William Marion Hailey was my great-grandfather and his son Thomas was my grand-father. Thomas married Effie "Ora" Rainer and she became my grandmother. And here it gets complicated. William was also married 2nd to Elizabeth Mandane Rainer who was a sister to Ora Rainer Hailey. I have never tried to figure out the double relationship to me--Louise G. Stratton. The mother of Thomas Hailey is still unknown at this date Feb. 2003. Family tradition says that William M. Hailey had other children by his unknown 1st wife. He had 2 daughters by Elizabeth "Betty" Mandane Rainer

Four Lamesa Residents Killed by Caliche Slide; Three die Instantly; One dies Saturday
Five Lamesans, members of the maintenance department of the Texas State Highway department had just finished their lunches on last Friday, January 22, and were sitting around a fire they had built to warm by. They had been working in a strip caliche pit on the Tom Kellam place six miles south of town on the Big Spring highway. Building their fire on the north side of the pit to ward off a cold north wind, they sat under a slight ledge of a six foot bank to relax a few moments before returning to their work in the afternoon. Suddenly and without warning the ledge gave away, hurling hundreds of pounds of caliche on the small group, killing three outright and injuring a fourth so that he passed away Saturday afternoon. The fifth and surviving member of the group escaped without sustaining any permanent injury.
The dead were:
N. G. Scott, 60 a long time resident of Lamesa, whose back was broken by the impact of a large boulder, and who had been a member of the highway department about five years.
Walter Breeding, 43, probably the victin of internal injuries was pinned over the fire and suffocated by the smoke, a member of the department for four years.
Tom Hailey, 58, part time worker, was crushed by the rocks and killed instantly.
Willie Emmett Busby, 43, received internal injuries, when a large boulder pinned him to the ground, and although he was brought to a local hospital where he underwent an operation in an effort to save him, the injuries proved fatal and he passed away Saturday afternoon.
Victor Crawley, the other workman, was sitting directly against the bank and the cave-in pitched over his body, although loose dirt pinned his legs and feet so that it was several minutes before he could extricate himself to give aid to his companions. He received painful bruises and shock, which still confines him to his home, but no serious injuries were received by him. As soon as Crawley got himself free he went to work to rescue the four trapped men. Realizing that Busby was the only one who was not then oast human aid, he tried to pry the large rock off Busby, but it was too large for one man to move, he started to the highway to hail some passerby. At this moment Jap Randle and Jack Phinizy of Lamesa were returning from a call to Ackerly, and seeing Crawley running to the road, stopped to see what had happened. They sent Crawley to Lamesa in their car while they set about to get the injured men out of the pile of caliche and dirt. The rock that held Busby to the ground had to be broken with a crowbar before he could be gottn out. He was then carried to the highway where a car stopped and he was sent in to the hospital. Randle and Phinizy remained and continued the rescue work until all the men were dug out and brought to Lamesa in an ambulance. Hundreds of people have viewed the place of the cave-in since the accident and marvel at how comparatively small it appears, to have been the cause of the most tragic accident which has ever happened in Dawson County . Various explanations have been given for the mysterious slide, most plausible being that the extreme cold weather had frozen the ground solidly and the heat of the noon day sun augmented by the fire which had been built by the workmen, had caused the ground to expand and crack under the weight of the overhanging ledge.
Breeding Buried in Callahan County
The body of Walter Breeding was taken to Cross Plains Friday night, where funeral services were held Saturday, and burial was made in the Cottowood cemetery near that place. Breeding, who was unmarried, is survived by his father, H. L. Breeding, and three brothers: Leonard Breeding of Lamesa, J.M. Breeding of Lamesa, and Arvie Breeding of Cross Plains; Also three sisters, Mrs. F. A. Oglesby of Cross Plains, Mrs. B. B. Jones of Cross Plains and Mrs. S. M. Scrivinge of Dayton, Texas
Hailey Funeral Saturday
Funeral services for Tom Hailey, victom of the caliche pit diaster, were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 at the First Baptist church in Lamesa. Rev. E. F. Cole, pastor, conducted the services. Burial was in the Lamesa cemetery. Mr Hailey had been a member of the Baptist church for 24 years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ora Hailey, and three daughters, Mrs. Dock Gillispie and Mrs. Elbert Brown of Lamesa, and Mrs. Rufus Aten of Kermit , Texas .
Scott Buried Saturday
N. G. Scott was laid to rest Saturday afternoon in the Lamesa cemetery following funeral services which were held in the Lamesa Church of Christ at 3:15 , Minister J. C. Foster conducted the services. Mr. Scott leaves a widow and three sons to mourn his passing, Mrs. Anna Belle Scott, Lamesa, Loy Scott of Lovington , NM , Linnie Scott, Lamesa, and Aaron Scott, Big Spring . Also his parents Mr and Mrs G.W. Scott and three brothers and four sisters.
Legion Funeral Given Busby.
The final chapter in Dawson County's tragic accident of last Friday, was ended Monday afternoon when the remains of Emmett Busby was laid to rest in the Lamesa cemetery beneath a bank of beautiful floral offerings which attested to the high esteem in which he was held by his many friends in Lamesa. Funeral services were held in the First Methodist church at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. M. m. Beavers in charge of the services, assisted by Rev. E. F. Cole. A male quartette composed of Owen Taylor, Essie More, A. J. McDaniel, and Tom Barron sang "Rock Of Ages". Members of the local post of the American Legion escorted the cortege to the cemetery where he was buried with military honors. Willie Emmett Busby was born in Atlanta , GA , in 1893. He had been a resident of Lamesa for several years. In 1927 he married a Lamesa girl, Miss Nell Barrington, who survives him. He had been a mamber of the Methodist church since youth. He was a member of the masonic and Odd Fellows lodges and of the American Legion. Besides his widow, Mrs. Nell Busby, the deceased leaves five brothers to mourn his untimely death. They are L.L. Busby, of O'Donnell, H. G. Busby, of Greenville, Texas; C. F. Busby of Dallas; L. C. Busby of Farmersville, Texas, and J. A. Busby of Celeste, Texas

Ora and Tom Hailey raised her nephew as their son from the time he, Adrian Simpson, was 3 weeks old. His mother was a sister of Ora's and had died. His natural father, Jake, died when he was only 10. Tom Hailey was killed in January 1937 in the cave in of a gravel pit in Lamesa , Texas
Adrian was very good to my grandmother Ora Hailey and watched over her until her death in Feb 1957. He farmed most of his life in Hancock community for Sam Hodge, so there was always food he could bring to town for my grandmother.

This is my Mother and Virgie was her first name, but she was known as Lucille. She had a hard life, being a farmer's daughter and her first 3 husband's were also farmers. The day before I was born she headed maise from the back of a wagon. She was married 5 times, divorcing 3 husbands and having 2 die. At one time she was unmarried for 20 years between husbands. She lived in Alto, Lamesa and Ft Worth,TX., Wichita , KS., So. San Francisco and San Mateo , CA., Denver , Bennett and Lakewood , CO . She went 50 years without being a patient in a hospital and rarely saw a doctor in that time. In October of 1990 she suffered a series of mini strokes and had to have open heart surgery a month short of being 83 years old. She had to go from the hospital to a nursing home, where she died 6 years later, 25 days short of her 89th birthday. She had out lived all of her immediate family, mother, father, sisters etc. She had 2 children, 4 grandchildren(1deceased), and 4 great grandchildren.Written by Louise Gillispie Stratton November 28, 1998 --- Peoria , AZ

Notes for DOCK POUNDS GILLISPIE:
Dock was a much married man, about 5 times, a couple of which may not have been official. He was a dear and loving man and was my Father, but the fact remains, he loved the ladies. He could be married to a lovely lady, but was forever chasing after someone else's wife. By his 1st wife Lucille Hailey, he had a natural daughter Louise and an adopted son T. J.. He decided he wanted a natural son as well, so he went searching for a wife who would bear him a son. No wife bore him any children, until the last wife(?), who was 30 years younger and no legal record has been found of a marriage for them. This wife(?) bore a son and then a daughter who carry the name Gillispie on their birth certificates. Dad always told me that he had not married their mother and they were not his. Dad told a lot of fibs, and long before he got older. Now he is gone, so who knows what was true and what was not? He fell off his roof and was killed instantly, so the coroner said. A neighbor had driven past Dad's place about 8AM on May 27,1988 and had seen Dad on his roof working on his evap. cooler. About noon he drove back by and did not see Dad, but did see the old dog sitting in side yard and the kitchen door wide open. On the 28th when Mr. Miller went by at 8AM everything was the same as the day before, so when he came back by at noon he decided he had better see what was going on. After looking all thru the house (mobile) he finally found Dad right where the old dog had been sitting for 24 hours. They figured Dad had been dead at least 30 hours. Before this Dad had finally quit chasing women and long divorced from number 5, so he lived alone. He was a retired farmer and he had already set out 50 tomato plants. He loved to raise vegetables most of which he gave away. Some he used fresh and some he froze or canned.
P.S. I was a grown woman and married before I knew that Dock was not his real birth name. Yet anything he ever owned, even on my birth certificate it lists Dock Gillispie as his name.
P.P.S. Dad was told in the early 1940's that he was "sterile"(?) by the family doctor (Dr Sam Frazier). He was married to Lena Maude King Bridges at that time and she could have children, but she and Dad had no children. Edd Pierce was married to Ada I T Gillispie, my father Dock Gillispie's older sister. When Aunt Ada died in Lamesa , Texas my Uncle Edd and Mother married for a short time. One of his sister's strongly objected to the marriage, so it ended in divorce. Another reason the marriage did not last was because my Mother refused to move to the Key community and live in the old shack that my Aunt had to live in all her married life. Beatrice Hailey never married the father of her first born child, a son named Kenneth Wayne Hailey. When she married Rufus S. Aten, she let Kenneth use the name Aten even tho Rufus never adopted him. When Kenneth turned 65 he had an awful time getting Social Security.
In December 2004 I discovered at the Dawson County Courthouse a birth certificate for Kenneth Wayne Wilson, son of Claude Wilson and Beatrice Hailey. All of our family had always known that Claude Wilson was the father of Kenneth, but we also knew that Beatrice and Claude Wilson were not married. He was already married. Beatrice was my Aunt and Kenneth was my 1st cousin. I had loved them all my life and continue to love them even though they are both dead. He died June 28, 2001 in Texarkana , Texas . He had lived in Jefferson , Tx since 1983, coming from Grand Prairie , TX . He was a veteran and a member of the Methodist Church .

I am a 1st cousin and I did not receive word of Dorman's death until 20 December 2001 my 73rd Birthday. It was a shock finding out he had been dead for 6 months and embarrassing to have sent him a Christmas card. I'm sure Barbara was a bit sad to receive the card. I was born Evelyn Louise Gillispie, but at a very young age I came to hate the name Evelyn for myself. It is a very pretty name and was part of a name of my great Aunt Virgie's ( that my mother was named for) daughter Doris that died. But I still dislike it as part of my name. When my husband Ralph died, I started using Louise Gillispie Stratton. As a young, know it all teenager, I quit school in the 10th grade after having gone to11 different schools. My mother and 1st step father, Leonard Corley moved a lot, I married 1st Ernest S. Hogg and 2nd Alvin James Holland with whom I suffered 1 miscarriage and had a 7 1/2 mos. preemie that lived 15 minutes and died. Since he was badly deformed and I was not allowed to see him, it was a blessing. I married third and final time in Sept. 1949, Ralph Merritt Stratton. With Ralph I had 3 miscarriages, and 2 children that lived, Greg and Gail. Our son Greg died June 7, 1963 in San Mateo , CA. Ralph died in Denver , CO April 8, 1987 and is buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery , San Bruno , CA . Our 10 year son, Gregory Kim Stratton is also buried there and I will be buried there with them when I die. At this writing August 5, 1999 I live in Peoria , AZ. lgs August 2001
On January 14, 2000 I left Arizona and moved back to where I was born--Lamesa , Texas . I had left Lamesa in 1949 and have lived in Wichita , KS ; South San Francisco , CA ; San Mateo , CA; Lakewood , CO and Peoria , AZ. and now back in Texas . lgs With Ralph having worked for the Dept. of Interior, National Park Service branch we lived in several National Parks for short periods of time. Grand Teton at Jackson Hole, WY; Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park--south unit at Medora, ND and north unit at Watford City, ND; Bryce Canyon National Park at Panguich, UT; Yosemite National Park at El Portal, CA. Then Ralph was made supervisor of all utilities west of the Mississippi River . Then when our office was moved to Denver in Dec. 1971 Ralph was put in charge of all utilities for the whole USA and held that position until he retired. This above was added by lgs in 2002.
On Dec.14, 2006 I moved back to Arizona and as of Dec 26th I moved into a house in Sun City , AZ that I am only renting. lgs As of Sept 20, 2007 the landlords told me I had to move again as they were going to list the house for sale. Two major moves in one year at the lovely age of 78 and 79. I went out looking at Condo's to buy. No one can tell me I have to move again. Boy, have I ever had to down size with my belongings. Ralph was in WWII in the infantry. He was wounded in Belguim at the Battle of the Bulge on December 20, 1944 , on my birthday, but we did not know each other then. He came back from the war and went to college on the G I bill. The college was the U of Arkansas at Fayetteville . He graduated in 2 1/2 years as a Civil Engineer. He worked for a doodle-bug company in west Texas for about a year. We met,we married and moved to Wichita , KS . We spent about 6 years there with Ralph working for the City of Wichita , paving dept. Two children were born, Greg and Gail. When Gail was almost 5 months old, we moved to San Mateo, CA. Ralph worked in San Francisco for The Dept. of Interior, National Park Service division. In December 1971 the office, with about 300 employees moved to Denver , CO . Ralph worked for N P S for 24 1/2 years before being offered an early out and since he only had 6 months to go, he retired on December 15, 1979 . He enjoyed every day and minute of his job with the Federal Govt. He was Supervisor in charge of all utilities for the whole USA whenhe retired. So when you visit a National Park, Ralph Stratton probably was there ahead of you and improved or built something. He is the only NPS employee to be carried out of the bottom of Grand Canyon , twice , with kidney stone attacks, in a helicopter. He was taken out a 3rd time when a 50 year flood washed out 7 years of work in the bottom of the canyon. A trail gave way and he fell 14 feet, landed on a huge boulder and had one land on his left arm, collapsed left lung and broken left arm. For awhile family and office dreaded to hear that he had to go to Grand Canyon . Ralph was born in Missouri , but when he was 2, his family moved to Garden City, KS. He completed high school and joined the National Guard. Just a few days before he was to get out Pearl Harbor was bombed and he was automatically in the Army. Ralph was married 1st to Dorothy Ann Ahearn of Little Rock , AR. Two children were born, James Ralph and Mary Josephine. Ralph and Dot were divorced and she immediately married her childhood sweetheart, Lawrence Hager. Ralph paid child support, but had no contact with the children, altho the court said he could have them for the entire summer, Dot did not want this and Ralph did not push for his rights, because he was in college. Greg was a 7 months Preemie and struggled very hard to live the first 2 years. The doctors said with time and surgery for a couple of things, he would be ok. He had his surgeries and the last 2 years of his life ,he did not even have a head cold. Then suddenly in the middle of the night on June 4th, he took ill and by noon on June 7th he was dead. He died of something he had since birth and it was not possible in 1963 to do surgery on , or so we were told. We had not ever been told that Greg had this problem. An intestine was wrapped around the center of his stomach and a muscular growth formed on the intestine and squeezed the stomach closed. This gave flu like symptoms. His death certificate says he died of pneumonia. Coroners report says other wise. Greg was always a very happy child. His doctors were always amazed at how fast he recovered from an illness. He and his sister, Gail, got along great. They never fought or argued like siblings today. They played well together and looked out for each other. On July 10, 1935 a baby boy was born in Abilene, Texas and was named Peter Daniels. On July 17, 1935 Dock and Lucille Gillispie drove to Abilene and picked this baby boy up at an orphanage from a Brother Nicholas and returned to Lamesa , TX with him. The baby was renamed Thomas James Gillispie, supposedly after his two new grandfathers. Grandfather Gillispie fudged about his middle name. It was not James at all. The new member of the family was called T. J. The adoption was not final for 6 months, but his sister Louise took to him right off, like a duck takes to water. Dock and Lucille were divorced when T. J. was 3 years old. Lucille remarried before T. J. started to school. He had a slight stutter and when big sister Louise left him at his class room door on his first day of school, he told his teacher that his name was T. J. Corley and his father's name was Leonard Corley, his new step-father's name. He went all through school with the name Corley and even owned a small gas station in Wichita , KS under that name. The day came when he had to register for the draft. So off to the courthouse and a judge to have his name legally changed from Gillispie to Corley. This was in 1953. Lucille had long since divorced Leonard Corley or else he could have adopted T. J. for $25 and saved T. J. $225.00. Such is life, as they say! T. J. married 1st Betty Ann Born on November 8, 1953 in Wichita , KS . They were married for 8 years and had no children. They got divorced. December 2004 I was at the Dawson County Courthouse in Lamesa , Texas and discovered that there was a birth certificate on file for Kenneth Wayne Wilson, son of Claude Wilson and Beatrice Hailey. I and other family had always known that Claude Wilson was Kenneth's father. We had also known that Beatrice was never married to Claude Wilson because he was already married. This is something that happens in many families. It is not frowned on today like it was years ago. You can not blame a child or love them any less because of what their parents did.
