MAYFIELD-SMITH CEMETERY
Mayfield aka Smith Cemetery at Blackjack
The Mayfield aka Smith Cemetery at Blackjack is located 5 miles north of New Summerfield on Hwy 110, then East on CR 4713, then South on CR 4713A. There is no sign identifying the cemetery. The earliest graves are Samuel Smith b. 08/12/1800, d. 4/30/1870 and Oney Smith b. 12/25/1807, d. 7/12/1873.
The cemetery was once known as Smith Cemetery at Blackjack. Helen Wooddell Crawford and Ogreta W. Huttash made a list of the graves that were published in Mrs. Crawford’s book “Cemeteries of Northeast Cherokee County, Texas”. At some later time the Cemetery was listed on the Find a Grave internet site (https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=2131003&CScntry=4&CSst=46&CScnty=2556&CSsr=81&) as Mayfield Cemetery.
I visited the cemetery on Sunday, June 4, 2017. Starting at the gate in the northwest corner, I listed Row 1 from north to south Grave Numbers 1 through 10. Then I moved to the north of Row 2 from graves 1 through 11 and then likewise listed rows 3 through 6. I could not identify the names of the persons buried in Row 2 numbers 10 and 11, nor Row 3 numbers 3, 6 and 7. I listed the names not previously listed from Mrs. Crawford’s book and from the Find a Grave site at the end of the list. Perhaps in the future, I can place these names in the proper row. Gordon Bennett, June 5, 2017
