CHEROKEE COUNTY

Cherokee County, Texas

Every family researcher has one, a brick wall. A brick wall is the term we use for an ancestor who seems to have come from nowhere. No matter how hard we try we can’t move our research forward  to find out more information. If you have a brick wall from Cherokee County email the information and we will post it. Good luck!!!!!!

FIELDS

BENGE

MY SEARCH FOR TWO OF MY ANCESTORS HAS REPEATEDLY  HIT THE “BRICK WALL.”  I’M HOPING YOU CAN HELP ME OUT.

THE FIRST IS CHIEF RICHARD FIELDS, JR. 1771-1827.  HE WAS EXECUTED BY HIS OWN PEOPLE-THE CHEROKEES- IN ORDER TO APPEASE THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT.

THIS SUPPOSEDLY OCCURRED IN RUSK OR CHEROKEE COUNTY, TEXAS.

THE SECOND IS SARAH (NEE FIELDS) BENGE 1785-1871.  THE BENGE CEMETERY IN CHEROKEE COUNTY WAS STARTED BY HER SON GEORGE CLINTON BENGE.

I HAD ASSUMED SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN BURIED THERE.  BUT I FIND NO RECORD OF IT.

SCARBOROUGH

BOLTON

My husband’s great grandfather, Thomas Scarborough, and his great grandmother, Amanda Elizabeth “Bettie” Bolton, had their firstborn child die in 1900 at age 3 months.

In the 1910 Census, Thomas owned a sawmill at the age of 24 near the long-forgotten community of Lone Star Village in Precinct 6.

His 27-yr-old sister lives with them, and I wonder about possible disabilities here because she stays with them until she passes in 1931 in Carizzo Springs, Texas.

EDWARDS
DONOHO

My g.g.grandmother was Elizabeth EDWARDS, a daughter of James EDWARDS.   She was born in ca. 1833. I have proof that they were in Texas in 1836 and as James Edwards participated in the Texas Revolution; also that his land grant was in 1838.    Elizabeth  married Isaac DONOHO, a neighbor in 1848.  II have the marriage records, but I cannot find her with this family on a census.  In the 1850 census, already married,  she is listed as Elizabeth DONOHO.  The DONOHOS lived next to the EDWARDS family, but what I need in proof that Elizabeth Edwards DONOHO belonged in this family.  I could not find this information in courthouse records on a recent visit as the clerk claimed that the book containing wills during the 1850's was missing.  This was a disappointing trip.  Does someone know if there are family Bible records or it a reference is found of her in EDWARDS property distribution? I am almost 88 years old and live between Houston and Austin.  I can no longer travel alone and getting back to Cherokee County will be hard for me.  I would appreciate it if I can find the record I need to tie Elizabeth DONOHO to her place in the EDWARDS family.

PAYNE
TEMPLETON
McEACHERN

I am looking for information on Jane McEacharn PAYNE and her forebears, wife of David Greene TEMPLETON. She was born 8 March 1826 in AL. I have her death as 26 Mar 1890 in Jacksonville but I'm not sure that is correct. No death records have been found under this date. Last census record is 1880.She married D.G. TEMPLETON in 1859 when she was 32. I'm not sure if she was married to a PAYNE before and her maiden name is MCEACHARN, or if McEacharn is a middle name. As far as I know, she did not remarry after Templeton died.   Thanks in advance for your help!

PERKINS

Looking for information related to my relative, MOSES PERKINS (born abt. 1794 in SC) and second wife, DEANNAH POTTS PERKINS (born abt 1832 in GA) married in 1849 in Cherokee Co., GA.  Moved to Cherokee Co., TX between 1852-1855 and appear in Cherokee Co., TX census in 1860 and 1870.  They would have had at least 5 children while in Cherokee Co., TX. (Rusk P.O. area). Believe they moved to Johnson Co., TX between 1870 and 1877, based on children's marriages. Moses and two daughters appear in 1880 Census in Johnson Co., TX.  Are there any cemetery records for Cherokee Co., TX? Only son to young for Civil War--any other records, Salt Lists, Church Records, local jury lists, etc. that might show this family?  This family was very prominent in Cherokee Co., GA. and left a well documented paper trail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
