest son of an oldest son of Dr.
Neal, so he
inherited what loose estate papers there were for the settlement of two
estates in 1839 and 1853 in counties where the courthouses burned.
There are also a few privately owned nineteenth century letters in the
family, and I would like to think there might be similar materials in
some collections in Cherokee County, TX but have yet to locate any.
There are many gaps in this information, whenever I have not been able yet to locate Census information or a marriage record or a tombstone record.
The fullest information from a Cherokee County perspective is for the descendants of Alvin Shattuck and Mary Jane Neal Shattuck, as they published privately in the early 1980s a very good genealogy called Alvin Shattuck of Texas and his Descendants (1981). I have done a lot of work on the Reece Pickens and Elizabeth A. Neal Pickens line, which those of us in Georgia had forgotten about. (Reece Pickens's sister married my great-great-grandfather Abraham Belton Neal, and his sister married Reece Pickens.)
Once you see the format I have developed, I will let you recommend
what form of "publication" you recommend for Cherokee County, TX users.
Obviously my goal is to contact people who may have information I am
still missing. I
have information on later generations, but it becomes increasingly
spotty so for the moment I am dealing with only the first four
generations.
There are two pieces of information I cannot pull from any published sources here in Washington. If you have a member who routinely does research in the Cherokee County Courthouse, these two facts would help me a great deal:
One, the date when William Pinkney Brittain made his first purchase of land in Cherokee County, TX. I know that he was already active in a Masonic lodge in Rusk in 1848, and in 1840 he was in Benton County, AL. Unfortunately, the deed books for Benton County, AL were destroyed during the Civil War so the only way to date his move to Texas is from deeds at your end.
Two, the date when Reece Pickens made his first purchase of land in
Cherokee County, TX. Reece Pickens is also in Benton County, AL in
1840, but I cannot find him in the 1850 Census in any location I have
checked, which makes me think that was the year when a group of related
family groups traveled west from Alabama to Texas and were missed by all
Census
enumerators. I have a record of a Pickens daughter born in Alabama in
1849 and another record of a Pickens daughter married in Texas in 1851.

DR. JOHN MEEKS NEAL CHRONOLOGY
[This Chronology has been researched and prepared by Dr. Neal’s great-great-great-grandson Stephen Neal Dennis in Washington, D.C. in 2002. It relies for the listing of the children of Dr. Neal on the manuscript “Family Record of John M. Neal” prepared in the late 1840s and draws heavily on earlier research by Dr. Neal’s Texas great-great-granddaughter Mary Ruby Neal Brown and estate papers for Dr. John Meeks Neal and Abraham Belton Neal owned by Martha Frances Neal Dennis.]
[Dr. Neal’s Texas great-great-great-granddaughter Dorothy Odom Bruce generously contributed a copy of the scarce private publication Alvin Shattuck of Texas and his Descendants (1981), which has made a comprehensive listing of the Shattuck line of Dr. Neal’s descendants possible. Biographies of Charity Teague Neal Camp and her husband Thomas Camp published in Illinois in 1886 made it possible to reconstruct much of the Camp line of Dr. Neal’s descendants and to rediscover the missing Courtney line.]
[Dr. Neal’s Missouri great-great-great-great-grandson Brian S. Brooks of the University of Missouri-Columbia has posted much of the available genealogical data for the Neal family on-line, thereby encouraging fresh research and a sharing of information among Neal descendants. This Chronology is therefore very much a “family” effort that draws on the work of many careful researchers over several generations.]
